St Catherine was the daughter of Constos, the Governor of Alexandria, Egypt,
during the reign of Emperor Maximian (305-313).
Living in the capital city, which was the centre of Hellenistic knowledge, and
being a rare beauty with superior intellect, St Catherine received an excellent
education, studying the works of the greatest Philosophers and Teachers of
antiquity.
Young men from the most worthy families of the Roman Empire sought the hand
of St Catherine, but she was not interested in any of them and she informed
her parents that she would enter into Marriage only with someone who
surpassed her in nobility, wealth, comeliness and wisdom.
St Catherines mother who was a secret Christian, sent her to her own Spiritual
Father - a saintly Elder who lived in a cave outside the city - for advice.
After listening to St Catherine, the Elder told her of a Youth Who surpassed her in
everything. His Countenance is more radiant than the shining of the sun, and
all of Creation is governed by His Wisdom. His Riches are given to all the
Nations of the world, yet they never diminish. His Compassion is unequaled.
This description of the Heavenly Bridegroom produced in the soul of the Holy
Maiden an ardent desire to meet Him. If you do as I tell you, said the Monk,
you will gaze upon the Countenance of this Most Illustrious Man.
Before she departed, the Holy Elder handed her an Icon of our Lady, the Ever
Blessed Theotokos with Her Divine Child, our Lord Jesus, and instructed her to
pray with Faith to the Queen of Heaven, the Mother of the Heavenly
Bridegroom, and She would hear her Prayers and grant her her hearts desire.
St Catherine prayed all night and was permitted to behold the Most Holy Virgin,
Who said Her Divine Son: Behold Thy Handmaiden, Catherine - how fair and
virtuous she is. But the Divine Child turned His Face away from her saying:
No! She is ugly and unbelieving. She is a foolish pauper, and I cannot bear
to look at her until she forsakes her impiety.
St Catherine returned to the Holy Elder, deeply saddened, and told him what she
had seen in the Vision.
He then lovingly received her as his Disciple and began to teach her everything
concerning our True Faith of Christ.
He encouraged her to preserve her purity and integrity and to pray unceasingly.
When he had duly instructed her in all matters of Christianity, St Catherine finally
received the Holy Mystery of Baptism and Chrismation from him.
St Catherine was granted another Holy Vision of our Lady Theotokos with Her
Divine Child Who now looked tenderly at her as He presented her with a
beautiful ring as a wondrous Token of her Betrothal to the Heavenly
Bridegroom. (This ring is still on her hand to this very day.)
At that time Emperor Maximian was in Alexandria for a pagan festival, which was
celebrated with great extravagant splendour and vast crowds of people.
The cries of the innumerable sacrificial animals, the smoke and the smell of the
burnt sacrifices, the endless blazing of fires, and the bustling crowds at the
arenas defiled the city of Alexandria.
Faithful Christians who adamantely refused to deny or renounce our Lord despite
all horrific tortures were also taken to the arenas where wild, starving and
terrorified beasts would kill and consume them, while the blood-thirsty masses
cheered.
Some Holy Martyrs were condemned to death by being burnt or by being tortured
by various indescribable forms of brutality, which was witnessed by the public.
St Catherines Love for all the Christian Martyrs and her fervent desire to ease their
sufferings compelled her to address the pagan priests and, even more boldly,
Emperor Maximian.

Today the All Pure Virgin is led to the
Temple, to become the Abode of God
the King of all and Nourisher of Life.
Today the Most Pure Sanctuary is
introduced into the Holy of Holies as a
three year old Heifer. Let us cry out to
Her as once did the Angel: Rejoice!
Only Blessed among women!
S T C A T H E R I N E O F A L E X A N D R I A - 2 5 N O V E M B E R 3
After she had introduced herself, St Catherine confessed her own Faith in the One
True God and with profound Wisdom she exposed and denounced the errors
of paganism.
Her astounding beauty captivated the Emperor, who wanted to convince her of
the superiority of pagan wisdom by ordering fifty of the most learned
Philosophers and Rhetoricians of the Empire to debate against her.
Nevertheless, St Catherine as young as she was defeated all the arguments of
the fifty erudite experts, even causing some of them to believe in Christ and His
Divine Truth, which enraged the frustrated Emperor, causing them to also be
condemned to death.
St Catherine made the Sign of the Cross over the brave Holy Martyrs, before they
were burnt to death by the order of the Emperor, who no longer expected to
convince St Catherine to renounce her Faith.
As a last desperate effort, Emperor Maximian even tried to tempt her with the
promise of immence wealth and fame, which was immediately rejected.
St Catherine was arrested and subjected to the worst possible tortures and public
humiliation and degradation while being imprisoned.
The Empress, Augusta, who had heard much about the Saint, managed to
persuade the military Commander, Porphyrios, with a detachment of soldiers,
to accompany her to the prison, where upon meeting St Catherine, she was
deeply impressed by her strong spirit and how she radiated Divine Grace.
The Holy Martyr took the opportunity to explain the Christian Teaching to them all
and upon hearing the Divine Truth as never before, they all converted to
Christ.
The following day St Catherine was presented to the Judgement Court where,
under the threat of being broken on the wheel, they urged the lovely young
Martyr to renounce the Christian Faith and simply offer sacrifice to the gods.
St Catherine steadfastly confessed Christ before voluntarily walking to the spiked
wheels of torture.
However, as the executioners tied her to the device, an Angel of God caused it to
shatter into pieces, which shocked the crowd of pagan witnesses.
Having beheld this Miracle, Empress Augusta and the Imperial Courtier,
Porphyrios, together with 200 soldiers, confessed their Faith in Christ in front of
everyone.
Consequently, they were all condemned to death by being beheaded by sword.
Emperor Maximian, was desperate to make her renounce Christ so he made a
proposal of Marriage to St Catherine but was again immediately rejected.
St Catherine remained unwaveringly Faithful to Christ loudly confessing her
undying Fidelity to Her Heavenly Bridegroom. Then, with a heartfelt Prayer to
Him, she lay her head on the executioners block, and was finally Perfected by
sword.
The Holy Relics of St Catherine were carried by Angels of God to Mount Sinai, and
in the sixth century, her venerable head and left hand were found due to a
Divine Revelation,
The Holy Relics were subsequently transferred with honour and reverence to a
newly-constructed church of the Sinai Monastery, which had been built by
Emperor Justinian.
St Catherine is called upon for her Intercessory Prayers to God for relief and
assistance during difficult childbirth.
Pilgrims to her Monastery on Mount Sinai are given souvenir rings as a
remembrance of their visit.
May her memory be Eternal and may St Catherine continue to Intercede with
Christ for the Salvation of our immortal soul.

Our Lord told this Parable:
... then the Kingdom of Heaven shall
be compared to ten Maidens who
took their lamps and went to meet
the Bridegroom.
Five of them were Foolish, and five
were Wise.
For when the Foolish took their
lamps, they took no oil with them;

But the Wise took flasks of oil with
their lamps.

As the Bridegroom was delayed, they
all slumbered and slept.
But at midnight there was a cry:
Behold, the Bridegroom! Come out
to meet Him!
Then, all those Maidens arose and
trimmed their lamps.
And the Foolish said to the Wise:
Give us some of your oil, for our
lamps are going out.
But the Wise replied: Perhaps there
will not be enough for us and for
you; go, rather, to the dealers and
buy for yourselves.
And while they went to buy, the
Bridegroom came, and those who
were ready, went in with Him to
the Marriage Feast; and the Door
was shut.
Afterwards, the other Maidens came
also, crying out: Lord! Lord! Open
to us!
And He replied: Truly, I say to you:
I do not know you!
Watch therefore, for you know
neither the day nor the hour.

Glory to Thee, O God, Glory to
Thee!

Have mercy upon me, O God,
according to Thy Great Mercy;
according to the multitude of Thy
Mercies do away mine offences.
Thou led a Spiritual Life, and thus Thou
captivated the godless Tribunal, and
Thou stood Victorious, O Catherine,
with dignity, decked in Divine
Brilliance as if with flowers. And,
having put on the Power of God,
Thou ridiculed the tyrants Decree,
and Thou stifled the nonsensical
chatter of the orators, O Holy Martyr
who suffered so much.

Beholding the Grace of Gods ineffable
and Divine Mysteries evident and
manifestly fulfilled in the Virgin, I
rejoice; and beyond understanding is
the ineffable and strange manner
whereby the Immaculate Maiden
alone proved to be Chosen above all
Creation visible and invisible.
Therefore, wishing to extol Her, I am
greatly perplexed in mind and
speech. Nevertheless I dare to do so,

From childhood the Martyr grasped the
Wisdom that comes from God, and
she was versed in all secular
knowledge. Knowing from this the
movement and intelligent Design of
the elements as well as the One Who
made them in the beginning by His
Word, she offered Him gratitude day
and night. She threw down the idols
along with those who worshipped
them AND SPAT ON THE
KNOWLEDGE OF THE ORATORS.
