Paint Finishing Dos & Donts
Removes defects such as deep scratches, dust nibs or
excessive orange peel
Dry sand with Dual Action Sander, foam interface pad
recommended for contours OR wet sand by hand
Caution: Sanding through clear coat will require repainting
Follow with Scratch Refinement Step and/or
Compounding Step
1. Sanding Step 4. Polishing Step
Removes swirls, fine scratches and very mild stains
For Dark Colors use finer polish and finer foam pads
For Lighter Colors use more aggressive polish and foam pads
Note: Swirls and imperfections remaining after this step
will reoccur after waxing step products wash or wear off
Follow with Waxing Step
5. Waxing Step
Waxing fills swirls, very minor scratches and imperfections
by leaving a thin layer of wax protection
Wax does little to further refine paint after the polishing
step. After wax is washed or worn away, the imperfec-
tions remaining after polishing will reappear
Apply a thin even coat
Apply by hand on a damp pad
Apply with a Dual Action Sander using:
05729 3M Perfect-it Foam Polishing D/A Pad - 6 in.
05739 3M Perfect-it Hookit II Foam D/A Glazing Pad
05732 3M Perfect-it Hookit II DA Foam
Application Pad - 6 in.
Removes imperfections, such as car wash scratches,
medium to coarse scratches, medium oxidation and stains
Use wool pad for faster and more aggressive cutting
Use foam pad for slower and finer cutting
Follow with Polishing Step
3. Compounding Step
Damp sand with 3M Trizact disc on Dual Action Sander
Use foam interface pad for contours
Produces Semi-polished finish
Follow with Compounding Step
2. Scratch Refinement Step
OR DRY WET

Hiding vs. Removing
Paint Defects
While polishing and waxing a vehicle, you may have
noticed that some fine scratches became less visible or
even disappeared, only to reappear after the vehicle has
been washed a few times. By using the correct system of
products and procedures, many small paint defects can
be removed and will not reappear when the polish and
wax are washed and worn away.
To remove a defect from the paint surface, you must
remove the very thin layer of paint that contains the
defect by spending enough time with a compound or polish.
By removing this thin layer of paint, you actually remove
the defect. See Illustration 1.
Some scratches, acid rain pits, or other more severe
defects may not be able to be removed completely. If a
defect goes too deep into the clear coat, sanding to the
bottom of the defect may result in inadequate clear coat
thickness, or may even require a repaint. See Illustration 2.
Generally speaking, if you can feel a scratch with your
fingernail, you should not attempt to remove it completely.
However, even without sanding, many deep scratches or
other more severe defects that are compounded, polished
and waxed will be less noticeable.
3M Perfect-It Foam Pads
Instructions for Use:
Recommended speed 1500 to 2000 R.P.M. Do not
exceed 3000 R.P.M. Use only with 3M Hookit
SBS Backup Pad, PN 05717 or a 3M Perfect-It
Backup Pad, PN 05718.
To Install:
1. Center the compound pad on the backup pad.
2. Press firmly and twist to insure good contact with
backup pad.
IMPORTANT:
Use caution around trim or moldings to avoid snagging
or tearing the pad. Keep the pad flat, or nearly flat,
on surface being compounded.
To minimize the possibility of burning, reduce pressure
over sharp convex/concave areas such as detail lines,
fenders, etc. and keep surface wet with compound.
3M Foam Pad Care and Cleaning Instructions:
If pad becomes clogged, remove and install a clean
pad. Clean clogged pad as follows:
1. Rinse in warm (up to 115F) water.
2. Set wet pad face up on a flat surface and allow
to dry.
IMPORTANT:
Rinse under water faucet. Do not use soap or cleaning
solvents. Do not machine wash or dry. Do not clean
pads with a buffing spur or screwdriver.
3M Superbuff III Buffing Pad
(double-sided wool pad)
CAUTION:
3M Superbuff III Buffing Pad can spin off air-driven
polishers due to tools rapid stop. To avoid spin off,
firmly tighten buff onto adapter. Use 7/8 in. wrench
to hold adapter while tightening buff.
Buffing Pad Care and Cleaning Instructions:
Periodically rake pad with buffing spur or air nozzle
to remove excess rubbing compound or glaze. If pad
becomes clogged, remove, turn over, reinstall and
continue buffing, allowing used side to dry. Washing
pad causes shrinkage of wool fibers. If washing is
desired, use only cool (6080F) water. Do not use
hot water, strong detergents or solvents. Use washing
machines with gentle agitation only. Machine drying
is not recommended.
