Fertilizers

which contain
Nitrogen
Ariyana and Alaa
Fertilizer is a chemical or natural
substance which is added to soil
to increase its fertility.
It works by increasing crop
production by replacing essential
elements used by a previous crop
or by boosting levels of elements.
Specifically, nitrogen fertilizer is
an inorganic fertilizer which has
nitrous compounds added to it.
Nitrogen fertilizer comes in
different forms (liquid and dry)
and there are many types of
fertilizer with different
concentrations of nitrogen.
Justus von Liebig, made the
discovery that nitrogen is a critical
nutrient plants need in the 19
th

century.
In the early 20th century, Fritz
Haber, discovered how to extract
nitrogen from the atmosphere and
convert it into a liquid. Afterwards,
the liquid nitrogen is changed into
nitrogen fertilizer. Fritz Haber later
won the Nobel Prize for his discovery
in 1918.

The discovery and
technological breakthrough
that led to commercial nitrogen
fertilizer has helped to greatly
increase the worlds available
food supply.
The discovery may have
helped to prevent a
widespread food crisis,
because about 2 billion people
around the world depend on
food fertilized with nitrogen.
Nitrogen fertilizers are used because sometimes
soils lacks enough nitrogen (soils sometimes lack
nitrogen because of intensive cropping, frequent
heavy rains, which can cause nitrogen to leach out
of the soil and a low pH- which indicates acidic soil),
which causes the plant to have a nitrogen
deficiency.
Plants with a nitrogen deficiency look generally
pale and yellow-green. The oldest leaves closest to
the base of the plant have the highest lack of
nitrogen and usually die the fastest.
Too much fertilizer can burn plants and damage
leaves by increasing the mineral salt concentration
in the soil.
Fertilizers high in nitrogen reduce flower growth
and increase leaf growth.
Heavy fertilization can produce excessive growth.
Extra nitrogen can seep into the ground and
water and pollute water supplies.
Excessive nitrogen can result in pollution of the air.
Lots of nitrogen can cause plasmolysis to take
place. Plasmolysis is when water passes from the
plants in to the soil, which causes the plant to wilt.
Too much nitrogen can cause health problems like
heart disease, respiratory diseases and maybe
even cancer.
Overuse of fertilizer stresses plants which makes
them more vulnerable to diseases and pests.
If there is too much rainfall, then the fertilizer
might be washed away into the water supply. This
causes the water plants to grow quickly. This
decreases the amount of oxygen in the water,
which causes an increase in the amount of
bacteria as the plants and other creatures die.
Nitrogen is especially toxic to fish because it
damages their gills.
Nitrogen enters the bloodstreams of fish and
invertebrates and prevents them from using
oxygen.
