AFRICAN PRISONS PROJECT

African Prisons Project (APP) works to restore dignity and hope to prisoners across Uganda
and Kenya. Were a dynamic and young charity, headquartered in London. Our
programmatic team work on the ground in African prisons to deliver educational
opportunities and drive penal reform. We provide front-line services to the most
marginalised and abandoned individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our unique, hands-on, and
multifaceted approach drives systemic and sustainable change, prison by prison and person
by person.

Fundraising Manager Job Description

Salary: 40,000 45,000, full time, flexible hours (part-time available)

Purpose: Generating funds to ensure the sustainability of our work in Africa is the main task
of APP UK. The UK Fundraising Manager will be responsible for generating short, medium
and long-term income, with an emphasis on raising unrestricted funds. He/she will lead on
creating and implementing the fundraising strategy for APP.

Reports to: Founder and Director General, Alexander McLean


Key Responsibilities

Fundraising:

Develop a fundraising strategy for APP in collaboration with the Trustees, Director
General and Senior Management Team;
Lead on implementation of the fundraising strategy;
Complete regular Trust and Foundation grant applications in line with project needs
and for core costs;
Develop new donor relationships (with individuals, businesses, and funding
organisations);
Nurture existing donor relationships and cultivate those passed on by the Director
General;
Identify and manage fundraising intern/volunteers;
Provide fundraising expertise to production of supporter newsletters and web
communication;
Develop new participatory fundraising events for APP supporters and appropriate
marketing tools;
Organise and coordinate a minimum of one major donor event per year;
Investigate and develop new income streams;
Keep abreast of new developments in fundraising;
Assist the Director General with other fundraising and business development tasks
as required.

Administration:

Work with the support of APPs administrator to ensure that all donors are thanked
in a timely manner;
Maintain accurate records of donor contact details and conversations, building a
full CRM system and prospect pipeline;
Maintain an accurate grants reporting calendar and liaise with the relevant project
personnel to ensure applications and reports are submitted on time.

Public Relations and Networking:

Help develop, manage and nurture all of APPs external relationships with the
media, and other charitable organisations to strengthen our profile;
Attend events to promote the APP brand, work and to network;
Manage APPs social media presence in order to build support and awareness of
APP.

Reporting:

Maintain a register of upcoming bids and communicate information needs with staff
in a timely manner;
A brief written weekly activities and fundraising report in arrears;
Monthly fundraising updates to Trustees;
An annual sum-up report.

Person Specification

Ethical, principle-based leader;
Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to be diplomatic, manage
internal politics, and build consensus around a sensitive and complex issue;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Experience creating and implementing fundraising strategies;
Knowledge of principles of institutional advancement, development and
philanthropy, and demonstrated knowledge of donor cultivation and solicitation
techniques, including events;
Strong process management skills, financial operations experience and computer
proficiency with CRM software;
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, with a willingness to take calculated
risks;
Empathy with our aims and objectives is essential;
Ideally, educated to degree level;
Dynamic, hard working, and an excellent team player;
Enthusiasm, sense of humor and the ability to be flexible.
