Wireless Module

Wireless functionality allows you to simulate networks that include moving sites (both nodes and subnetworks),
radio communications, or both. Wireless functionality is included in OPNET's Modeler Wireless Suite and
Modeler Wireless Suite for Defense, and is optional functionality for other solutions.

The Wireless functionality expands your simulation capabilities to include wireless LANs, cellular telephone
networks, satellites, and many other situations typical of modern communications.

Terrain Modeling Module (TMM)

Terrain Modeling Module (TMM) enables you to enhance the accuracy of simulations by taking into account
signal loss due to terrain effects. TMM functionality is included in OPNET's Modeler Wireless Suite for Defense
solution, and is optional functionality for other solutions.

TMM can use both physical features (such as mountains and the curvature of the earth) and environmental factors
(such as ground conductivity and surface refractivity) as inputs to calculate signal loss. You can specify the
propagation model and parameters used to perform signal-loss calculations.

TIREM Propagation Model

The Terrain Integrated Rough Earth Model (TIREM) propagation model is available from OPNET as optional
functionality for Windows and Solaris. The TIREM functionality includes the TIREM3 and TIREM4 models,
along with the necessary support files to allow them to be specified in Terrain Modeling Module and used in
simulations. TIREM3 is the standard propagation model for the United States Department of Defense. TIREM4 is
an optimized version of TIREM3 that provides faster computation of path loss values, especially for detailed
terrain profiles.

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a Third Generation (3G) wireless protocol that is part
of the International Telecommunications Union's IMT-2000 vision of a global family of 3G mobile
communications systems. UMTS is expected to deliver low-cost, high-capacity mobile communications, offering
data rates up to 2-Mbps. The UMTS model suite allows you to model UMTS networks to evaluate end-to-end
service quality, throughput, drop rate, end-to-end delay, and delay jitter through the radio access network and core
packet network. It can also be used to evaluate the feasibility of offering a mix of service classes given quality of
service requirements. This model is available as part of the specialized model library.

WiMAX (802.16e)

The WiMAX model suite includes a discrete event simulation model that lets you analyze network performance in
wireless metropolitan area networks. The WiMAX model suite includes the features of the IEEE 802.16e standard.
Note that the Wireless Module and a license for the WiMAX specialized model are needed to run simulations. The
WiMAX license is also required for viewing or modifying WiMAX process models.

IPv6

Internet Protocol, Version 6 (IPv6) is a newer version of the Internet Protocol that was designed as a successor to
IP, Version 4 (IPv4). Discrete event simulations require a license for IPv6 for R&D.

MPLS

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a multi-layer switching technology that uses labels to determine how
packets are forwarded through a network. Modeler includes several complementary technologies that you can use
to model and analyze MPLS networks.

System-in-the-Loop (SITL)

System-in-the-Loop (SITL) provides an interface between a simulated network running in Modeler and a physical
network. Packets traveling between the simulated and real networks are translated between real and simulation
formats. With SITL, physical hardware and a simulation can interact as a unified system.

High-Level Architecture (HLA)

The High-Level Architecture (HLA) functionality in Modeler enables you to include a simulation as one of the
federates in an HLA federation, and thus to both affectand be affected byevents in other federates. HLA
functionality is included in OPNET's Modeler Wireless Suite for Defense, and is optional functionality for certain
other solutions.
Running multiple concurrent simulations increases the accuracy of each individual simulation: for example, when
communication nodes in the Modeler simulation move in the pattern described by another federate, the results of
the simulation (cell loss, response time, and so on) show the effect of that movement. When the results are
published to other federates, their simulations are similarly affected.

3D Network Visualizer (3DNV)

3D Network Visualizer (3DNV) enables you to create and view 3D animations of networks and their
communications. 3D animations are especially useful for visualizing the effects of terrain on mobile network
performance, behavior and operations. You can use 3D Network Visualizer to understand and visualize mobile
networking behaviors such as terrain masking, propagation loss, interference, and ad hoc routing. 3D Network
Visualizer functionality is included in the Modeler Wireless Suite for Defense solution, and is optional for other
solutions.

3D Network Visualizer shows three-dimensional animations based on topology information, node relationships,
performance statistics, and terrain data. You can use the 3D Network Visualizer to visualize network
characteristics such as line-of-sight, transmission quality, throughput, delay, and message status information.

LTE Specialized Module

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is a 4G broadband wireless technology for mobile voice and data networks that
promises increased data rates, improved performance, and more efficient spectrum utilization. Leading telecom
operators worldwide have chosen LTE for their 4G network deployments.
The OPNET LTE Specialized Model is available for OPNET Modeler Wireless Suite and OPNET Modeler
Wireless Suite for Defense. It supports Release 8 of the 3GPP standard.
Network equipment manufacturers, telecom service providers, and defense organizations use the model to design
LTE networks and devices. Studies include:
Evaluating custom scheduling algorithms for LTE base and subscriber stations
Developing and testing QoS mechanisms for various applications
Validating overall network behavior encompassing LTE access network and IP backbone
Visualizing live application performance over a simulated LTE network infrastructure
