Namaskar Volunteers,
The first edition of our Newsletter
was very well received. Now we
bring to you the second edition on
the backdrop of exciting changes
such as a new office and expanding
volunteer activities. We hope this
Diwali brings the glow of a zillion
lamps to our initiatives at AAP and
melts the darkness away from the
Indian Political Arena.
Happy Diwali!

Ongoing Activities
AAP believes in an equitable society providing equal opportunity for all. A good education system accessible
to all citizens is a must for realizing this goal. Towards this, AAP volunteers are taking initiatives to enhance
the working of PMC schools, one school at a time, and carry out deeper education research. Two
spontaneous areas of action have emerged: one by the Kothrud-Karveganar team and the other by AAP
volunteers who are already in the education field.
Kothrud-Karvenagar Team
AAP volunteers in Kothrud-Karve nagar visited two PMC schools which fall under their Kshetriya
Karyalay (Ward Office) to do a reality check. They looked for things like general cleanliness in the school
campus, the state of toilets, availability and quality of free meals, adequacy of teachers etc. They also wished
to know whether there was any issue the school would like to take up with the PMC. They spoke to the
children, the teachers and also to the principal.
K. Shamrao Sripati Barate Prathmik Vidyalay Digambarwadi, Warje Malwadi
In this school, to their surprise, more or less things were in order. The only issue this school was facing is that
they were 3 teachers short. They have already sent an application for this and expected the teachers to join
shortly. Some classes did not have benches but there were mats for children to sit on.
PMC School No. 116B / 196 - Banabai Balona Barate School - Ramnagar, Warje Malwadi
Here the head master was very welcoming. He immediately took the team into the staff room and asked all
the teachers what issues they were facing. They listed following issues:
1. Top priority: The children's toilet had no water supply. It has an overhead tank but as construction
work is going on (a third floor is being added to the building) some construction material had fallen.
2. Second priority: They had a computer lab and had got 30 new computers for it. But there were just
6-8 tables which already had some old computers.
3. As mentioned, a third floor was being added but it did not have a toilet. So if any student wanted to
go to the toilet they had to climb down 3 floors and then walk around the building. So they wanted a
toilet built on the third floor.
4. There were two tanks in which drinking water was stored. They wanted a third one as on some
occasions they ran out of drinking water.
5. This school is surrounded by bastis and as the walls weren't high enough they faced security issues.
They wanted the walls raised.
As Arvindji has said, most of the problems people face are easy to solve. e.g. their most pressing issue of
replacing the toilet tank can be done in less than Rs 10,000! Their second issue of not enough furniture in
computer lab will also not take too much to solve.
Follow Up
After visiting this school the team went to the Ward office and met the Asst Commissioner Mr Umesh Mali.
Luckily at that time the civil work in-charge was also there. Hence the team could actually get the toilet water
issue resolved. For the computer lab furniture they raised the issue with Assistant Commissioner, Mr Umesh
Mali, whose ward office this school falls under in the Mohalla COmmittee meeting. He informed that this work
was not under his jurisdication but under the education department. The team is following up with this
department now. Good thing is that the Asst Commissioner and other staff at the Ward office are very co-
operative, though it requires a lot of follow-up to get something done.

Research Initiative
Meanwhile, AAP Volunteers Pavan Iyengar (Visting Faculty, IBB, Savitribai Phule University) and Vaijayanti
Aphale (BEd) are already in the education field and also teach at a PMC school. They are using their experience
to add to the education research effort at AAP, to improve learning levels in public schools, as also to
formulate an education vision for AAP Pune. The focus is on and how best to implement Right to Education
(RTE) Act in public schools and otherwise, in law and in spirit, to:
1. Improve students learning levels
2. Use of toys, other innovative strategies to enhance learning
3. Formulate Evaluation strategies. RTE has replaced traditional exams with Continuous Comprehensive
Assessment. Thus, assessment is to be used not to judge students and give marks but to give them
feedback and adjust learning strategy so as to reduce gaps in their learning.
A research document on RTE has already been prepared. Also, an RTE checklist has been prepared for PMC
schools. The infrastructure and other provisions at each school can be evaluated against this list and steps
taken to address the gap one by one.
If any of you are interested in any of the following:
1. Helping with education research through internet, filing RTI, visiting schools, conducting surveys,
volunteering for teaching etc.
2. Visiting PMC schools, understanding their problems and helping them overcome the same by
representing their case in respective mohalla committees or relevant authorities

Help us learn the right way
we are this nations future
The AAP Real Estate Research Team has now made the full transition to action mode to help people
fight real estate corruption and get conveyance deed in particular. The team realized that most flat owners,
even post graduates, were so ignorant of conveyance deed. Presently, they are in touch with 22 flat owners to
cover about 15 apartments and societies. This should help 3000 flat owners to get their Conveyance Deed and
hopefully create many sympathizers for AAP.

This is truly a team effort of seven to eight very dedicated volunteers, each playing their part with utmost
deligence. Rajesh Chaudhari takes the lead in meeting society people, training the volunteers. He has
contacted various Societies, Flat Owners, AAP Prabhags Volunteers to give more information about Housing
and Conveyance Deed. Deepak and Srivatsa take care of the co-ordination. Arun answers emails. Queries,
looks into research and training materials. Captain Narayan helped in creating Social Media Ads. Doctor
Abhijit helped in creating Marathi versions. Divyang Baldota helped with Social Media. AAPians Aditya Mane, Ajay
Munot, Pavan Iyengar and Sushil Kumar and Vaijayanti Aphale have also given their valuable inputs.
The team is using social media to a great extent to attract attention. They are now building a platform where
flat owners and effected people can meet, discuss solutions. Every mode of interaction, from physical
meetings and conferences to emails groups is being explored.

Forms have been prepared for different aspects of real estate counsel as follows, which are being distributed
through various media.
For guidance in Housing Society or Conveyance Deed: http://goo.gl/FSXxUa
For checklists, forms, steps on how to form a Housing Society: http://goo.gl/5qIRDq
URL of the Groups Page: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/housingsocietypune

The next step would be to pressurize the government to:
Pass a law that grants conveyance automatically.
Punishes Builders for not providing what was promised in the brochures. The Government has created
laws but not actually put any builder behind bars for fraud.
Eventually, they plan to use the research and experience to make a policy draft and execution plan on how to
build good, clean and affordable cities in India.

Born in a fauji family, I spent my childhood in an army environment. Graduate Electrical Engineer form NIT (Then REC),
Warangal. Army was a natural choice as a career.

I am out of the army for almost three decades now, but the army is not out of me. Presently, Im self employed as a Small
Scale entrepreneur, engaged in development and printing of technical literature.

Why AAP?
After the Anna movement yielded no tangible results, I believe, it was the best thing when Arvind Kejriwal told Anna, We
have to enter this `Keechad` to clean it and thus AAP was formed. The fire within me was lit.

As an individual, I am a workaholic, engaged for nearly 14 hours a day. Prior to AAP, often, I spent 10 to 12 hours a day
across my PC, leading a mundane life. However, once AAP was formed, I started keeping a track of happenings and
supporting AAP online. I began to grow restless when the 10th to 26th January 2014 membership drive was launched -
there was no palpable AAP presence in our PCMC area.

From Neutral gear to 1st gear
One day Mohini Kulkarni, my lieutenant at office arrived late. She apologised and gave me an AAP membership form to fill
up. I asked her, where did you get this form from and how many do you have? She told me that AAP membership drive
was launched at Alandi. She had signed up at Alandi, took one extra form to make 50 Xerox copies. I realised that
repeated spending of own money for Xerox would not last. I immediately arranged to print a few thousand copies of
Membership form and told her to go back to Alandi along with a sizable
number of forms for Alandi as well as Rajgurunagar (Khed). There was an
urgent need for a Mahila to be present there to be able to freely communicate
with prospective members. I told Mohini to go back and help the drive and
not to come back to office until the drive was complete.

But then, what about the fire in my belly? I went to Alandi and spent a few
hours with the Alandi team of four volunteers. I struck a bargain with the
team. I would print a lot of hand-outs/brochures for Alandi/Khed and in turn
they would help me conduct a membership drive at Indrayani Nagar
(Bhosari) for one day.

From 1st gear to 2nd gear
With the help of 4 volunteers from Alandi, we organised a membership drive
at Indrayani nagar (Bhosari). Score = 230 in 8 hours. While we were busy
interacting with prospective members, I was approached by a youngster. He
asked me Sir, who are you and which Aam Aadmi Party are you running. I
told him there is only one. He then told me that there is an official AAP office
In the Spotlight

at Bhosari. I then got connected to AAP Bhosari. The gear got stuck. We were moving one step forward and then two
steps backward.

Victory in defeat
Post LS elections, the Bhosari team got badly depleted.
But my conviction re-emerged stronger as I always believe :
Every failure is a step closer to success
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely, and
Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!
To fill the vacuum after depletion of Bhosari team, I decided to do something different. I told myself, go get connected to
those who are doing something. Go and learn. Come back and implement. That is how I am now connected to the AAP
Pune team.

My present involvement in AAP activities : Improvement of facilities at AAP Pune Dist office. Support to Conveyance
Deed Team, PMP Pravasi Mitra Team, PCMC Safai Abhiyan team, Design artwork for AAP, Pune for posting on
Electronic Media

What keeps me so young at heart even at age 67: I think the younger generation connects well with me and vice-versa.
They make me forget my age. I would like to especially compliment Vatsa, Rajesh, Bhanu, Arun Nair, Deepak, Panse ji
and all others who gave me all the support and freedom needed to move things forward.

On the family front
It may not be out of place to say that my wife, Dr. Aruna is a source of inspiration, as she has always encouraged me to
give my best to AAP. She believes that AAP has done a lot of good to me and now perceives me as a better husband
and a better citizen.

I am blessed with Dhiraj, a soldier son - a Kargil decorated veteran whos an engineer and a paratrooper. He dons a Lt
Col uniform. I am a proud father (in-law) of Namita and grandfather of a 7 year old Kaizan (well ahead of his age).

How can I contribute my best to the party?
I think, a support role is best suited for me. Those of us with some knowledge of Military history would know Army
marches on its stomach. When you want to fight a war, The importance of logistics cannot be undermined. However, I
would always do whatever is needed of me. After-all, a commitment is a commitment.

Future ambition
To shake hands with Arvind Kejriwal at least once, nothing more. My inspiration comes from an adaption of the famous
quote by John F Kennedy
ASK NOT WHAT AAP CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR AAP.
and
WAITING FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN? NO! LETS MAKE THEM HAPPEN.

Mermbership drive at Indrayani Nagar (Bhosari) Jan 2014
Event AAPdates

OUT: A rickety staircase leading up to two dark, dusty, rundown rooms for an office at Ashirwad Mangal
karyalay. The rooms not only needed to be vacated at 8.30 pm every day, every time we used the ground floor
(which was very often as the rooms were too small to hold even a District Council Meeting) we had to pay
extra charges.
IN: a really spacious 2000 sq. ft. AAP Pune office occupying the entire 4th floor of Lunkad Villa building on Law
College Road. It has two airy terraces for those who want a breather. Unlike our old office, this one is ours to
use day and night, no conditions apply. The best part: ithe rent is exactly the same!
So who played Alladdins or rather, AAPs genie? Tara Maitreyan. our DC member and a long time AAP
supporter, has made the new office available to us at this hugely discounted rate. Thanks to Tara, finally AAP
has a found a place it can call home.
To inaugurate the office, AAP held a chai session on 2
nd
October which turned into a delicious chai and bhel
session thanks to Panseji and Nikhil. Meetings, discussions, strategies are already being chalked out at the
office with renewed enthusiasm. We are sure this is more than just a geographical move and harbours a new
beginning for AAP Pune.

One year since the murder of rationalist activist Narendra Dabholkar and still the Pune police has no clue. To
make matters worse, in a sting operation it was revealed that the police tried a sance (planchette) to find the
perpetrators of murdering the very man who spent his life educating people against such practices. To protest
against the police inaction and superstition, an andolan was held on the first death anniversary of Narendra
Dabholkar in which AAP participated along with Andha Shraddh Nirmulan Samiti and other like minded NGOs
and Citizens Groups. The event began with a protest rally that started from the chowk near Omkareshwar
Mandir and ended at Manohar Mangal Karyalay. Celebrities like Amol Palekar, Nasiruddin Shah, Sonali
Kulkarni were present. Ashish Khetan, a well known journalist and our LS candidate from Delhi. represented
AAP. He was the one who had carried out the sting operation.
Protest March Against Dabholkars Murder Investigations
At the Karyalay there was a speech session where people from all walks of life who were closely associated
with Dabholkar vent their hearts out. The gist was that spirited people such as Dabholkar can be killed but
their message would never die. Ashish Khetan too addressed the crowds. He also did a press conference which
was very well attended as he is well known for his investigative journalism and daring Sting Ops. A Ringan
Natya performed by the cultural troops of various ANS units followed. It was received with great enthusiasm
by the gathering.

On that evening, Ashish Khetan held an inspiring session with our volunteers at the AAP Pune office. His advice
was to concentrate on any one people oriented project, complete it and showcase it to people for maximum
impact. Volunteers wanted to know about his work etc. which he deftly spoke about.
Someone said : A picture is worth a thousand words, a play (, )is worth a thousand books. AAP
decided to draw on the power of performance through songs/plays/street plays to inspire the masses and
take our message across. A cultural wing was inaugurated. An appeal was made to all committed,
disciplined volunteers who have basic aptitude for singing, acting, playing any musical instrument to be part
of this wing. The introductory meeting was held on 24
th
August. Deepak, Ashutosh, Suhas, Abhinav, Srivatsa
were some of the old timers present.
This was followed by a workshop conducted by Musician Mr. Raju Inamdar on 31st August. It was decided to
set up a Geet Manch to begin with. At the beginning of the workshop a few volunteers were a bit skeptical
and even shy considering their lack of experience in music and other related arts. But Raju Inamdar, who
held the training session really put everyone at ease with his overall persona and his teaching skills. Raju
Inamdar has worked of effective communication techniques for different NGOs for a long time. He is the
gentleman who wrote all the songs as well as directed all the plays that were shown on the Narendra
Dabholkar 1 year death anniversary. So it was really a big privilege for all of us to have him there. There
were a lot of new volunteers who joined in and most of them were young. Wareji also sang quite well and
what really worked was the sentiment and the ideas of the progressive songs that we were singing. It wasnt
purely for art and entertainment but the essense of the songs really resonated with all of us, who are with
AAP for exactly the ideas that the songs propogate. The need to effectively use art and music to convey
progressive ideas to the masses is something that we all unanimously agreed upon.

For those who wish to say it with a song, dance or drama Please send your name and phone no at this email id
: aamaadmiparty.pune@gmail.com with subject : Cultural Wing.

AAP has been more like a tree with spontaneous growth fueled by volunteer enthusiasm rather than a
structured organization. To bring a method to the madness, Mission Vistaar has been launched across India.
Prithvi Reddy , Convener of AAP Karnataka who is also appointed as the Convenor of National Mission Vistaar
team and Atishi Marlena, AAP spokesperson, came down to hold the first session of the Pune District chapter.
Meetings were held with the Pune DC, all the LS Candidates from Pune District and their campaign
committees. Both Prithvi and Atishi also held private meeting with volunteers who had grievances. These were
followed by a general gathering of all volunteers from all the 4 LS Constituencies ie Pune Maval Shirur and
Baramati. The Mission was explained in great detail and Prithvi and Atishi patiently fielded questions from
karyakartas. The main refrain of the volunteers was that while getting the organization on track was
important, AAP Pune needed to implement some on-going activities meanwhile, to keep volunteers engaged.
In her concluding address, Abha did mention some of the activities we are doing here. (If any of you missed
that and are keen to contribute, please call up the office and join any of the on-going activities mentioned in
this newsletter. Your participation is most welcome.)
On the whole, the Delhi team appeared pleased with Pune AAP as there was absolute coordinaton between
the LS candidates and the DC barring a few exceptions of course. The scenario is not so cohesive elsewhere.
Both Wareji and Marutiji are much loved by the volunteers and almost all the karykartas campaigned whole
heartedly for these two.The visiting team really seemed hopeful that Mission Vistaar would succeed in Pune
District thanks mainly to you dedicated volunteers.
This was a preliminary meeting to be followed by another. Very soon an interim DC will be announced which
will be in charge of Mission Vistaar and will be in place for a year. It is expected to form committees at the
level of polling centers so that all the committees till the State level are elected. The present committees will
continue to work till the interim committee is announced by the Mission Vistaar team.

A good Health Care is fundamental need of people, but can majority of Indians afford it ? Do governments
health care schemes really reach ground to citizens ? Like all other areas, health care is equally or more
affected by corruption & bad governance, be it in hospitals, medicine companies or healthcare policies by
Govt. Its important for Political Activists to understand these issues.

AAP Pune had organised an exciting talk by Doctor Abhay Shukla on how swaraj can be implemented in health
on Sunday 21 September at the AAP Pune Office. Dr. Abhay Shukla has successfully demonstrated that health
careprograms can be initiated as a citizen-based, low-cost and locally sustainable activity by drawing upon the
resources of existing community-
based organizations. By initiating
health campaigns on a mass basis in
Indian rural and tribal areas, he has
laid the foundation for a large-scale
democratically directed health
movement.
He gave us interesting insights such as:
many of the hospitals in Pune are
formed as Trusts which are by law
required to keep 20% of their beds
available to the poor. However, very
few hospitals actually do that. At the
end of his enlightening talk Dr. Shukla
cited the AAP manifesto which has many of the facets of Universal health care.
As usual, we AAP volunteers had a lot to ask and interact on with Dr.Shukla who patiently heard all and
answered to satisfaction with his deep background and expertise.
A big thank you to AAP ka Dr. Abhijeet More for connecting us to Dr.Shukla's work and arranging the talk. For
exploring further possibilities in your areas and mohalla's please contact Abhijit More

Like many of us, party volunteers at Hadapsar who had geared up for ensuing assembly elections were rather
dejected at AAPs decision to not contest them. In the Hadapsar volunteer meeting they were discussing on
how they needed to work towards giving Hadapsar an honest, effective leader. Suddenly Ashutosh said that
indeed they would do that, by helping the electorate make an informed decision. They would hold an open
interactive session amongst the electoral candidates and the general public where the candidates would
answer questions posed by the public. He explained that since the political partnerships had broken down, all
candidates were vulnerable and would show up even for an AAP event. The team was impressed and
immediately galvanized into action.
Amar shinde and Ashutosh shot a short film on the problems faced by Hadapsar. Sushas Shinde and Girish
Sukal personally went to each candidates home to invite them for the session. Munesh Raut , Vicar, Navin and
other volunteers went around spreading the word of the session amongst the general electorate and
requested their presence.
The presence of eight candidates including Chetan
Tupe of NCP, Mahadeo Babar of Shivsena and Nana
Bhangire of MNS and a final turnout of 150 people
including 50 AAP members lent credence to the
programme. The programme began with screening
of the film made by the volunteers followed by the
Q& A session. The questions covered topics that
were wide ranging.... from garbage problem to
providing employment opportunities for the youth.
And almost every member of the fairly large
gathering got a chance to ask his or her question.
Mahesh Nalawde and Chetan Tupe were the most
convincing of the lot.
All in all it was a very well thought out and executed initiative by Hadapsar team and perhaps the only real
effort to put in practice AAPs stand of helping the electorate make an informed decision in the Assembly
Elections.

On Saturday, 18th October, AAP leader Mr Suresh Khopade made a presentation to volunteers at the new AAP
office on Law College Rd. The topic was Formation of Mohalla Committees. The event was well attended by
40-45 volunteers. Mr. Khopade talked
about his experiences in Bhiwandi, a
suburb outside of Mumbai which had a
history of communal riots, where he had
successfully worked in creating Mohallas
committees with the end to prevent
violence. He felt that much of the
violence was because of perceptions two
communities have of each other, often
wrong. By creating a Mohalla committee
of ordinary people and eminent citizens
to work together with the police and with
government staff much of the violence
could be avoided. He ended by giving the
volunteers present a plan to work on in
different wards in Pune. AAP plans many
such events in coming months to follow
up on the creation of such mohallas.

Vinesh Deshmukh from Dhanakawadi got three speed beakers erected at a spot which was really proving
dangerous for kids and the aged. The work was made possible through Dhanakawadi mohalla committee.
Congratulations Vinesh for your spontaneous initiative and more power to the mohalla committee.

AAPian Nikhil Sheth has created an interactive map where one can easily find out which electoral ward in Pune
a location comes under, see the ward boundaries,
and more.
In addition to the online interactive map, at the
website you can download high-detail, street-level
maps of every ward in Pune, print them on A1 size
paper and use for any kind of mapping exercise.
Great stuff for citizens groups, NGOs, educators.
Nikhil Sheth has appealed to all to visit the website
on http://nikhilsheth.weebly.com/mapping.html and
give your valuable feedback, suggestions for more
etc. Very useful work indeed Nikhil.

The first issue of AAP Pune Newsletter AAP ki Awaaz was very well received by all of you. Perhaps the
most apt acknowledgement, however, came from the Cantonment team. In one of their meetings they
actually discussed about the relevance of the newsletter and how they needed to ensure that all their
event updates as well as volunteer suggestions are communicated to the newsletter team. If only all teams
took this initiative in their respective wards the newsletter will become a much more meaningful exercise.
The Dare: Travelling by Bus for a meeting at the other end of town!

The bravehearts: An obsessive compulsive cyclist (pavan) joined by another mother of 2 volunteer (vaiju) who
got convinced to take the challenge!

Outcome : Saved personal money, avoided breathing more pollution or being responsible for more pollution ,
contributed to a better Pune, avoided the stress of driving through evening traffic jams, had a great discussion
while travelling to the meeting destination, had a nice brisk walk from the bus stop to meeting place (AAP
Pune Cantonment Office for the education team meet). Only downside went 10 minutes late :( but wouldve
wasted time in car parking anyways. To top it all - helped improve the PMPML bus service by lodging
complaints such as: route boards not being there on many buses as well as the PMPML helpline bus not being
visible in our particular bus on the official PMPNL helpline no. End result: Two AAP volunteers who felt very
satisfied at having done their bit for the city.

How about you doing your bit by getting off from behind your car steering or two wheeler seat, getting on a
PMPML bus, and
Note down the problems
in your PMPML bus travel such as
1. Route boards absent or not clearly visible
2. Seats torn, handles missing
3. Buses not travelling on schedule
4. PMPML Helpline No. absent etc.
Register Your Complaints on the
PMPML Helpline number (020 24503355).
You will help our PMPMNL Bus Service change from
