Objectives

To introduce features of AutoCAD 2012 window
and methods of operating AutoCAD 2012
To illustrate the various commands and tools in the
drafting software
Course Outcome

The ability to identify and illustrate the various
commands and tools in the drawing software -CO1

The student should be able to :
Distinguish between Manual and Software drawing
(AutoCAD) application
Define geometric nomenclature Line, Angle,
Triangle, Polygon, Quadrilatera and circle
Apply tools, setting , and drawing commands.
Creating A3 drawing template
Draw line and coordinate entry by application of
relative coordinate, absolute coordinate and polar
coordinate

Course Learning
Outcome

The student should be able to (cont) :
Use simple command and shortcut to draw various
line types
Draw arc line and circle line in different method by
using different line tools
Apply ORTHO, OSNAPS, POLAR, SNAP and grid
functions for accurate construction drawing

Types of Drawing
Similarity: Both are type of drawings and create pictures
Differences:
Artistic drawings
purpose is to convey emotion or artistic sensitivity in some way
(subjective impression)
Anyone can appreciate the dwg. (even if each viewer has his own
unique appreciation)
Engineering drawings-
purpose is to convey objective fact information
Requires some training to understand
Has evolved into a language that is more precise and
unambiguous than natural languages programming language
Uses an extensive set of conventions to convey infor, mation very
precisel, with very little ambiguity.

Artistic vs. Engineering Drawings
Types of Engineering Drawing
Definition: A type of technical drawing which is used to
fully and clearly define requirements for engineered
items
Produces the documents of engineering drawings
More that just the drawing of pictures where it is also
a language a graphical language that communicates
ideas and information from one mind to another
It communicates all needed information from the
engineer who designed a part to the workers who will
make it
What is Engineering Drawing?
AutoCAD Definition
Definition: A software application for computer-aided
design (CAD) and drafting.
It supports both 2D and 3D formats
AutoCAD was derived from a 1977 program called
Interact CAD, which was written in a proprietary
language (SPL) by inventor Michael Riddle who later
co-founded Autodesk to market AutoCAD
Developed and sold by Autodesk, Inc and first released
in December 1982 (Autodesk founder John Walker)
The native file format of AutoCAD is dwg.
Used in a range of industries, employed by architects,
project managers and engineers

What is AutoCAD?
The Benefits of AutoCAD
AutoCAD is just using a computer instead of a pencil
and paper. But it so much more. And thats where it
gets interesting :

Quickly create designs

Improved quality over hand drafting

Can be customized to suit the individuals needs

Teaches a marketable skill

Geometric Nomenclature
Just before we start drawing, one more important
point. AutoCAD works on a co-ordinate system.
When drawing, we can be very precise and specify
an exact point in space where a line should begin or
end. The 2D co-ordinates system is based on the
horizontal and vertical axis named x and y. (This is
shown in the bottom left of the AutoCAD drawing
area, the X Y icon is called the UCS).

Points in space
Geometric Nomenclature
AutoCAD uses points to determine where an object is located.
There is an origin where it begins counting from. This point is
(0,0). Every object is located in relation to the origin. If you were to
draw a line straight out to the right from the origin, this would be
considered the positive X-axis. If you were to draw a line straight
up, this would be the positive Y-axis. If a picture shows a point
located at (9,6). This means that the point is 9 units over in the X-
axis and 6 units up in the Y-axis. When you are working with
points, X always comes first. If the other point shown is (-10,-4),
this means that the point is 10 units in the negative X-axis (left)
and 4 units in the negative Y-axis (down).
A line has two points, a start point and an end point. AutoCAD
works with the points to display the line on the screen.
