to talk about general truths.

We use the first conditional
to talk about possible things
in the future.

good cruise holiday.
Both parts of the conditional
sentence here are talking
about the future.
Although we dont use future
tense in the part with if
You may use other
modals instead of
will.

If it is true, I may let
you go.
We use the second conditional
for events and situations which
are unlikely, imaginary or
impossible.
! What would you do if you were the president of Turkey?
! If I flew over the buildings, everybody would be jealous of me.
! If I were in your shoes, I would change my mind.
! So many things would change if we had 48 hours in a day.
We often use if + were
instead of if + was with
the pronouns she, he, it
and I
If your father were here,
he would be angry.
If it were a lie, I wouldnt
be surprised.
Unless = If not
! We use Unless to mean if.. not in the zero and first conditional.
You cant use it before a past tense.
! Unless you struggle to succeed, you cannot reach your goal.
Or
! If you dont struggle to succeed, you cannot reach your goal.
! Unless it is sunny and warm, Ashley doesnt allow her daughter
to go out.

! I regret not telling him the truth. If I had told him the truth, he

I wish / If only
! We use these to talk about past regrets.
! I wish / If only I hadnt met you. (But I met with you.)
! I wish / If only I had studied more. (But I didnt study.)
! We use these to talk about events or situations which we would
like to be true now.
! I wish I had more money. ( I dont have more money now.)
! I wish you were here. ( You arent here now)
