1here Is A 8euer Way!
The Beer Way for Forest Hills iniave is supported by long"me and new resi-
dents, young parents, community leaders, senior cizens, empty nesters, school dis-
trict administrators and teachers as well as parochial and private school families. We
have been and are staunch supporters of the Forest Hills School District. Our concerns
are not isolated and are supported by facts. We will support a cost"eecve, sustaina-
ble plan that provides equal access to 21
st
century learning for ALL Forest Hills stu-
dents.

1he |an |s Not Susta|nab|e This plan oers 50 |n operanona| sav|ngs, making it un-
sustainable and es the district to maintaining and operang nine buildings for 32.5
years. The .5 mil permanent improvement fund that is part of this plan would gener-
ate $600,000 per year, but the district has spent an average of $800,000 per year the
past decade. More |mportant|y, by the nme the bond exp|res, seven of the n|ne
bu||d|ngs w||| be between 70 and 8S years o|d.

1he |ann|ng rocess |s I|awed The school district leadership has refused to
acknowledge or adhere to widely accepted facilies planning processes used in many
other districts throughout Ohio. Independent architectural rms no"cost oers to
vet this plan were refused, with the district instead choosing to pursue the advice of
just one rm. Other professionals well"versed in modern school design have re-
viewed this plan and determined that there are |nsuc|ent funds to accomp||sh
what |s be|ng prom|sed.

D|str|bunon of Iunds |s Inequ|tab|e " The 2013 Ohio Facilies Construcon Commis-
sion (OFCC) report revealed a|| s|x e|ementary schoo|s have reached the po|nt where
bu||d|ng new, not renovanng, |s recommended. However, under levy plans, only one
school will be re"built, priorizing some neighborhoods and some students over oth-
ers.

kenovate to New W||| Not Work Levy p|ans de||ver on|y fracnons of CICC rec-
ommended renovanons based on minimum standards for the state of Ohio. For ex-
ample, only 10% of recommended electrical work would be addressed at Maddux;
26% of security needs met at Mercer; 43% of handicap access at Summit; 38% securi-
ty at Anderson; 15% windows at Ayer and Sherwood. This is barely renovated, and it
certainly cannot be considered new.

uesnons About A|| Day k|ndergarten " The proposed bond levy has promised the
opportunity to consider the gradual implementaon of all"day kindergarten. While
all"day kindergarten should be a goal for the district, th|s p|an prov|des no deta||s re-
gard|ng how th|s curr|cu|um change w||| be rea||zed, neither in terms of facilies nor
resources.

Iorest n|||s |eaders say th|s p|an |s the best they can do, and its beer to do
something than nothing. While we agree that change is necessary, we dont believe
this poorly planned use of taxpayer dollars is the answer. There are alternave op-
ons for the future with signicant annual cost"savings and long"term vision with
benets for our ENTIRE community.
eer d|str|cts have successfu||y p|anned the|r futures by consolidang resources, u-
lizing OFCC suggesons and creang clear, coherent Master Plans. For Forest Hills to
remain a district of choice, we cant seu|e for |ess.
A NC vote |s not aga|nst the schoo| d|str|ct or our ch||dren; it is a vote that says we
expect more from district leadership. The proposed plan is not transformaonal; in-
stead, it protects and connues an anquated educaonal system and organizaonal
paern rooted in decades past. The Superintendent and the Board of Educaon have
a responsibility to lead the district to assure we are providing the most cost"eecve
and equitable educaon for ALL STUDENTS, but those obligaons wont be met with
this levy.
