From the editor:
After nearly three years of being a part of
St. Clair Shores, this will be the final edi-
tion of the Connection.
We appreciate the support of many ad-
vertisers in the community and the strong
relationships were fortunate to be part of.
Weve enjoyed sharing so many stories of
the great residents and businesses in the
Shores.
Thank you.

A pair of openings at
civic arena are soon to
be repaired, thanks to
the approval of a
$23,900 bid awarded to
Metro Trades LLC for
the project.
This project is part of
the weight room renova-
tions we had done,
Community Development
and Inspection Director
Chris Rayes said. We
were there and noticed
some cracking in the up-
per floor.
When officials investi-
gated the cracks, it was
discovered the building
was not reconstructed
correctly, Rayes said.
A beam that was to
supposed to be put in
above the new opening
was done with angle
irons, which is not strong
enough to support the
weight above and the
roof above, he said.
The city did look into
legal action against the
company that originally
did the work, Rayes told
the council, but there
was no resolution going
that route.
The company had dis-
solved and can not be
found, he sai d.
Therefore we could not
go after them for the
cost.
The project was origi-
nally put out for bid ear-
lier this year, but the two
bids the city received
were simply too high,
Rayes said.
We rejected those
bids, he explained. The
original bid was about
$35,000 and the revised
bid is $23,900 to redo the
openings and support
them properly.

to fix contractor

City council voted to move for-
ward with the renovation of a fore-
closed property with the approval
of a $26,950 bid to Metro Trade
LLC to rehab the house.
Just what to do with that proper-
ty after rehab was brought into
question by council.
The 21716 11 Mile Road property
was acquired as part of the 2014
Tax Foreclosure Program
This is one of two
properties acquired in this years
tax sal e, Communi ty
Development and Inspection
Department Director Chris Rayes
said. This one was acquired for
$3,569, our total, including the util-
ities and little bit of materials in
there is $4,213.
City officials estimate the proper-
ty, rehabilitated, would be about
$40,000, Rayes said.
The renovations are extreme and
included a new furnace, water
tank, redone floors, kitchen and a
new electrical panel.
All of that is in disrepair, Rayes
said.
Metro Trade LLC is currently
renovating a home for the city on
Grant, Councilman Anthony Tiseo
pointed out.
I think theyre doing a really
good job, Tiseo said.
Councilwoman Candice Rusie
voiced concern about the resale
value of the property even after
the renovations.
I think this is a lot for a condo,
Rusie said. I would hate for us to
put this in, then sell it for less
than we could even renovate it
for.
Rusie added she would like to
explore the possibility of putting
the property in the citys rental
program.
Other council members were
also not comfortable with the pro-
posal, citing the possibility of
bringing the property up to code
only, then selling to an investor
perhaps.
This seems a lot for a condo,
Councilman John Caron said.
Im not comfortable with the
proposal as it is now.
Despite the concerns raised,
council voted 4-3 to approve the
proposal.

Seventh grade students
at Lake Shores Kennedy
Middle School took part
in what has become a
time-honored tradition at
the school the science
fair.
I really like it,
Kennedy Middle School
seventh grade student
Mia Moceri said. It was a
lot of fun to put the whole
thing together and then
we get to display what we
discovered at the fair.
Moceri and her class-
mates lined the schools
gymnasium while hun-
dreds of parents, family
members, and members
of the community pur-
sued each display, many
taking the time to have
the students explain the
experiments.
I find it very engag-
ing, science fair patron
Frank Arugla said. Im
blown away by how in-
depth some of these are
and how well these kids
have a grasp on some of
these concepts. Ive been
to this a few times and
each time I leave im-
pressed.

were not caught by con-
tract inspectors brought
in by the city for the
original project.
We investigated su-
ing the inspection ser-
vice as well, Rayes said.
But the odds were not
very likely of collecting
the money back.
City attorney, Robert
Ihre, explained.
The amount in con-
troversy, with respect to
what the city would
likely spend to go after
it, made it real iffy, Ihre
said. We did not feel
comfortable telling the
city to spend that kind
of money to pursue
them without some kind
of assurance that we
would get that money
back. We cant say for
sure we would get that
money back.
A decision was also
made to pursue the in-
spection service legally.
It makes perfect
sense to pursue them,
Ihre said.
We have someone
who didnt do the work
right, Councilman
Chris Vitale said. We
had inspection compa-
ny we hired to make
sure they did the work
right. They didnt do
that. Theres no ques-
tion about that. I do
think we should pursue
it.
Legal action aside, the
repairs were approved
by council 7-0, with le-
gal action in the works.
Thats pretty bad
when we have to use
our money, Mayor Kip
Wal by sai d. We
couldve used that mon-
ey in a park, in the skate
park. Do everything you
can Mr. Ihre to get our
money.

Children came to the li-
brary Saturday afternoon
in costumes that ranged
from Batman to dinosaurs
to Disney princesses, and
just about everything in
between.
The librarys Halloween
craft event, which also in-
cludes several stops
throughout the facility for
treats and other goodies.
Its always a real popu-
lar thing here, youth ser-
vices librarian Liz Dwerek
said. Its so much fun, too,
even for us. To see the kids
in their costumes and hav-
ing a good time. Thats a
lot of fun for everyone.
The children got to cre-
ate a pair of spooky crafts
than make the rounds
throughout the library
picking up treats from
members of the Teen
Advisory Board.
These teens volunteer to
help out at the event,
Dwerek said.
We usually have be-
tween eight and 12 teens
come to help out, she
said. Today we have 18
helping out, which is a big
help.
The event is organized
by Dwerek and the staff,
and that ranges from pick-
ing out the crafts to orga-
nizing treat stations.
We try and figure out
cool treats that are not all
candy, she explained.
We try and limit the can-
dy because there are some
kids who cant have it be-
cause of allergies or things
like that. So, we try and
make sure there is some-
thing for everyone.
Spider rings and ghosts,
for example, were part of
the giveaways at this
years event.
My kids are having a
great time, resident Claire
Cuthbert-Jones said. Its
so great for the library to
do this for the children.

Sissy SSSSiiii
COURTESY OF MUTTS OF MOTOWN
Pet of the Week
Say hello to Sissy. This tiny little teacup chihuahua girl is looking for a loving forever home after a
rough, and seemingly dramatic life before rescue. Originally from Chicago, Sissy was rescued
by another group before being brought to Michigan and Mutts of
Motown. Sissy loves to play and loves other dogs (and even cats),
but it wasnt always that way for this sweet little girl. She likely expe-
rienced some profound and traumatic experiences, experiences that
caused her to yelp every time someone touched her. However, time,
medical intervention and some anti-anxiety medication has helped
her make great strides. Now, shes ready for a home to call her own.
Sissy would do best in a calm home and requires medication every
day. If you would like to learn more about Sissy, please call (586) 690-
2808 or Google Mutts of Motown.

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD

Te return to school and
indoors can precipitate more
contact between people and
an increase in certain infec-
tions. One such condition is
scabies, characterized by a
rash that itches intensely at
night, located anywhere be-
low the face.
Scabies is a highly conta-
gious skin disease spread
by skin to skin contact. It is
caused by a mite too small
to see with the naked eye.
It afects men, women and
children of all ages, with the
most common areas of infec-
tion being the hands, breasts,
armpits, genital area and
waistline.
Untreated, rashes may be-
come raw and bleed due to
aggressive scratching. Be-
cause rashes can indicate
other skin conditions, such
as dermatitis, it is important
that patients who suspect a
scabies infection see their
physician or dermatologist to
confrm the diagnosis.
Fortunately, there are safe
and efective treatments that
will eliminate scabies and
relieve the itching. In many
circumstances, all members
of the family will need to be
treated along with the infect-
ed patient.
To learn more about scabies
and its treatment, contact
