A good idea
A second class
train return ticket
fromEast Croydon
to Victoria Station
costs 10.80 or
8.90 off peak. Travelling is getting more and more expensive every
year. Sarah Jones, Labours candidate for Croydon Central and Steve
Reed MP for Croydon North have launched a joint campaign to switch
central Croydon train stations from zone 5 to zone 4 on the Transport
for London (TfL) map. The zone switch would cut fares for Croydon
commuters, and would make geographical sense, as the zone map
carves out Croydon for no good reason other than to make more
money. Other stations further out than Croydon are already in zone 4.
I signed the petition at http://www.zone4croydon.com/ because I
thought it made sense.
A day in London
I was blissfully unaware of the Whole Foods Market chain until I
discovered it in New York. Once back, I stumbled into the smallish
Clapham Junction Whole Foods Market where I was told to go to the
Kensington High Street shop in Barkers.
Barkers of Kensington was a department store in Kensington High
Street. It was started by John Barker and James
Whitehead in 1870, was sold to House of Fraser
in 1957 and was closed in 2006. I vaguely
remember Biba in the 70s when I first came to
London as a student.
The Whole Foods Market opened its first full-size
store there in June 2007, a total of 80,000 square

feet on three levels. It is a large and colourful shop but also very
commercial and incredibly expensive when compared to the American
ones. Moreover, there were lots of products that were not organic;
plenty of famous wines and champagnes were on sale; fruit and
vegetables, although looking very colourful, (see pages 10 and 11)
were odourless. In the Whole Foods Market, Bowery, New York each
type of fruit or vegetable smelled different, just as they should.
I did manage to get the teff flour (see page 22) I was looking for but
paid double the amount I would have paid for it had I ordered it online.
I doubt we will visit the shop again. The Values Matter Manifesto just
do not ring true and there is no magic. No Ayurvedic products either.
The restaurants were not inviting and, again, expensive. The toilets
were ghastly. Most of the staff were helpful.
Once in town, we decided to go
to different places. Parking is free
on Sundays, unlike in Croydon.
I realised that I had lost touch with
London where, in the last couple
of years, I have been rushing
around for meetings and nothing
else.
I finally noticed the artwork for the
Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square,
a bright blue cockerel symbolising
regeneration and strength for some. It
is a carbuncle to me and I am glad it is
on display only for 18 months and it
will be removed on 20 February 2015.
We then went to Mass in Westminster
Cathedral, a place I have always liked.
It was a Sung Mass in Latin. It was
beautiful and uplifting. It took me back
to my childhood.
We have now decided that we will start
taking days off on a regular basis and
walk around the capital to see what is
going on. We are definitely worth it.

Bins in Langland Gardens
Two bins appeared in Langland Gardens, perhaps
the most notorious road in Shirley for litter.
Residents (the majority does live in Shirley!) have a
strange fascination for buying their burgers and
chips from McDonalds, scoffing the lot in their
cars and throwing the packaging into this road.
The bins are not secured and seem to move
around. Was a risk assessment carried out?
Probably not from what I heard from the manager
of McDonalds restaurant in Wickham Road. He told me that a local
Residents Association had provided the bins because the Council
would not and McDonalds had agreed to empty them of their
McDonalds content. Quite an extraordinary waste of money because
the morons who litter will never place their rubbish
in the bins. Or perhaps I am woefully missing the
point. Perhaps there will be a string of volunteers
patrolling the road with their litter pickers and
putting the rubbish away.
It beggars belief that McDonalds may be blamed
for ASB perpetrated by residents. The same
residents who are trying to whip up support
against KFC moving into Wickham Road, Bromley.
As a vegetarian, I have never bought a meal from
either establishments.

I am an RC and fully support the work of Dignity in Dying to
change the law to allow assisted dying in this country. I want to be
able to take control over the decision I would make at the end of
my life if I found myself unable to do so. I would not want to travel
to Switzerland for assistance to die, unaccompanied, for fear of
legally implicating my loved ones, and perhaps before I was ready
to die, for fear that I might be physically unable to travel if I waited
any longer. Neither would I want to die on my own.
Some people object to assisted dying because they believe that all
human life is sacred and, as such, individuals should not be able to
decide about the timing of their death. I respect their belief but it is
important they understand that supporters of assisted dying are not
seeking to violate the principle of sanctity of life, but to uphold what lies
behind it: a respect for the dignity and irreplaceable value of each
human being. Accepting a dying individual's wish to die is not
devaluing human life, but an acceptance of the valuation they place
on a good end to their life, and their wish not to suffer unbearably at
the end of life.
Some think that if assisted dying were legalised, public attitudes and
the general perception of the value of the lives of disabled and dying
people would inevitably be affected. However, research shows that no
such changes happen in those countries that have legalised assistance
to die.
Assisted dying, far from devaluing the lives of disabled and dying
people, shifts the power to make a major decision which impacts on
an individuals life and death, into the hands of that person and away
LETS TALK

DIGNITY IN DYING

from health and social care professionals. Patients at the end of life
would be empowered in a society which is willing to respect the wishes
of its citizens when they make informed choices.
Dignity in Dying strives to ensure that everyone has what they deem
to be a dignified death, and all of us who have witnessed the death of
a family member or a friend know that dignity for them would only have
been achieved through safeguarded assisted dying. I could do nothing
for my father.
People should be aware of the choices available:
Assisted dying (permitted in the US states of Oregon and
Washington) sometimes referred to as physician-assisted dying,
applies only to terminally ill, mentally competent adults and allows
the dying patient, after meeting strict legal safeguards, to self-
administer life-ending medication.
Assisted suicide (permitted in Switzerland) allows assistance to die
for chronically ill and disabled people, along with terminally ill people.
Euthanasia is a term often used to refer to the administration of life-
ending medication by a third party.
Voluntary euthanasia (permitted in the Netherlands and Belgium)
allows a doctor to administer the medication directly to a requesting
patient.
Non-voluntary euthanasia describes a situation where a third-party
(usually a doctor) administers life-ending medication without the
consent of the patient.
Both voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia are illegal in the UK,
although evidence shows that both do occur.
The assisted dying legislation Dignity in Dying propose is similar to
that in place in Oregon and Washington and would give terminally ill
adults choice and control over the timing and manner of their death.
Dignity in Dying does not campaign for a change in the law or allow
assistance to die for people who are not terminally ill.
Without the option of assisted dying, some terminally ill adults who are
worried about their death and suffering unbearably, choose to try to
take control by travelling to the Swiss assisted suicide organisation
16
Dignitas, or by refusing food and water, or attempting suicide with or
without the help of loved ones. Others may receive help from a doctor
to die. But this will all be done outside of the framework of law and
without a transparent process to check for abuse. It is clear that the
status quo is unsatisfactory. Legalising assisted dying would ensure
the practice was regulated and so offer terminally ill people greater
protection than the current system.

Withania Somnifera
Withania somnifera, known
commonly as ashwagandha,
Indian ginseng, poison goose -
berry, or winter cherry, is a plant
in the Solanaceae or nightshade
family. Several other species in
the genus Withania are morpho -
logically similar.
Ashwagandha, an exotic Indian herb, has remarkable stress-relieving
properties comparable to those of powerful drugs used to treat
depression and anxiety. In addition to its excellent protective effects
on the nervous system, ashwagandha may be a promising alternative
treatment for a variety of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers
and Parkinsons. Ashwagandha has powerful antioxidant properties
that seek and destroy the free radicals that have been implicated in
aging and numerous disease states. Even more remarkable, emerging
evidence suggests that ashwagandha has anti-cancer benefits as well.
A perennial plant, Withania somnifera is branchy and herbaceous and
can grow up to more than a meter in height; it may, on occasion, reach
a height of up to several meters. However, on average, it remains a
compact bush. It has small, alternate, oval-shaped leaves and tiny
flowers with light green calyxes and white pistils. The flowers bloom
near the upper levels of the branch, close to the core stem. The red
berry fruits, known appropriately in ancient Assyrian as harhumbashir,
or red coral, are encased by an inflated calyx that resemble a small
lantern. The fruits contain tiny
seeds which are orange-yellow in
color and round and flat in shape.
The remains of several Egyptian
flower garlands that contain
ashwagandha have been found
in El Faiym, and date back to
late antiquity. The plant is
originally from North Africa and is
18
commonly found throughout Iraq, Pakistan and northern India. One
can trace the plants history in Europe back to the sixteenth century, for
ashwangandha is described and pictured in most of the herbal writings
of the fathers of botany. It is, to this day, a very popular ornamental
plant in China.
Propagation of Withania somnifera is achieved by way of the seeds,
which are best pre-germinated before planting. Water well at first, then
taper off to watering in moderation. Ashwangandha does not tolerate
any frost, and therefore in colder climates it must be kept indoors in a
container during the winter. As a houseplant it thrives, and may
blossom several times a year.
Traditional Uses
Withania somnifera, known in the Assyrian language as ashwagandha,
is suspected to have been widely used in ancient Mesopotamia for its
medicinal and narcotic properties. A member of the Nightshade family,
the plant was well known in ancient Egypt, and characterized and
classified as a sakrn intoxicant in Old Arabic. It was widely speculated
that Withania somnifera was the fabled and mysterious halacacabon,
or Salt Jar, as well as the legendary, mythical psychoactive plant
known as trychnos or strychnos, that which provokes sleep, of the
Greeks.
Numerous claims tout Withania somnifera as a twin to the wondrous
root jangida, whose praises were sung in the Vedic medical system
especially in the Arthava Veda as having strong powers as a
panacea, amulet, magical agent, and aphrodisiac. Sushruta, the Indian
physician and co-founder of the Ayurvedic system, hailed the root as
rasayana, an alchemical elixir, and as a vajikarana, an aphrodisiac,
sometimes used in combination with Cannabis sativa. For this reason,
ashwangandha was employed in sexual magic and Tantric rituals as an
aid in sustaining the vital duration of erections. Folk healers known as
vaidyas still prepare a love potion from the root. Its
effects are said to attract the opposite sex and make one
ready for love. It is mentioned frequently in the Atharva
Veda, and is considered second in importance to soma.
The fruits are used to coagulate milk when rennet cannot
be used in rituals and ceremonies for religious reasons.
19
20
The ancient Arabs used the root as a narcotic, a health tonic, and an
aphrodisiac. In Pakistan, the leaves of the closely related Withania
coagluans were presumably smoked as a means to become
intoxicated. The root has been used historically as a substitute for
mandrake (Mandragora officarum), as well.
Traditional preparation
The psychoactive parts of the plant are the root and the aboveground
herbage. To make a preparation from the root, it is dried, then left
whole or ground into a powder. The powder may be poured into gelatin
capsules and ingested. A tonic or sedative tea can be made by boiling
the root cortex for a few minutes. The root powder may be boiled in
milk together with honey and pippali.
In Ayurvedic medicine, a single dosage consists of 250mg to one gram
of the powdered root. Definite, pronounced effects occur at dosages
of 100mg of root powder per kilogram of body weight. Tonic effects are
achieved by chewing a piece of root the length of half a finger, each
and every day. The root has a pleasant taste slightly reminiscent of
licorice.
Medicinal uses
The liquid extract of the root has anti-stress effects similar to those of
ginseng. The antiserotinergic activity results in the stimulation of
appetite. An alcohol extract of the above ground herbage has quite
potent anti-inflammatory properties, primarily as a result of the steroids
that are present in the plant, especially Withaferin A. No toxic side
effects have reported to date, even when the plant is used during
pregnancy.
The Assyrians used the root as a fumigant, blowing the incense smoke
onto inflamed teeth. This use is similar to the ways in which the
Assyrians used black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger). In modern-day
Yemen, ashwangandha root is still used to treat toothaches. Folk
medicine uses a paste created from grinding ashwangandha leaves
to a pulp. On occasion the fruits will also be added into this pulpy
mixture. The salve is then applied topically and massaged into the skin
to treat open wounds, swelling, rheumatism, and external
inflammation.
http://entheology.com/plants/withania-somnifera-ashwagandha/
In Africa, the root is given to children as a tranquilizer, and to soothe
teething pain. In India, the herbage is smoked to soothe coughing and
asthma. A section of Pakistan employs the root cortex as a powder,
then mixes it with water. This mixture is then kneaded into a paste
which is used to treat, disinfect and heal wounds. In Ethiopia, crushed
Withania somnifera leaves are smeared onto arthritic joints.
Traditional effects
Ashwagandha is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat a number of
ailments. It is said to be good for women who are having trouble in
pregnancy, to regenerate the hormonal system, to promote healing,
and can also be used topically on sores or wounds. The Ayurvedic
system regards it as sattvi in quality, a rejuvenative herb that is good
for the mind, which it nurtures and clarifies. It also produces a calming
effect and allows for deep, dreamless sleep. Some reports indicate
that it may act as a sedative, a euphoriant, or an aphrodisiac .
The plant acts as an immune stimulant, hypnotic, tranquilizer,
sedative, narcotic, analgesic, hypotensive, respiratory stimulant,
vasomotor stimulant, appetite stimulant, astringent, brachycardiac,
antirheumatic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, antiparasitic, and anti-
stress agent.
Powerful protective effects on the nervous system
Stress, environmental toxins, and poor nutrition all have a detrimental
impact on our nervous systems.
Scientific studies support ashwagandhas ability not only to relieve
stress, but also to protect brain cells against the deleterious effects of
our modern lifestyles.
For example, in validated models of anxiety and depression,
ashwagandha has been demonstrated to be as effective as some
tranquilizers and antidepressant drugs. Specifically, oral administration
of ashwagandha for five days suggested anxiety-relieving effects
similar to those achieved by the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam (Ativan),
and antidepressant effects similar to those of the prescription
antidepressant drug imipramine (Tofranil).

Teff, the gluten-free ancient Ethiopian grain
The ever-vigilant Jill Latter had heard about teff on the radio and
promptly told me. I knew nothing about it and went searching. I
now love this grain which is also available on prescription for
coeliacs and diabetics.
Teff is the smallest grain in the world, grown primarily in the central
highlands of Ethiopia and used to make the flat bread, injera, that
accompanies every Ethiopian meal. Teff is also widely used as animal
fodder while its straw is used to re-enforce thatched roofs and mud
bricks.
Although, as Ethiopian communities grow around the world, the
requirement for teff is also growing, its preference for equatorial light
conditions (a maximum of 12 hours daylight) causes problems in the
northern hemisphere with our long summer hours of daylight. However,
teffs nutritional profile and the fact that it is naturally gluten free make
it a very appealing grain. A good deal of work is being done both in the
American midwest and in Holland to adapt it to the longer daylight
hours.
Nutritional virtues
Teff grains are tiny - you can hold enough seeds in one hand to sow
an entire field - which made it ideal for the semi-nomadic lifestyle of the
early Ethiopians. Because it is so small the grain cannot be separated,
as wheat can, into germ, bran and endosperm so teff retains a very
high fibre content - great for high-fibre diets and for blood sugar
control. Hence its appeal for diabetics.
Teff has very much higher levels of calcium (167g/100g) than wheat
(34g/100g) so will appeal to those on dairy-free diets. It also has
significantly higher levels of a range of other nutrients - iron
(5.7mg/100g versus 3.9), magnesium (194mg versus 138), zinc
(4.6mg versus 2.9), Vitamin B3/niacin (16mg versus 0.8), Vitamin C
(70mg versus 0.25) - and low levels of phytic acid making the minerals
more bio-available than in any other grains.
Moreover, teff contains the full range of eight amino acids essential for
humans, so is excellent for vegetarians. When teff is used to make
Ethiopian flat bread, a short fermentation process allows the yeast to
generate yet more vitamins.

25
Teff is naturally gluten free so is the ideal grain for anyone on a wheat
or gluten-free diet.
Cookability
Because you are using the whole grain, teff flour (which comes as
white, brown and red) is slightly coarse and grainy. Lucy Seffen of
Roleys, the first company to market baked products made with teff
flour reckons that it works better if combined with another gluten-free
flour. We combined it with potato flour in this cake recipe, which
worked very well. These biscuits, which we made with pure brown teff,
were fine but definitely grainier and more unusual.
Bread made with the white teff was in fact dark brown, quite solid and
very nutty but not at all unpleasant. Roleys are working on a teff-based
bread-mix which will probably produce a lighter, more conventional
bread.
Availability
Teff is grown both in Australia and in the mid-west of the USA but until
recently has not been cultivated in Europe. However, a Dutch firm are
now growing it organically as eragrain. The resulting teff is available
at Innovative Solutions.
Injera
The national bread of Ethiopia is called injera and is actually a huge
fermented pancake which is spread out on the table and onto which
other foods are placed. The diners pull off pieces of the injera and use
it to roll up the other foods - like a massive cigarette - which they then
eat with their fingers.
The proportions for injera are roughly 2.5 times the amount of water to
flour. Mix them together in a bowl, cover with a towel and leave at room
temperature for up to three days - or until the mixture bubbles and
turns sour. This can happen overnight.
Season with salt then heat a little oil in a large pan and pour in enough
mixture to make a medium thick pancake. Cook briefly, until holes form
in the injera and the edges lift from the pan. Do not let it brown, and
do not flip it over as it is only supposed to be cooked on one side.
Remove the pancake and let cool. Layer the pancakes with
greaseproof paper to prevent them sticking.

PROFIT BEFORE SERVICE
Many residents in Shirley did not appear to express a great deal of
concern when they received a circular letter from Royal Mail telling
them that the East Croydon Parcel Collection Office would be
relocating to the new delivery office at Wandle Park Trading Estate,
Factory Lane, CR0 3RL on Monday 24 March.
Royal Mail said that it had to make changes due to the growth of
electronic communications, the need to modernise the way they
operate and to improve their efficiency.
The fact is that Royal Mail wanted to redevelop their East Croydon site
for a housing development, which will afforded them a huge profit.
They did not take into consideration that thousands of Croydon
residents have to go to Factory Lane, an area with notoriously poor
public transport links. Royal Mail seems to think that all residents have
cars but many in Shirley do not drive.
Royal Mail claims that you can ask for parcels to be redelivered free of
charge to your address, a neighbours address or a local Post Office
branch (small fee*). In order to know the fee you must *Visit
royalmail.com/redelivery for a full list of ID and prices. If you do not
have access to internet, you can spend quite a long time on the phone
before you can book your redelivery. Good luck.
27
Either way, collecting a parcel is now more complicated and time-
consuming for many residents. Moreover, travelling by car costs
money, increases pollution and congestion with thousands of car trips
each year to Factory Lane.
Why was East Croydon Parcel Collection Office not moved to the
Town Centre, in one of the many empty buildings? Why was it
relocated in a trading estate that most people cannot easily reach?
If you do not have a car or a bike (given that you feel confident enough
to cycle to Factory Lane!) and need to use public transport, please
see the itineraries below. It is just ridiculous!
We had three parcels in a week: one was delivered to our neighbour
but we had to go an retrieve the other two. Even if we went by car, the
return trip took best part of an hour.
The delivery office is a dismal place with very little place for parking, at
least when we went in the evening because the Royal Mail vans were
all parked in the customers bays. Lots of people were queuing with
a resigned expression on their faces.
I am not happy. Are you?

Pest Control
Finding that your flat is plagued with Pharaoh Ants and rats at the same
time is not a good thing. Calling a reputable pest control firm and being
charged hundreds of pounds for invisible, i.e. not carried out, treatment is
even worse. I was at the end of her tether because these very small ants
(about 2mm) were crawling everywhere. I had tried many sprays and
powders but nothing worked against these small monsters. Paul Davies of
Stop Bugging Me Pest Control was recommended and he got rid of the
invasion in a very short time.
Soon after that rats droppings were found and there was a smell in the flat
so pungent that one could have thought that there was a decomposing body
somewhere. Perhaps there was, under the floor boards.
Mr. Davies visited again and found holes under the bath. He cleared the
bathroom, filled the holes and treated the place. The stench disappeared
and peace was restored. I highly recommend him. G L

WHAT S A 'SMART' METER?
'Smart' Meters monitor, measure and communicate customers'
private electricity, gas and water usage data to utility providers. They
operate in a wireIess 'mesh' network with your neighbours' 'Smart'
Meters and transmit intense bursts of non-ionising, microwave
radiation, 24 hrs/day. This radiation (also known as RF EMF) is the
same kind emitted by mobile phone masts. More than 5,000 studies
show RF EMF radiation is harmfuI to humans, pIants and animaIs.
Some time soon, your utility provider(s) will request access to your home to install one or
more 'Smart' Meters that will measure (and in future controI) your use of gas, electricity &
water. The promise is a greener environment and cost savings - the reality is the opposite.

STOP AND SEARCH

MONITORING
GROUP
CMGs are local scrutiny bodies that will instigate changes.
Police are reducing the amount of stop and searches they are doing.
However, the decrease in numbers of stop and searches is not
sufficient to change the perceptions of the public who believe that
police employs incorrect tactics that have a negative impact on people.
Croydon CMG has a Chair, a Vice-Chair and 5 members who
represent different communities in Croydon. We meet every six weeks
and go through the Croydon Stop and Searches with the Police. Our
Police Lead wrote: Errors identified in the redacted forms for August
are being addressed with individuals and their supervisors. Although
we would like to see 100% compliance, for me the fact that errors were
identified demonstrates that the process of checking via this forum
works, seeking improvement and yes professionalism.
Our findings, alongside those of the other London CMGs, will be fed
through the Croydon Safer Neighbourhood Board and the Community
Monitoring Network.
We have a real opportunity to make a difference and speed up
the process of reform.
We need to hear from anybody who may have a grievance.
No changes will be made if you remain silent.

who are paid to give full time attention to duties
which are incumbent on every citizen in the
interests of community welfare and existence.

Shirley Slimming World Group Relaunch
We are still at the same site - Orchard Way Primary School - and still on a Wednesday
at 7.30pm.
We have had a temporary consultant covering the group meeting for the last couple of
months but she comes from the other side of Croydon and has been handling it in addition
to her own work so I have now been recruited to cover the group permanently. My re-
launch night is Wednesday 5 November. We are going to have some fun that night and
I have lined up a number of really good raffle prizes including vouchers to have your hair
done at local hairdressers and beauty treatments from salons in the area. There are
also some good offers at the moment including the one where if five new members join
together, they will receive their first week free and just pay the initial joining fee on
registration.
Like all the other consultants I have been through the Slimming World experience myself
and I've lost over three and a half stone in weight. I have been to Slimming World Head
Office to undergo very thorough training and the organisation invests heavily in
consultant development. GPs often refer patients with weight issues to Slimming World
and we are the only slimming organisation to be recognised by the Royal College of
Midwives - a pretty good recommendation as standards are high from health professionals.
There is also another Slimming World Group in Shirley that meets on a Tuesday morning.
The consultant is just changing at the moment but it will still be running.
The full details of both Shirley meetings are as follows:
Tuesday mornings at 9.30am at Shirley Methodist Church Hall, Eldon Avenue, Shirley,
Croydon CR0 8SD
and
Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm at Orchard Way Primary School, Orchard Way,
Shirley, Croydon CR0 7NJ

About Suzy
What made you wish to lose weight?
I originally decided I wanted to lose weight
after I saw a school reunion photo (I'm an old
Coloma girl). The photo was circulated by
email to all who had attended the occasion
and I realised just how much weight I had put
on. Additionally, there were health reasons. My
blood pressure had begun to creep up and I
just knew I had to take action.
How long did it take you to reach your target weight?
I started with Slimming World at the beginning of May this year. I have
followed the plan 100% and I have now
lost over three and a half stone. I still
have about half a stone to go to reach
target but I know that will be achieved
before Christmas.
How has you life changed after you
lost weight?
Life has changed dramatically as I feel so
much fitter. I go swimming most
mornings and I enjoy ballroom dancing.
It's also been a great excuse for buying
new clothes!

Time to check facts
A lot of misconceptions (13, to be
exact) were confronted here with
some solid facts.
How solid?
Below is what the fact-checkers
from www.upworthy.com found:
CLAIM: Global warming wasn't happening so they changed the name to
climate change.
FACT: "Global warming" is technically correct; however, "climate change"
indicates the wide range of problems (stronger storms, rising sea levels,
ocean acidification, etc.) our planet is facing.
CLAIM: The globe isn't warming.
FACT: 13 of the 14 hottest years occurred this century. And the trend is
even more clear when satellite data is included.
CLAIM: In the past, scientists said the earth was cooling.
FACT: Some scientists in the 1970s predicted cooling, but six times as
many papers during the same period said it was warming.
CLAIM: The earth is cooling.
FACT: It's not just temperature that shows the warming. Sea levels are
rising 3 mm a year, which indicates oceans are warming and, therefore,
expanding. Also, Arctic sea ice is melting at unprecedented rates.
CLAIM: Arctic sea ice is increasing.
FACT: Look at the bigger data set, not just the latest little uptick, and
you'll see the overall trend is downward.
CLAIM: The sun is responsible for warming.
FACT: The sun was getting brighter in the 1930s, but since the 1950s, the
sun has been getting dimmer and yet, temperatures continue to rise.
CLAIM: Humans emit only a tiny fraction of CO2.
FACT: That's true 30 gigatons from human activity vs. 780 gigatons
from natural processes. But the earth isn't in balance like it used to be,
and current CO2 emissions are outpacing the balance. We know the

increase is man-made because the isotope carbon 13, which is less
common in fossil fuels, is dissipating in the atmosphere. In other words,
we're seeing more CO2 in the atmosphere, and it's got the molecular
signature of fossil fuels.
CLAIM: Volcanoes emit way more CO2 than humans.
FACT: Volcanoes emit about 0.25 gigaton, less than 1% of what humans
emit.
CLAIM: Water is by far the most potent greenhouse gas.
FACT: Yes! But water in the atmosphere is increasing because the air is
warmer. It's still a CO2 problem that creates a positive feedback loop.
More CO2, more warming, more water, still more warming, and on and
on...
CLAIM: Predictions have failed.
FACT: Most predictions actually agree with observations. A model from
1988 did disagree, but that's when we thought climate sensitivity was
higher. If you rerun the model with 3 degrees of warming for every
doubling of CO2, the predictions are right on.
CLAIM: The earth has warmed and cooled in the past.
FACT: Past changes were due to tilt, precession of tilt, and orbit of the
earth the Milankovitch cycles.
CLAIM: CO2 lags behind the temp rise.
FACT: 90% of temperature increases start after CO2 rises.
CLAIM: Global warming isn't that bad.
FACT: It means more intense weather, acidic oceans, and rising sea
levels, along with a bunch of other terrible stuff. We'd be much better off
just reducing carbon now, rather than paying the price later.
Even if we believe that the climate has always changed and that,
geologically, planet earth's climate is always on the go, thanks to plate
tectonics, volcanic eruptions, and a wobbly orbit around the sun, we
cannot deny that we are going through an unsettling period with
extreme weathers. The changes being seen now are not comparable
to those seen in the past: they are faster than any previous
temperature changes we see in the geological record. And speed kills.
The rate of change may be too much for much of the life on the planet
to adapt to and survive. It is time to check facts.

Keeping Yourself and Your Home Clean, Safely
I strongly encourage you to think about ditching all of your chemical
disinfectants, including your antibacterial soaps, laundry detergents and bath
and kitchen cleansers, in favor of more natural alternatives.
Remember, no study has shown that a vigorous program of home
disinfection leads to a reduction of illness in a family. Yet, studies have shown
that disinfectants can cause you and your family harm.
For those times when you need to do a bit of cleansing, one of the best non-
toxic disinfectants is simple soap and water. You can use this for washing
your hands, your body, and for other household cleansing.
The most effective hand-washing technique involves three steps:
Use warm water
Work up a good lather all the way up to your wrists for
at least 10 or 15 seconds
Don't forget to get all surfaces including the backs of
your hands, wrists, between your fingers and an area
often overlooked, your fingernails
An all-purpose cleanser that works great for kitchen counters, cutting boards
and bathrooms is 3% hydrogen peroxide and vinegar.
Simply put each liquid into a separate spray bottle, then spray the surface
with one, followed by the other.
In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing the
two mists killed virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, and E. coli bacteria on heavily
contaminated food and surfaces when used in this fashion, making this spray
combination more effective at killing these potentially lethal bacteria than
chlorine bleach or any commercially available kitchen cleaner.
The best results came from using one mist right after the other - it is 10 times
more effective than using either spray by itself and more effective than mixing
the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in one sprayer.
Sunlight is another powerful disinfectant, and drying your laundry in the sun
is one of the best ways to save energy and wind up with fresh, clean linens
and clothing.
Theres really no need to expose your family to dangerous chemical
disinfectants. As an added bonus aside from the health benefits, using this
type of natural homemade cleanser is much less expensive than commercial
varieties.

Do they know what they are doing?
The sign appeared out of the blue
without any explanation of sort. The
meaning was unclear and the sign did
not seem to conform to the Road
Traffic Act 1988. Neither was any
notice to be found on Croydon Council
website.
On 19 October I asked one of the
Shirley Ward councillors for an
explanation and Mike Fisher
answered: I am not aware of what is
going on here. I have asked for an
explanation and when I have it, I will let
you know. My hard working
representative forwarded my email to
the Executive Director, Development
and Environment, London Borough of
Croydon and is still waiting for a reply
at 30 October 2014.
Early morning on 21 October 2014
and with great fracas, a young man in
a white van appeared and positioned 2
signs and 3 traffic cones leaving the
original sign in place. I asked him what
was going on. He was very polite and
answered that there would be gas
works in Stuart Crescent. It is worth
noting that there are only garages in
this stretch of Stuart Crescent and no
gas works are scheduled. It is just
ridiculous and nobody takes any
notice of the signs, anyway.
The day after the erection, the signs
were blown away by strong winds.
Fortunately, there was no damage to
people or cars.
Only one no access sign was returned.
44

The original sign remained in situ.
However, a big Diversion sign was
positioned on the pavement at the
intersection of Stuart Crescent and
Palace View. Not the best choice nor
the safest. In strong winds it might
blow on elderly residents trying to
post a letter in the nearby pillar box or
against parked cars. In the latter
case, we have plenty of photographic
evidence to sue whoever put it there. A second sign was placed in Stuart
Crescent. I am not sure why it indicates a diversion to the right. Do they
know what they are doing? I doubt it.

What does Christmas mean to you?
To some it is a commemoration of the birth of Christ, to many an
occasion to eat and drink to excess; to almost all it is an
opportunity to reach out to family and friends, to wish them the
Joys of Christmas and our best wishes for the Coming Year. For
those we seldom see or have especially close ties with we update
them on the years happenings and, where possible, enclose
pictures of where we have been or, more importantly, family
pictures of how the children have grown, their involvement in sport
or music, or family gatherings or portraits - all to be treasured by
the recipient. These can be enhanced by including them as part
of a personalised Christmas card.
Picture Partnership can help you in several ways this Christmas
but hurry! We can take an individual, a family or a group photo
and have these incorporated in your own personal choice of card
and with your own personal greeting.
For businesses, a speciality of Picture
Partnership is to produce, in close
collaboration with you, company branded
Christmas cards that help promote your
business by incorporating photos of your
teams or groups, your products or logo and
your style all integrated in one card that
says your business. This can be done with
a formal business approach or in a fun and
creative style, whatever best reflects your
business. We do this for ourselves each year,
49
here at Picture Partnership and its always an entertaining team
building exercise, bringing the team together!
Interested? Why not give us a call and see what we can do for
you? Individuals and businesses are equally welcome.
Our family Christmas card packages start from just 35.00 which
includes the shoot and 1 pack of 10 A6 cards (more can be

READING
GROUP
FOR ADULTS
The group will discuss The Casual Vacancy by J K Rowling
on Thursday 13 November from 6 to 7pm.
The novel is set in a suburban West Country town called Pagford and begins with the
death of beloved Parish Councillor Barry Fairbrother. Subsequently, a seat on the council
is vacant and a conflict ensues before the election for his successor takes place.
Factions develop, particularly concerning whether to dissociate with a local council
estate, the Fields, with which Barry supported an alliance. However, those running
for a place soon find their darkest secrets revealed on the Parish Council online forum,
ruining their campaign and leaving the election in turmoil.
Major themes in the novel are class, politics, and social issues such as drugs,
prostitution and rape. The novel was the fastest-selling in the United Kingdom in three
years. It became the 15
th
best-selling book of 2012 during its first week of release.
The book also set a Goodreads record for the all-time biggest started reading day,
later winning the Best Fiction category in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2012.

Dear Chief Executive of Utility/Energy Provider as well as agents, officers, employees, contractors, selected
representatives of Parliament, the Health Protection Agency and other interested parties:
Be advised, that you and all other parties are hereby denied consent for installation and use of any and all Smart Meters
or any other surveillance and activity monitoring device, or devices, at my property and/or place of residence as noted
herein.
Installation and use of any surveillance and activity monitoring device that sends and receives communications
technology is hereby refused and prohibited. Consent is legally required for installation of any surveillance device and
any device that will collect and transmit private and personal data to undisclosed and unauthorised parties for
undisclosed and unauthorised purposes. Authorisation for sharing of personal and private information may only be given
by the originator and subject of that information. That authorisation is hereby denied and refused with regard to the
advised property and all its occupants.
Smart Meters violate many of my human rights, such as those laid out by the European Convention on Human Rights
under Article 1 of the First Protocol, Article 2 (right to life), Article 3 (prohibition of torture/degrading treatment), Article 5
(right to liberty and security), Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life) and Article 12 (right to marry and to
found a family).
Smart Meters cause endangerment to residents through many factors and my reasons for denying consent for
installation include:
1. Wireless Smart Meters, when activated, emit intense, pulsed bursts of non-ionising, RF microwave radiation. More
than 5,000 studies have shown that non-ionising microwave radiation/RF EMF is harmful to humans, animals and
plants.
2. On 31st May 2011, the World Health Organisations International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorised
RF EMFs as a possible CARCINOGEN (Class 2b) the same as lead, DDT, chloroform & methylmercury.
3. On 6th May 2011, the Council of Europe issued a report titled Potential dangers of EMFs and their effect on the
environment in which they called for an IMMEDIATE reduction in exposure to EMFs by children. The Council
advocates a precautionary principle be applied to wireless emissions to prevent public health disaster akin to
tobacco, leaded petrol and asbestos. Smart Meters will increase not decrease the EMF exposure to members of
a household and their neighbours.
4. As demonstrated by Daniel Hirsch, Senior Nuclear Policy Lecturer at UCSC, Smart Meters can expose the body to
160x to 800x times as much microwave radiation as mobile phones. Smart Meters can emit intense pulses of
radiation in excess of 190,000 times every day.
5. Human, animal and cell culture studies indicate long-term systemic health effects from RF microwave radiation,
including hormone disruption, DNA damage, leakage of blood-brain- barrier, sperm count reduction & damage, sleep
disorders, learning difficulties, attention deficit & hyperactivity disorders, dementia and cancer including leukemia and
brain glioma (tumours). There is concern that pregnant women & children are particularly vulnerable.
6. The ICNIRP safety standards which the UK Government and HPA continue to use fail to recognise the non-thermal,
biological effects of microwave radiation. These standards were voted obsolete by the European Parliament, 522 to
16 votes yet still remain in use in the UK.
7. As highlighted by Dr. David Carpenter (Director of the Institute of Health and Environment University of Albany
and former head of the New York Department of Public Health), there is evidence that exposure to RF radiation
increases the risk of cancer, increases damage to the nervous system, causes electro-sensitivity, has adverse
reproductive effects and a variety of other effects on different organ systems. He has stated on record that there is no
justification for the statement that Smart Meters have no adverse health effects.
8. European surveys have shown at least 1 in 20 people are moderately or severely sensitive to RF EMF radiation,
experiencing a broad range of debilitating symptoms. The number of sufferers is rising rapidly. This is problematic and
in some cases life-changing for sufferers, and will place further pressure on the National Health Service as well as
impacting business productivity.
9. In January 2011, the American Association of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has called for the complete removal of
Smart Meters and a return to safe analogue due to scientific and medical studies repeatedly showing health risks
from exposure to microwaves emitted from wireless devices.
10. In March 2012, Dr Andrew Goldsworthys research warned that Water Smart Meters, via their strong RF microwave
emissions, can severely reduce water quality, leading to increased toxicity of poisons present in the body. This is
particularly concerning for areas like London where there are still lead pipes in use electromagnetically-conditioned
water flow can strip lead from pipes, leading to an increase in toxin intake into the body and the food-chain.
11. Smart Meters monitor household activity and occupancy in violation of my rights to privacy and domestic security.

12. Smart Meters identify individual electrical devices inside the home and record when they are operated causing
invasion of privacy.
13. They transmit wireless signals which may be intercepted by unauthorized and unknown parties. Those signals can be
used to monitor behavior and occupancy and they can be used by criminals to aid criminal activity against the
occupants.
14. Data about occupants daily habits and activities are collected, recorded and stored in permanent databases which
are accessed by parties not authorized or invited to know and share that private data by those whose activities were
recorded.
15. Those with access to the Smart Meter databases can review a permanent history of household activities complete
with calendar and time-of-day metrics to gain a highly invasive and detailed view of the lives of the occupants.
16. Those databases may be shared with, or fall into the hands of criminals, blackmailers, corrupt law enforcement,
private hackers of wireless transmissions, power company employees, and other unidentified parties who may act
against the interests of the occupants under metered surveillance.
17. It may be possible with analysis of certain Smart Meter data for unauthorized and distant parties to determine
medical conditions, sexual activities, and physical locations of persons within the home, vacancy patterns and
personal information and habits of the occupants.
18. Energy/utility companies and Government agencies do not have the lawful right to monitor, manage and control my
utility usage. Profiling and monitoring of my energy and utility usage is a gross invasion of privacy and will be
susceptible to misuse in the wrong hands.
19. A one year study in Toronto, Canada, showed the energy/utility bills have gone up in 80% of cases, many by more
than 50%.
20. The UK Government has said Smart Meters will cost more than 11billion for estimated savings of just 25 per
home/year and that saving will only possible if customers have at least two Smart Meters and succeed in changing
their own behaviour to create the savings. Not only will there be a need for this 11billion to be clawed back, in part,
through my energy/utility bills, but many new Smart Meters only have a 10 year lifespan before requiring replacement
which is a shorter lifespan than current analogue meters. They will potentially require more regular servicing too.
21. Wireless transmissions of my personal energy usage, with information about the devices I use, when I use them and
what I am doing with them at any given moment, will be available to your organisation and any potential hackers.
22. Smart meters can be hacked, have been hacked and will continue to be hacked. By deploying millions of Smart
Meters with the same software, firmware and hardware, they become a highly-concentrated, strategic target for any
malicious hackers and will endanger the community if an attacker, for example, can switch the power on and off from
remote en masse. This makes Smart Meters dangerous and a liability to the bill-payers who would have to ultimately
pay for any damage through higher bills. The FBI has warned that Smart Meters hacking real and is likely to spread.
23. Ethical hackers in Germany have shown how easy it is to unlawfully access data from Smart Meters and to remotely
control them. This is a risk to me, my family and our entire energy grid. Former CIA Director James Woolsey has
called Smart Grid a really, really stupid idea.
24. In a wireless Smart Grid, my entire home will become a node on the Internet. This means my home and device
usage will suddenly become available to hackers, who can use the data to analyse when certain people are at home,
e.g. young children.
25. In the US, this data has been sold by energy companies to 3rd parties, e.g. police, corporate marketing departments
and insurance companies. Smart Meters represent pieces of invasive surveillance equipment within my home. I may
have nothing to hide but I believe that I have the right to defend my privacy and my right to decide how I use my
utilities which you provide to me as a service.
26. Smart Meters will make it far easier to disconnect customers remotely a particular concern in light of the hacking
threats, especially to Smart Water Meters.
27. In North America, Smart Meters have been shown to explode, cause fires, and can interfere with sensitive electrical
devices such as heart pacemakers.
28. Smart meters are not protected from EMP attacks, large EMP or localized EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulses).
29. Disabling the receiver will not prevent other forms of hacks. For example, a malicious attacker could confuse the
internal CPU, reset it, change random memory locations, change the KWH reading, force a power disconnect, or
completely disable a Smart Meter with a simple coil of wire and a small battery. This cant happen with a mechanical
meter. It is well known that a wide EMP can take out car computers; Smart Meters will make that possible on the city
wide electric infrastructure.

30. A thief or burglar could the same EMP or hacking methods to turn off the house power even if the electrical switch
box is locked.
31. Scientists have widely refuted claims that Smart Meters are green. There is a significant (and growing) body of
work showing Smart Meters actually harm nature and our environment.
32. Smart Meters, in tandem with In-Home-Display units, are likely to consume far more energy than the old analogue
meters do.
33. The Council of Europes May 2011 report on RF microwave radiation indicated that hundreds of studies have
identified significant impacts of sustained RF microwave radiation on our natural environment, including: stress
reactions and genetic problems in plants, trees, animals and insects, problems in migratory animals like birds and
bees, birth defects in calves and fertility problems in herds.
34. Tree deaths, plant die-offs and bee colony collapse disorder cases have also been reported shortly after Smart Meter
installation/activation in the United States.
I am exercising my lawful right to forbid, refuse and deny consent for the installation and use of any monitoring,
eavesdropping, and surveillance devices on my property, my place of residence and my place of occupancy. That
applies to and includes Smart Meters and surveillance and activity monitoring devices of any and all kinds. Any attempt
to install any such device directed at me, other occupants, my property or residence will constitute trespass, stalking,
wiretapping and unlawful surveillance and endangerment of health and safety, all prohibited and punishable by law
through criminal and civil complaints.
All persons, government agencies and private organizations responsible for installing or operating monitoring devices
directed at or recording my activities, which I have not specifically authorized in writing, will be fully liable for any
violations, intrusions, harm or negative consequences caused or made possible by those devices.
This is legal notice. After this delivery the liabilities listed above may not be denied or avoided by parties named and
implied in this notice. Civil Servant immunities and protections do not apply to the installation of Smart Meters due to
the criminal violations they represent.
I reserve the right to amend this notice and complaint at any time, this is not a complete list of concerns since this
technology is new and new information is being found every day. Concerns listed here are not in any particular order.
Notice to principal is notice to agent and notice to agent is notice to principal. All rights reserved.
