Introduction
With so much going on in our everyday drawing life we have a tendency to get in an AutoCAD
rut. The goal behind this course is to show you a variety of tips that will spark a new
awareness and lead you down the road to increased productivity!
5) Right Click on the command line to retrieve previous commands from the shortcut menu.

Set up your status bar for maximum productivity. Right click on any tool and select
“Display”

Display all open files at the taskbar by setting the system variable TASKBAR to 1.

22) Drag and Drop a dimension to save all the settings and
the layer for speedy additions of new dimensions with
the same settings.
Layer Tips:
25)Freeze Columns
Use the Freeze Column option from the right
click menu to keep a column from scrolling
Using these three columns in the Layer dialog you can assign layer properties PER viewport.

AutoCAD gurus use Layers States so they can avoid constantly changing the layer settings.

34) LAYISO – Isolates layer(s) for easy editing. AutoCAD 2008 and above allows you to fade
the other layers so you can see the objects on the other layers but not accidentally modify
them.

TIMESAVERS:
37) OVERKILL
This Express tool is a great way to delete duplicate objects and clean up your drawing.
OVERKILL removes unneeded objects by deleting duplicates and combining line and arc
segments that overlap. There are multiple settings to ensure you get just the results you
want.

System Variables:
47)PEDITACCEPT
Set PEDITACCEPT to 1 to avoid the irritating “Do you want to turn it into a polyline”
question.
When set to a value of 2, these commands display the frames but do not plot them.
Note: FRAME set to 3 indicates varied settings and no override
50) PLINEGEN - Sets how linetype patterns generate around the vertices of a 2D polyline.
51) WHIPARC to 1 for smooth arcs and circles (forget dealing with VIEWRES!)
52) Set HATCHGAP to a value other than 0 so you don’t have to search for holes in your
hatching.

Attribute Tips:
55) ATTREQ – Suppresses the attribute prompts and uses the defaults
When you are in a rush and want to use the defaults for your attributes you can set
ATTREQ to 0.
57) BURST – Explode blocks without losing their assigned attribute values.

Dimensioning Tips:
88) QDIM
This fantastic underused command can help you knock out dimensions in no time
89) DIMBREAK
Your drafting instructor warned you about the dreaded crossing
dimension lines didn't he!
The process is simple. You select the dimension that you want to break and then the
dimension(s) that are on top of that dimension. AutoCAD does the rest for you!
92) DIMTMOVE
0 Moves the dimension line with dimension text
1 Adds a leader when dimension text is moved
2 Allows text to be moved freely without a leader
Almost there!
93) SELECTIONANNODISPLAY to 0 that magically turns off ghosting with annotative objects

94) Set INDEXCTL to 3 if you work with an excess of clipped xrefs (or XREFs in viewports)to
speed things up. This turns on layer and spatial indexes. AutoCAD will read in only the
objects that are inside the clipped area (or inside a viewport).
97) IMAGEQUALITY – set to Draft for faster loading images (back to High to print)
