The new subsidy scheme is nearly upon us. The build-up has been long and frustrating and sadly there is still a great deal of detail to come. The biggest headache for some is undoubtedly greening, but issues such as active farmer, entitlement trading, young farmer and the national reserve all need consideration. SPECIAL OFFER We are running a one to one assessment of all the important issues. This involves a fixed, discounted cost of PS100 plus mileage for holdings up to 100ha

New office We will soon be moving the office to Green Farm, Queenhill, near Upton-upon- Severn. There will be more room and better surroundings, with plenty of space to hold meetings. Agricultural Appeals Panel Charles has recently been appointed to the Independent Agricultural Appeals Pan- el. This is a national body that reports directly to the Farming Minister and hears appeals against Rural Payments Agency and Natural England decisions. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the workings of the top level of these organisations and to be able to help adjudicate complex disputes. Its still best to try and avoid disputes but at least you should have an expert on hand if the worst happens! C P W Daniell Chartered Surveyors, Land Agents and Rural Property Consultants
Share Farming An increase in the number of share farming, contract farming and joint venture projects are being seen across the UKs agricultural economy. Expansion is often seen by some as the only way to secure a farming future but if this doesnt suit your circumstances, the solution can be to team up with another business to give both parties the benefits of a larger scale operation. The CLA have recently launched a campaign to increase the use of such arrangements, in part to help get young farmers their first foot on the farm- ing ladder.
What are the options? There are endless different agreements that can be put in place ranging from contract farming, joint ventures and profit shares and every situation is unique, so what might suit one business, almost invariably has pitfalls for the next. A variety of issues such as tax, land ownership and tenure, employment, retirement and succession need to be considered to tailor an agreement to the individual circumstances.
What are the benefits? Share farming agreements are a great opportunity. They can give landowners the abil- ity to keep an element of control over the use of their holding and maintain a viable farming business. Whilst at the same time they can offer good start for possible new entrants and or larger businesses looking to expand their operations.
