My calling to be a Secular Servite
has been an amazing spiritual
journey. My personal experience of
caring for my husband when he was
battling Stage IV cancer 16 years
ago has taught me that caring for
the whole family is essential when
tending to the needs of the person
who is ill, injured or dying. My
husband was 33 years of age and
we were expecting our frst born
child when we were faced with our
journey of sufering. Te prognosis
was not in our favor as they only
ofered a less than 3% chance of
survival. We were struggling with
the fact that our daughter may
never get the chance to know and
love her father. Our faith was our
only constant and we believed that
the Lord would take care of us either
way. We tapped into the beauty of
our Catholic faith and the love of
our family and friends as our source
of strength and healing. Te Holy
Spirit sent us hope through the
people he placed in our path. Father
Peter Mary Rookey OSM and the
Cross at Queen of Heaven were
instrumental for bringing peace to
our hearts as we experienced the
presence of God in the midst of our
time of sufering.
Te Blessed Mother and other
saints became intimate companions
for us in our prayer life. Te image
of Our Sorrowful Mother sitting at
the foot of the Cross became a vivid
reminder that despite our sufering
we can trust in the Goodness of
Gods Will. Like Mary, I shared in
the sufering of my husbands pain
and sorrow while bringing hope
and peace through my love and
presence. It was through this shared
sufering that I began to gain greater
insights of Our Mothers Sorrows.
Praise be to Jesus my husband was
healed by the Grace of our Lord!
Afterwards I entered into a two
year discernment process where
I discovered that Te Lord was
calling me to serve him in a special
way as a Chaplain. I studied at
Dominican University and have

had the privilege of serving the
Lord and His people for the past
11 years at Centegra Hospital
McHenry, Illinois. Te Blessed
Mother inspires my ministry as she
is the perfect model for the ministry
of presence. She has taught me
that the power of presence during
times of trauma and death is more
meaningful than any other pastoral
support or counsel I can ofer. Like
Mary who sufered alongside of
Jesus and stood silently, ofering
herself as a gift, I too ofer myself
as I stand with people sharing in
the midst of their anxiety or fear
by ofering hope. Te Hope that
Christ makes all things new.
Approximately 6 years ago, Te
Lord once again planted in my
heart the desire to join a religious
community ( Psalm 37:4 Delight
yourself in the Lord; And He
will give you the desires of your
heart). It took 5 years of prayer and
discernment before the Lord made
it clear that I was to enter into the
Secular Order of Servites. I took
my Promise in August of 2013!
Te charism of hospitality and
compassion has been the bedrock of
who I am. Tis Divine call to Gods
service has been an undeniable
blessing as a disciple and Servant of
Mary. In addition to my role as a
hospital chaplain, my husband and
I have the honor to lead a monthly
St. Peregrine Service at our parish
that includes personal testimonials
and Anointing by our pastor. Te
Servites have blessed St Francis de
Sales in Lake Zurich with a relic
of St. Peregrine that each person is
able to bless themselves with during
the candle lighting. It is my hope
and prayer through my pastoral
ministry and my Secular Servite
identity that I can bring love,
compassion, hope and peace to the
sick and dying and their loved ones
who sufer alongside of them.

A Tribute to My Friend, Father John LeMay
Mary Ann Andersen, OSSM
I was a new friend who listened to Father Jacks stories
of old. He worked to make it a meaningful sharing,
even buying a book How to Write Your Memoirs
for Dummies. We both laughed hysterically when
he told me with a twinkle in his eye what he did. He
also wanted to thank the many people who helped him
along the way. Using his remarkable memory, wit, and
signature laughter, he spoke of good times and bad. But
I have always been struck most by his pain of learning
he was not able to achieve the academic performance
required to be a priest. What a burden it was to accept
that God might have other plans for him. During
this same time, Father Jack was greatly infuenced by
St. Damian, who worked and died among the lepers
in Hawaii. St. Damian stirred within him the desire to
become a missionary priest. And now: No priesthood,
no missionary work, what to do?
Soon enough though Father Jack was invited to become
a brother and eventually work in Zululand, South
Africa, building new churches. Tis he did in the most
primitive conditions, making bricks one by one out of
local clay, stone and other appropriate local material.
He was happy; he was strong; he was funny; he was
devoted to his task. While building churches, he built
relationships, friends, extended family, and a community
of support reaching far and wide throughout the world.
Among the many stories Father Jack shared with me was
one about his fathers visit to Zululand and a holiday
they took together. It was during this trip Jack told
his Dad he was thinking about trying again to become
a priest. Tey needed priests in South Africa and Jack
felt he could be of some good. His father encouraged
him to go for it. Tis second decision to pursue the
priesthood led Father Jack down another tough road of
studies and required academic achievement. Again he
questioned whether he could do it. But, God said, Yes
Jack. Yes, you can. And he did.
Father Jack shared with deep emotion what that frst
day of being a priest felt like, what his frst Mass felt
like, and how humbled he was by fnally realizing the
dream he had so many years before, thinking it could
never be. But, it could be, and it was, and he blessed
many by his will and his devotion, his obedience and
simple joy.
God works in mysterious ways. Father Jack did become
what he wanted, a missionary priest. Oh not traveling
down the ordinary path of other missionary priests, but
rather after years of faithful service as a brother, with a
steady tenacity, a moving forward no matter what the
odds, qualities he brought through to the end of his life
when each step was a struggle with Parkinsons. His
was an extraordinary life kept hidden behind a veil of
an ordinary man.
Father Jack and I never met when we didnt have a good
laugh. We never met when we didnt share a prayer
or when I didnt ask for his blessing. Give me you
blessing, Father Jack. And he did and I felt the grace of
God pour out from his hands.
We can be happy he realized his dream while giving so
much. We can be confdent in his safe arrival home
where his Heavenly Father says, Well done! And we
can be sure he will be greeted by friends and family who
have gone before him saying, Come along, Jack, Its
time for a Sundowner!

Te Rite of the Promise
On Saturday evening, July 26,
2014, JoNell Anton, Bernadette
Casserly and Eleanor Ulaszek were
received into the Secular Servite
Community of Annunciata during
the 5:00 P.M. Mass. Te Rite of
Promise occurred immediately
after the homily with Fr. Warsay,
the pastor, presiding. After a period
of discernment and study, all three
are a welcomed addition to the
Secular Servite Community. Tose
who witnessed this event were
Secular Servites from communities
around the Chicagoland area. All
those in attendance also renewed
the promise along with the new
members. Te families of the newly
admitted members were also present
at the Mass. Tose who attended
the Mass who are parishioners of
Annunciata were able to witness
this event as well. lt was as though
the Servite family was welcoming
Eleanor, JoNell and Bernadette into
the order. Following the Mass was
a reception held in the school gym
for the newly admitted and their
families. Organizing the reception
were two council members,
Pat Farrell, Diane Czaszewicz,
formation director, Pat Zima and
the newly admitted members as
well. We enjoyed sandwiches and
pastries along with relish and a
beautiful cake. Bernadette ordered
cookies with the symbol of the
Servants of Mary logo and a picture
of the Sorrowful Mother. Our new
sisters will be a great asset to our
community.
Te Day of Recollection
On Saturday, August 2, about 45
Secular Servites and others were
present for a Day of Recollection
at the Servite Mantellate Sisters
Marian Lake Spiritual Center
in Plainfeld, lL. Te weather
was perfect as if in answer to our
prayers. Te schedule included two
conferences by Fr. Bob Warsey,
OSM, who presented images of
Mary. He began with titles of Our
Lady from the Litany of Loretto.
Te second conference was a
description of the painting, Mary,
Untier of Knots, with the story
behind the work of art and the
recent novena that Pope Francis
composed. Fr. Warsey informed
us that the painting depicted
the prayers to Our Lady from a
certain nobleman who had marital
troubles. He was encouraged to
pray to Our Lady of Good Counsel
that was the origin of Mary,
Untier of Knots. Te Eucharist
was followed by a lunch. After the
second conference and refection,
we all prayed the Servite Rosary
near the Lake. We are fortunate
to have Fr. Warsey as the speaker
for this conference. Te material
and presentation was excellent as
always.

Diakonia of Kindness
Hillside, IL
Sr. Margaret Valois, OSM
On June 28, 2014, Bruce and Lillian Almeroth,OSSM,
professed the Promise in the Servite Lay Diakonia. Fr.
John Fontana,OSM, Prior Provincial, presided at the
beautiful ceremony, which took place at Our Lady of
Sorrows Basilica, Chicago, Illinois.
Bruce and Lills entire family were participants in the
liturgical service. During the ceremony, Bruce and Lill
proclaimed a Servite Creed, which gives witness to all
of their love for Christ, for His Mother, Mary, as well
as for the Church and the Order of Servants of Mary.
Sts. Alexis and Juliana OSSM Community, Hillside,
Illinois, prepared a delicious luncheon, which followed
the Promise Ceremony. Bruce and Lill are parishioners
of St. Domitilla Parish, Hillside, Illinois and are very
active in the activities of the parish as well as in those of
the Secular Order.
Servite Lay Diakonia is a movement made up of lay
people who have taken on and share the love and
responsibility of the Servants of Mary. Diakonia means
servant, for they live their lives in a special way as a
family (Domestic Church), praying the Lectio Divina
(listening to the Word of God) and the Christian Prayer
of the Liturgy of the Hours. As their daily life unfolds,
the Diakonia family strives to share their treasure of
faith with their children and extended family members.
Bruce and Lill met once a month with Sister Margaret
Valois,OSM, Formation Director, in order to better
understand the obligations and lifestyle of the Lay
Diakonia Family.
Creed
As our way of life, we commit ourselves to the Gospel. On
our journey we try to live a life of selfess love. We sometimes
fail, but we try again. Jesus is our beginning, our Way and our
goal to Eternal Life!
We follow Jesus, who was poor. We further commit ourselves
to reaching out in service and love to the poor.
We seek to become instruments of peace, like Christ, our
Peacemaker. We declare our loyalty to the Church, to Christ
and to His Sorrowful Mother.
Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we seek a spirit of
dialogue and cooperation with the Churchs Shepherds.
We are aware of our obligations as baptized Catholics to
share in the life of the mission of the Church: called by Christ,
as Lay Apostles, and as Lay Diakonia of Kindness.
We make every efort to continue to live on this earth in
love and joy! In this way we hope to fulfll our purpose as
Christians. We strive to achieve this Christ-like goal, through
the Holy Eucharist, through prayer and an ever-growing love
for Mary.
We wish to live out the rest of our lives as a Diakonia Family
in the Servite Order. With the love and support of you, our
brothers and sisters, we hope to achieve the plan and goals
that God has for us.
AMEN.
In a world, where many families have lost the importance
of faith and pray, may there soon be other families who
will follow in the way of the Servite Lay Diakonia
movement.

From the Diakonia of the Via Matris,
Diakonia of Joy, and Diakonia of Life
Sr. Dominica Efertz, OSM
Greetings and prayerful wishes as we celebrate the
beautiful feast of Our Lady of Sorrows! It was also the
occasion of 2nd anniversary of their Promise Day, and
the family feastday of the Silvis Family - Diakonia of
Via Matris.
On Sunday afternoon, September 14th, our three
families gathered at the home of Curt and Jacene
Silvis. It was truly a joyful time as everyone exchanged
greetings. One of the children commented, Its been
too long since weve been together.
We began by praying the Servite Rosary. Meditating on
the Seven Sorrows of Mary, we refected on how the
sorrowful events in Marys life often relate directly to
our own, and how we look to Mary for the strength
to endure those suferings. We discover that we are not
alone; we draw our inspiration from Mary who stood so
courageously at the foot of the Cross as she witnessed
the death of her Son.
After prayer we leisurely shared a delicious meal and
wonderful conversation. Our appetites being satisfed
we felt the need for some exercise. So we (all 17 of us)
headed for the athletic feld at the public school and
played a game of kick-ball. You would have enjoyed the
youngest one (Joseph Nauertz, who was celebrating his
3rd birthday that day). He ran around the bases non-stop
when we was up to kick, and made several homeruns!
Who wouldnt want him on their team! By the time we
fnished playing it was time for birthday cake. What an
enjoyable afternoon and evening. Everyone is looking
forward to the next gathering in October.
On Monday, September 15th, the Secular Servites,
Mary Mother of Compassion Community celebrated
the feastday by attending Holy Mass together in the
morning, and went out for breakfast afterwards.
We hope everyone is enjoying these fall days. Soon
the Northwoods where we live will be a panorama of
colored leaves - one of the blessings of living in this part
of the country.
We keep all of our Servite friends in our prayers.

by the schools in Petit-Gove.
Te Child Jesus School provides a basic education for the
children, as well as providing school supplies, uniforms
and a nourishing meal each day the children attend
class. Te children also receive religious formation and
instructions to prepare them for the Sacraments as well
as learning the basic prayers and, of course, songs of
praise and thanksgiving to God.

St. Catherine of Siena Parish,
Kissimmee on July 24, 2014. Fr.

the good qualities of our Secular

Mary Queen of the Servants Community
Palm Bay, FL
Deacon Jack Rhine, OSSM
After a long time of having no one or one person make
Te Promise in recent years, we thought that we hit the
mother lode with three new Servites who made their
Promise August 19. Te new Servites are Randy Allen,
OSSM; Judy Fleming, OSSM; and Alice Shugart
OSSM. It was a particularly poignant moment for Judy,
who completed formation many years ago but hadnt
made Te Promise due to medical reasons.
Te event was at a Mass celebrated by Fr. Aland Jean.
Deacon Jack Rhine was the homilist and received Te
Promise. It marked an early celebration of the Mass of St.
Philip Benizi. Deacon Jack stressed the life of St. Philip
as an example for Christians and especially for Servites.
Te Mass was also a tribute to the late Sr. Rosemary
Mayer, OSM, who was the long time Spiritual Assistant
for the St. Peregrine Community, Kissimmee, Florida
and her life of dedication was held up as an example of
Servite living.
We were joined by members of the Mother of Divine
Mercy OSSM Community, West Palm Beach. In the
Servite tradition, members of the Mary, Queen of the
Servants Community provided a celebration lunch after
Mass.

ST PEREGRINE HEALING MASS
Rio Vista, CA
Debbie Nunes, OSSM
On August 30, 2014, six members
of the Mother of Sorrows Secular
Servite Community from
Union City, California, traveled
approximately 75 miles to assist
their Spiritual Assistant, Fr.
Richard Boyle, OSM, with the
frst ever Servite sponsored St.
Peregrine Healing Mass ofered in
the Sacramento Diocese. Earlier
this year, Fr. Rick was appointed
as the Pastoral Administrator of St.
Josephs parish in Rio Vista, a small
town that lies along the Sacramento
River. Te quaint, 100 year old
gothic style church, which holds
a little over 200 people, was flled
to capacity for the special Saturday
noon mass.
Te Secular Servites brought with
them three 1st class relics of St.
Peregrine that are in their custodial
care, as well as various St. Peregrine
prayer cards that were distributed.
Tey also assisted those who
wished to receive the Sacrament
of Anointing. Family members
and friends of those who were
being anointed were invited to
come up and join in the laying of
hands upon their loved ones. For
those who were by themselves, the
Secular Servite members would
step in so that all could experience
the feeling of being supported and
surrounded by a compassionate
touch. Tere were many others in
attendance who were there merely
to ofer their support and prayers.
Fr. Rick delivered an inspiring
homily in which he reminded us
that we can do nothing to earn our
salvation. Tat it is only through
Christ s sacrifce on the cross that
all are redeemed. However, we
are called to cooperate with that
salvation and we can do that by
uniting our sufering to his, which
in itself has redeeming value. So
instead of saying, why me as
many of us do when faced with a
challenging situation, we should
say, why not me.
Te atmosphere was charged with
the profound feeling of Gods grace
and healing presence, so much so
that many were moved to tears,
some of them becoming quite
overcome. Te whole experience
had the potential of a transforming
efect on all those present. At
the end of the mass, Fr. Rick
announced that he had come to
the decision that he would begin
ofering St. Peregrine masses at St.
Josephs every other month. One
got a sense of a collective nod of
approval from those assembled.
Te members of the Mother of
Sorrows Community were grateful
for the opportunity to be witnesses
of Servite compassion and service.
Tey left energized and with a
renewed commitment to the St.
Peregrine ministry at their home
parish of St. Annes.

St Juliana Falconieri Community
Ladysmith, WI
Jane & Linda Efertz, OSSM
On August 20, 2014, St. Juliana Community hosted Mary, Mother of Compassion Community, Spooner, WI. We
extended our initial greetings and then gathered in the Sisters Chapel, with several of the Servants of Mary, for
a service to commemorate Saint Philip Benizi. We began with our traditional song Hail Mary, followed by the
Greeting and then we sang a hymn in honor of Saint Philip Benizi. We read the Appeal for Peace from the 208th
General Chapter. We continued the service with a Prayer of Tanksgiving, where all present participated in the
response. Sr. Marguerite asked all to say the Servite Prayer for the Sick.
Te group gathered for a social hour and lunch. We had a wonderful lunch, with the groups dividing up and sitting
by someone they did not know. Te conversation fowed easily between the Secular Servites and Servite Sisters. It
was suggested that the Communities get together on an annual basis.
Sister Cecilia Fandel led a tour of the Sisters Residence and the Grounds. She explained the Stained Glass Window,
in the Chapel and where it came from. She also explained the articles and pictures within the Chapel. Te group
toured the rest of the residence and then convened to the grounds surrounding the residence. Some may remember
that these grounds are connected to the Mother House that was sold. Tere is a peace and calm that surrounds the
residence, also a beauty with the sloping landscape that ends at the Flambeau Rivers edge.
In honor of Saint Peregrine, a new Shrine was dedicated at our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Ladysmith on Tuesday,
August 27th 2014. Te dedication of the Shrine and veneration of the relic, along with a Healing Mass and anointing
of the sick with Peregrine oil, was celebrated by Father Chris Kemp, accompanied by Deacon Craig Voldberg. A
seven day candle will burn for those requesting prayer. Saint Peregrine oils, leafets, and prayer cards will also be
available by the shrine. Our Servants of Mary Sisters organized the event and the Secular Servites of Mary, Saint
Juliana Community, will maintain the Shrine. Te frst Mass of healing in honor of Saint Peregrine was held on
September 16, 2014, at Saint Josephs Catholic Church in Hayward. Father Philip Juza ofciated at the Mass. Our
Secular Servants of Mary, Saint Juliana Community, organized this special Mass. We pray that St Peregrine will
become an inspiration in our lives and a petitioner of needed graces from our loving Father to give us the strength to
cope with our burdens and illnesses. We pray also, this will continue to be a great devotional tradition in both areas.

mismo lote con responsabilidad y amor.
Estar en el mundo no como conformistas, pero
dentro de la historia, como extraos, caminando hacia
los dems.

Another Expression of Our Common
Vocation as Servants of Mary
Te Secular Institute Regnum Mariae, began in
Ancona, Italy in 1959 with young women belonging to
the Secular Order of the Servants of Mary.
Today it is present all over Italy, in Canada, in Spain, in
Mexico and in the Philippines.
We are lay consecrated women, living in the world
according to the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity
and obedience: a triad which leads men and women
to go beyond themselves, to be in the world, open to
dialogue in a welcoming and responsible attitude.
In todays history God calls us to be a fragment of his
covenant. You may be a fgure of relationship at the
service of the brothers and sisters!
To be in the world by loving it. By welcoming it the
way it is, without judging it, dialoguing with it, walking
together with it, in order to acknowledge, with joy and
thanksgiving, its positive aspects and to be attentive to
its needs and reasons.
To be in the world as evangelical salt, yeast and
light, without expecting any reward and without any
arrogance, like Mary.
To be in the world by sharing the same bread and the
same lot with responsibility and love.
To be in the world not as conformists, but inside
history, as strangers, walking toward the others.

A newly formed group of Servites located in Maplewood, MN, celebrated its First Anniversary on the Feast of the
Most Holy Trinity. Tis group, the Servite Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows, is a satellite of the Confraternity
at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago.
Its purpose, like all Servites, is to foster devotion to the Sorrows of Mary and to the Passion of her Son, Jesus. Unlike
the OSSMs, there is no formal formation process or Rule of Life, although members make a public commitment to
follow the requirements of the Confraternity and strive to develop the virtue of compassion so that they might be
with their sufering brothers and sisters through prayers and works of mercy.
Assisted by Sister Clarice Gierzak, OSM, members meet monthly to celebrate Feasts of Mary, Feasts of Servite
Saints, learn about the Order and pray the Seven Dolor Rosary.
Members of the Confraternity share in the prayers and works of Servites
throughout the world.
