Lamb Family Celebrates Heritage At Gathering
By TARA ENGEL
Each year they gather. The
new additions are welcomed.
The losses in the older gener
ations are noted and
mourned. Individual family
stories are related and meld
ed into one flowing tapestry
of lineal history.
The yearly Lamb family
gathering, held at the Pente
costal Camp Ground on Cen
ter Road, is more than a fami
ly reunion - it is a
celebration of life.
"It's Just something that
everyone in the family looks
forward to. It's really a day of
fellowship and lots of love -
mixed with food galore and a
bunch of reminiscing," says
Lucille Henry, one of the or
ganizers of this year's gather
ing, held on July 26.
Mrs. Henry noted that the
yearly reunion draws in the
descendants of two brothers
- the Revs. J.P. and Mike
Lamb, who moved their fami
lies to the Corwin-Way-
nesville area in the 1920s. It
was in Corwin that the two
brothers founded the Free
Penetcost Holiness Church
in 1927.
This year, the 1.133 direct
descendants of the Lamb
brothers received special
recognition, as state and lo
cal elected officials took note
of their 18th annual heritage
celebration.
"We were sent a flag and
several congratulatory notes.
And Corwin Nixon wrote us a
lovely letter, as did Bob
McEwen," Mrs. Henry said,
adding that her family has al
ways shown an interest in
political activities on both a
local and national level. "My
father, Acey Lamb was invit
ed to meet Dan Quayle in
Wilmington recently - and
years ago my grandfather.
Rev. J.P. Lamb, was selected
to sit with Eisenhower on the
platform during one of the
president's whistle stop
tours."
These and many other rec
ollections are passed from
generation to generation at
the yearly gatherings.
Mrs. Henry noted that fa
miliar local names such as
former Waynesville mayor
Ora Jones. Corwin Mayor Bill
Purkey, Walter Lamb. Ray
Lamb, John Sackett and
Doug Garrett are all direct
Lamb kin.
"We give out awards each
year to family members who
have traveled the farthest;
who are the oldest; the
youngest, the longest mar
ried, etc.," Mrs. Henry said.
"This year Arnold and Bertha
Turner of Waynesville earned
honors as the longest mar
ried - 70 years. Paul Ruther
ford Riddell of Lebanon was
celebrated as the youngest -
and Raymond Lamb of Day
ton was the oldest at 85."
Once the honors are hand
ed out at the Lamb family
gathering, the participants
settle down to the important
stuff - getting to know each
other again. Many have re
"oV.^'iUt* *t'" V*
mained together in the area
over the years - but that
doesn't mean the old stories
lose their flavor.
"We still chuckle about
the one fellow .who decided,
during the depression, that
social security was the mark
of the beast. He moved his
family and everything he
owned, including livestock,
back to Kentucky. But on the
way there, he hit a trolley car
rail and turned over, scatter
ing belongings and livestock
all over the place. Everyone
was OK, but it took them
awhile to get everything put
back together."
Mostly though, the family
speaks with pride of the two
brothers who followed their
vision to a small town in
southwestern Ohio.
"They really started some
thing special. Today, out of
those 1,133 descendants,
over 30 of them arc minis
ters. We have one Kentucky
Colonel, a whole bunch of
community leaders and, well,
just a lot of really decent
folks," Mrs. Henry said,
adding that her own mother,
Blanche Lamb, had twice
been selected as an outstand
ing mother in the area. "I
think my grandfather would
be awfully proud of his fami
ly, as would my great uncle
Mike. If all families took the
time to get together and cele
brate each other once a year,
I believe we'd all-be a lot hap
pier."
