FOOD SERVICE UPDATE: John Durtschi
from Chartwells was present to address
the board. He stated there were not that
many changes from last years menu.
The menu structure has changed a little
with Chartwells adding some of the more
popular food choices. The choices are
basically the same as area schools. The
concerns seem to be more with portion
size than choices. He has been in the
district at various times watching the
serving in the lines. Students seem to
have full trays. He has not observed
what is being thrown away. Their plan is
to evaluate the menu, then meet with a
concerned parent, and also with the
older students and ask their opinion.
Joni is working on a survey for high
school students. One of the challenges
this year is that its the first year that
ALL USDA guidelines are in place. There
have been a lot of supply issues with
manufacturers. Students are not limited
to a certain amount of fruits and vegetables. They can have as much as they
want. They are looking at possibly having a dessert item occasionally of a cookie
or bar. Supt. Beniak questioned what
the ramifications would be if we left the
program for students in grades 9-12.
John said he would have to check with
the State since we are in one building,
and our 9-12 students are mixed in with
the younger students. Hes thinking it
could be a bookkeeping issue if we do
this because the kitchen would have to
make 2 meals since the 9-12 grade
could not have anything made with commodities they receive. He estimates the
loss of $30-35,000 to the district. That
money would need to be recovered somehow. It was brought up that Byron and
Wayzata are trying lunches without being in the program. He said he could
check to see how theyre doing it. Tammy
suggested that we need to market it
better to let students know that they can
have as many fruits and vegetables as
they want. Chartwells will keep working
on a solution.
HIGH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
A. PREK-4 PRINCIPAL UPDATE Cindy
Hansen reported to the board about the
Worlds Best Work Force. The committee met for the first time last week and
had a great start. PreK-4 has lengthened their Target Time so they can add
math interventions this year. Teacher
evaluation has started for the year. Both
principals are sharing responsibilities
for evaluating the teachers.
Data coaches are reviewing MCA data
from last spring with teachers. The PBIS
team is implementing a monthly Panther Lunch with the principal for students with outstanding behavior. They
are trying to be creative to be able to
increase technology access.
B. WORLDS BEST WORK FORCE INITIAL MEETINGPrincipal Hansen discussed this during her report.
C. BALANCED CALENDAR DISCUSSION: Supt. Beniak reported that the
area schools are looking at a common
calendar and doing something a little
more non-traditional with longer Fall,
Winter, and Spring Breaks for students
starting in the 2017 school year.
COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION
A. MSBA PRESENTATION SUBMITTAL: Champa submitted to present at

Assesments and the new school all at
once. Charles is also worried that the
street repairs will lower the value of his
property because his trees will be damaged or removed. Jason Swarthout,
head of the pool committee, among a
group of other Pine Island residents came
forth with concern about the Pine Island
Swimming Pool and the plans for the
new pool. Mayor Steele requested raw
data from surrounding communities who
have just built new pools. Due to restrictions, council will look into a date for the
pool referendum. Kenneth Markham
wants to know when the parking lot will
be built. Wayne King came with a proposal for mailboxes in the Cul De Sacs
for snow removal. Diskerud made a
motion to approve the mailbox proposal
which was seconded by Knox. Approved
