WAYNESVILLE-Janette Maloy's Style of
painting is a little like trying to capture sun
light in a Mason Jar. You seal a bit of it in
with the peaches or jelly you preserve, but
you really only catch a hint of its essence.
Mrs. Maloy, 52, who has been painting on
and off for 25 years, recently had one of her
paintings selected for a two-week exhibit
sponsored by the Pastel Society of America
at the National Arts Club in New York City.
In spite of that honor, she continues to
strive toward her ultimate goalto capture
the look of sunlight.
"I^paint the way sunlight affects the
flowers, buildings and people. It moves
quickly and you have to work fast to try to
catch the atmosphere," she said. "It changes
all-year round."
SHE SPENDS four hours, Monday
-through Friday, in her studio above the Love
less Pharmacy in Waynesville.
"I can't spend anymore than that or I get
dull. And I never paint without (the radio)
. . .it gets me in a wonderful mood," she said.
"I'm in there most mornings about nine
months a year. Now that it's nice out, I paint
around my patio. I just noticed in the last six
months that my colors are, bolder and bright
er and a little wild."
Each morning as the sunlight filters
through the trees and classical music is
carried on the breeze, Mrs. Maloy sits down
at the canvas and sorts out her thoughts.
"There's no phone at the studio and no
distractions. I never sit down at the canvas
and don't have anything to paint," she said.
"Every time you sit down to paint, you learn
something new. I have more ideas than I
have time to paint."
ONE PAINTING can take two to six weeks
depending on the size, which varies depend
ing on the subject. When the mood doesn't
hit her, she changes subjects.
"Attitude is everythingyou need en
thusiasm," she said. "If I'm not painting, I'm
thinking about it. I'm putting together com
position and color."
Though she also uses oils and watercolors,
Mrs. Maloy usually uses pastels, the stubby
rainbow colored crayons that bring a subtle
hue to her subjects. Her favorite style of
painting is Impressionistthe often dreamy,
colorful landscape and village scenes that
look like the artist was peering through a
piece of wavy glass.
Her favorite artist is Degas, who is known
for his muted studies of dancers.
"I LIKE him because up until his time,
pastel was used entirely as a drawing medi
um, and he used it as painting," she said. "He
began doing big pastels when he was going
blind."
As a child she drew all the time, but
parents discouraged her from pursuing a
reer in art. So the Atlanta native majorec

Macon. Later she studied with Robert Bra
man of the Art Students League in New Y
City and William Schultz in Lenox, Mass.
In between, she raised three childreri {
moved from Georgia to Florida to Califor
to Ohio. She put her painting aside u;
about a year and a half ago because she '
busy raising her family. But when tl
moved to Waynesville to be near her h
band's job in Dayton, she started hunting
a studio.

One of those sketches ultimately beca

and Sculptors show in June. She said
