Course Contents
The lecture series MediaMonday is a special offer to the students of the
Hochschule Darmstadt and the public to gain insight in modern media
companies. The referees out of the many fields of new media give
opportunity to discuss their way of producing and designing. They show
structures within their companies and often invite media-students to work
with them in the IP or during their Bachelor.
The elective will deal with marketing strategies, possibilities of advertising
the event, hosting and evaluating the referees, questioning the audience,
catering and eventmanagement, planning the upcoming series of 2013/14,
videotaping the lectures and designing a DVD with booklet.
The participants of the course will work in specialised teams, like the desi-
gnteam, video-team, marketing-team, press-team or web-team. Teams will be
built in our first meetings.
Additionally students may join the course as listener and part of the
documentary-team: Those students have to visit each lecture and write a
summary-paper.

Nietzsche, Heidegger u.a.).

Cybernetic forms of identity may be fiction or reality. They may
confine or liberate. One thing is certain, cybernetic forms of
identity expose possibilities of change, difference, evolution and
revolution. Based upon the texts of Vereni Kuni, Donna Haraway
and Hannah Arendt, students within this course are encouraged
to travel through time and explore the concept of the cyborg as a
transfigurative form of human evolution and revolution. The
fusion of technology with the communication of idea(l)s and
myths allow for a glimpse into human development as it shifts
into post-human existence. Critical assessment of cyber-
mythology help renew social interest of the human as a
transcendent and transfigured form.

Vorbereitungen, Recherchen, Interviews, Schnitt u.a. finden an der HDA
statt .

Fixpunkt bleibt dabei
der Dienstag. Zeit n.V.

Course Contents Was bringt uns zum Lachen? Was ist komisch? Wodurch zeichnet sich eine
Komdie aus? Und was unterscheidet sie von einem Comic? In
maximal Komischen erfolgreich zusammenzubringen.

Course Contents Virtual Reality (VR) relocates users into synthetic computer generated worlds.
Instead of watching a computer screen, one dives into a three-dimensional
audio-visual environment. Interaction happens intuitively by hand and head
movements.
Augmented Reality (AR) superimposes virtual images onto the real
environment. Most notable are mobile applications on smartphones and
tablets (e.g.Layar, Wikitude, etc).
For VR projects an Oculus Rift development kit is provided and can be used
for student projects. For AR we use the free Vuforia toolkit by Qualcomm
running on iOS and Android. For general development we use the game
engine Unity.

Course Contents In this elective project students appreciation of the principles of animation will
be augmented by a fuller understanding of advanced concepts and processes
in the field of character animation.
They will learn how to create believable and lively characters through design
and animation.
They will understand the art of animation and develop an own personal and
individual approach injecting feelings, thought process, and emotion into a
character.
The course will incorporate strong components of character / story
development, character design, animation, 3D skills, and acting fundamentals.
It will cover the topics:
- brief introduction into Maya (hands-on)
- character/story development
- character design
- principles of traditional animation applied to 3D computer animation
- basic understanding of character set-up / rigging /scripting
(animating with forward/inverse/full body kinematic)
- animation workflow
- body mechanics of standard movements
Additional topics to be covered are effective use of camera, multiple
characters with interaction for a film or video game sequence and cycling of
animation for video games/ film.
Students apply techniques learned to create a short (interactive) animation
with a purpose.
We will use Autodesk-Maya as software tool. Other applications or hand
drawn animation might be used by arrangement.
Beside regularly attendance and delivery of the weekly exercises (learning
animation needs lot of practising so plan some time for the weekly
exercises) the final task to deliver to the end of the semester might be:
- a 5 -10 second animation with a given human
character showing body mechanics and some emotional acting
To deliver: A DVD (PAL) hard-cover!, playable on a consumer DVD-Player,
containing the final.
In addition the DVD has to contain a ROM part including a quicktime version
of the final movie (PAL), a short documentation concerning the production and
its development as PDF-document, as well as all exercises done during the
class (quicktime).
Other formats and ways of delivery will not be accepted!

In this Elective students will learn how to plan a game and
develop it using Consturct 2. The course is a rather technical one
where we work is prepared/simple graphics. Construct 2 is
perfect for developing 2D games on the base of HTML5.
The aim of this Elective is giving you an idea about HTML5
development and logigal, algorithmic thinking. Therefore I'll
shortly introduce HTML5. But I'll just scratch on the surface. The
Fokus will be the development of a simple game.
You don't need knowledge in a common programming language.
Nonetheless logic thinking might help. :)

The involvement of the user into the design process right from the beginning of
a project is called "User Centred Design". This method enhances the usability
and user experience of a product to be developed, if the designer is able to
interpret the input of the users in the right way. This course offers two topics:
a) Introduction to usability testing for usability beginners
b) Usability-testing with paper prototypes for the more advanced students

Any other usability projects of usability-advanced students are welcome!

Games are a form of cultural expression. Like other forms, they are not limited
to entertainment. Even games that focus solely on entertainment may be
educational or thought-provoking to a degree.

This Elective is going to give you a broad definition and a selection of
examples of serious games. You will also need to apply this line of thinking to a
product of your own. The group will decide on a topic and work as on a serious
game.

We will get together once a week and discuss the progress.

During the last years, many things we used to do in the physical world were
translated into some virtual digital process. Also, many new pastimes and
activities developed in the realms of the digital. After the first excitement and
euphoria maybe it is about time to rethink: will some of the things we do
virtually probably better be done in the physical world? Will we be able to do
things better, quicker or more exciting with real world tools, created for a
specific task?
We will try to identify activities that take up some time every day and will build
interactive physical (most probably somehow digitally equipped)
representations for them.

Directing the Documentary
This seminar for more experienced students is meant to
introduce you into the concepts relating to contemporary
documentary filmmaking
Once again you will work in a small crew. Each group will at
least complete one project during the summer term in order to
gain experience in research, camera handling, sound
design, directing, organizing, editing.
Other pre-production, production and post-production tasks will
be included and addressed if needed. The emphasis is on
mediamaking as a creative and complete process, from initial
concept to finished presentation. Well shoot, watch some dailies,
talk about it and collect proposals for solutions or improvements .
Furthermore we will focus our attention on the historical,
theoretical hinterland from Nanook to Nomi. How did the
colleagues work years ago, how did things change and whats
actually state of the art in the everlasting interdependence
between our sophisticated tools and our visions. Hows
technology influencing aesthetics ?
Well try to develop working hypotheses about the structures,
techniques and principles of landmark setting documentaries
and short feature films. What could be the spine, the perspective,
the tone or the message ?
Its about plots , fake-plots and sujets.

The elective Practical Sound Recording For Video And Film deals with
numerous methods and possibilities to record sound for fictional film as well
as for documentaries. Besides theoretical background knowledge about
acoustics, microphones, recorders etc. the elective especially focuses on
practical exercises in form of small group projects with conditions like students
will face them in real life: instead of setting up tons of expensive equipment,
the focus is on what is really necessary and how can it be applied creatively to
achieve the best possible results. Sound post production to finalise the
exercises, will also be part of of the elective.
