FOOD SERVICE UPDATE: John Durtschi
from Chartwells was present to address
the board. He stated there were not that
many changes from last years menu.
The menu structure has changed a little
with Chartwells adding some of the more
popular food choices. The choices are
basically the same as area schools. The
concerns seem to be more with portion
size than choices. He has been in the
district at various times watching the
serving in the lines. Students seem to
have full trays. He has not observed
what is being thrown away. Their plan is
to evaluate the menu, then meet with a
concerned parent, and also with the
older students and ask their opinion.
Joni is working on a survey for high
school students. One of the challenges
this year is that its the first year that
ALL USDA guidelines are in place. There
have been a lot of supply issues with
manufacturers. Students are not limited
to a certain amount of fruits and vegetables. They can have as much as they
want. They are looking at possibly having a dessert item occasionally of a cookie
or bar. Supt. Beniak questioned what
the ramifications would be if we left the
program for students in grades 9-12.
John said he would have to check with
the State since we are in one building,
and our 9-12 students are mixed in with
the younger students. Hes thinking it
could be a bookkeeping issue if we do
this because the kitchen would have to
make 2 meals since the 9-12 grade
could not have anything made with commodities they receive. He estimates the
loss of $30-35,000 to the district. That
money would need to be recovered somehow. It was brought up that Byron and
Wayzata are trying lunches without being in the program. He said he could
check to see how theyre doing it. Tammy
suggested that we need to market it
better to let students know that they can
have as many fruits and vegetables as
they want. Chartwells will keep working
on a solution.
HIGH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
A. PREK-4 PRINCIPAL UPDATE Cindy
Hansen reported to the board about the
Worlds Best Work Force. The committee met for the first time last week and
had a great start. PreK-4 has lengthened their Target Time so they can add
math interventions this year. Teacher
evaluation has started for the year. Both
principals are sharing responsibilities
for evaluating the teachers.
Data coaches are reviewing MCA data
from last spring with teachers. The PBIS
team is implementing a monthly Panther Lunch with the principal for students with outstanding behavior. They
are trying to be creative to be able to
increase technology access.
B. WORLDS BEST WORK FORCE INITIAL MEETINGPrincipal Hansen discussed this during her report.
C. BALANCED CALENDAR DISCUSSION: Supt. Beniak reported that the
area schools are looking at a common
calendar and doing something a little
more non-traditional with longer Fall,
Winter, and Spring Breaks for students
starting in the 2017 school year.
COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION
A. MSBA PRESENTATION SUBMITTAL: Champa submitted to present at
the workshop about reconnecting with
your community to get a referendum
passed. We will find out in November if
we are selected.
EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT OPERATIONS
A. CUSTODIAN OPPORTUNITIES: Weve
been operating with less than a full staff

for quite a while.

We have advertised several times.
We are now looking at a couple of servicesDashir and Service Solutions. We
are looking at a way, not to replace our
staff, but to add to it. The board is
comfortable with this solution.
B. PRINCIPAL CONTRACT: The superintendent presented to the board for
the negotiation committee suggesting a
2% increase on salary each year, a $500
stipend for the next two years to recognize the additional time and commitment during the construction process,
and education language to support movement towards a doctorate with up to
$5000/year. Warneke talked about the
negotiation process. The board had concerns and decided to close the meeting
after the facility update to discuss the
contract further and bring it back to the
next meeting.
C. FUNDRAISING DOCUMENTATION:
There were some additions to the previous list that the board had seen. Motion
by Douglas, seconded by Hayden to
approve the fundraising list.
Motion carried 7-0.
D. WENDEL CONTRACT: Our architect firm has been patient while we change
wording in our contract with them. It
has gone through our attorney. Motion
by Fall, seconded by Heiden to approve
the contract with the changes. A roll call
vote was taken with Bailey, Champa,
Douglas, Fall, Hayden, Heiden, and
Warneke voting yes. No votes-none. The
motion carried 7-0.
E. VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT:
The board is asking for input from PIEA,
students, and our Aims committees to
work on a new vision statement. They
plan on a retreat possibly in January to
revise the statement.
F. PINE ISLAND TESTING POLICY:
The State is asking every district to approve their approach to testing. This
document describes our approach to
testing security. Motion by Bailey, seconded by Fall to approve the document.
Motion carried 7-0.

Deer hunters encouraged

firearms deer season begins Saturday, Nov. 8.

Buying now beats buying later as last year we sold more than
150,000 licenses on the Thursday and Friday before the firearms
season, said Steve Michaels, DNR licensing program director. A lot
of those folks end up standing in lines who didnt need to be.
Deer licenses can be purchased by Minnesota resident adults for
$30 at DNR license agents across Minnesota, by phone at 888-6654236 or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. There are additional
fees for telephone and Internet transactions. Hunters who purchase
licenses by phone and Internet will receive their deer license and tags
by mail, which can take three to five business days to arrive.
Hunters must have a valid deer license and tag in their possession
when hunting deer.
The information center and license center at DNR headquarters in
St. Paul will extend their hours on opening weekend to accommodate
additional phone calls from deer hunters. Phone lines will be open on
Friday, Nov. 7, until 8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Hunters need to be familiar with deer hunting regulations, which
are available at any DNR license agent or online at www.mndnr.gov/
regulations/hunting.
License questions should be directed to the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367.
Minnesota deer facts
Deer: The Animal
Adult female white-tailed deer weigh about 145 lbs., males 170
lbs.
The biggest white-tailed deer ever recorded in Minnesota was a
500-pound buck.
A whitetails home range is about one square mile.
Deer: Hunting
Last year, 30 percent of Minnesota firearm hunters successfully
harvested a deer. About 53 percent were antlered bucks.
70 percent of Minnesotas firearms deer harvest typically occurs
during the first three or four days of the season.
The average hunter spends five days afield during Minnesotas
firearms deer season.
Last years total deer harvest was about 170,000.
Because of a conservative 2014 season designed to boost the
statewide population, total deer harvest in 2014 is anticipated to be
considerably lower and could reach levels not experienced in decades.
Hunters can register their deer via Internet, phone or at walk-in
big-game registration stations.
The largest typical whitetail buck ever taken in Minnesota had a
Boone & Crockett score of 202; shot by John Breen in 1918 near
Funkley.
Minnesotas No. 1 non-typical whitetail buck had 43 points; shot
by 17-year-old Mitch Vakoch in 1974.
Deer: Licenses
In total, about 812,000 deer hunting licenses and permits (all
types) were sold in 2013.
95 percent of deer licenses are sold to Minnesota residents.
The DNR Information Center remained open two hours later on
the day before last years deer opener to answer more than 2,000
telephone inquiries, most of them related to the firearms opener.
Deer: Economics
Nearly 500,000 deer hunters in Minnesota.
Direct retail sales - $234 million.
Salaries, wages, business owner income - $127 million.
State and local tax revenue - $28 million.
Number of directly supported jobs 3,760.
Economic impact is greatest in Greater Minnesota.

2) Transport uncased/loaded firearm
3) Fail to validate
4) Fail to register
5) License not in possession
