Ronaldo's father, Jos Dinis Aveiro, died of an alcoholism-related liver condition
at the age of 52 in September 2005 when Ronaldo was 20.[465][466] Ronaldo has s
aid that he does not drink alcohol and he received libel damages over a Daily Mi
rror article that reported him drinking heavily in a nightclub while recovering
from an injury in July 2008.[467]
In October 2005, a month after his father died, Ronaldo was arrested on suspicio
n of raping a woman in a London hotel and released on bail.[468] Ronaldo denied
the allegations and charges were dropped by Scotland Yard in November 2005 due t
o "insufficient evidence". Ronaldo issued a statement saying: "I have always str
ongly maintained my innocence of any wrong-doing and I am glad that this matter
is at an end so that I can concentrate on playing for Manchester United".[469]
Ronaldo became a father on June 17, 2010 following the birth of a son.[470] The
child, named Cristiano, and nicknamed by the family 'Cristianinho',[471] was bor
n in the United States,[472] and Ronaldo announced that he had full custody.[473
] Ronaldo has never publicly revealed the identity of his son's mother.[474]
Ronaldo has previously dated English models Alice Goodwin[475] and Gemma Atkinso
n, and since the start of 2010, he has been dating Russian model Irina Shayk, wh
o he allegedly met through their Armani Exchange campaigns.[476] He is a Roman C
atholic.[477] Ronaldo does not have tattoos as it would prevent him from donatin
g blood, which he does several times a year.[478]
Philanthropy
Television footage of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami showed an eig
ht-year-old boy survivor named Martunis wearing a No. 7 Portuguese football shir
t who was stranded for 19 days after his family was killed. Following this, Rona
ldo visited Aceh, Indonesia, to raise funds for rehabilitation and reconstructio
n.[479][480] After accepting undisclosed damages from a libel case against The S
un newspaper in 2008, Ronaldo donated the damages to a charity in Madeira.[481]
In 2009, Ronaldo donated 100,000 to the hospital that saved his mother's life in
Madeira following her battle with cancer, so that they could build a cancer cent
re in his native island Madeira.[482] In support of the victims of the 2010 Made
ira flood, Ronaldo pledged to play in a charity match in Madeira between the Pri
meira Liga club FC Porto and players from Madeiran based clubs Martimo and Nacion
al.[483]
In 2012, Ronaldo and his agent paid for specialist treatment for a nine-year-old
Canarian boy with apparently terminal cancer.[484] In November 2012, Ronaldo so
ld the golden boot he had won in 2011 for 1.5 million and gave the money to fund
schools for children in Gaza.[485] In December 2012, Ronaldo joined FIFA's '11 f
or Health' programme to raise awareness amongst kids of how to steer clear of co
nditions including drug addiction, HIV, malaria and obesity.[486][487]
In January 2013, Ronaldo became Save the Children's new Global Artist Ambassador
, in which he hopes to help fight child hunger and obesity.[488] In March, Ronal
do agreed to be the ambassador for The Mangrove Care Forum in Indonesia, an orga
nisation aiming to raise awareness of mangrove conservation.[489]

In March 2010, France Football ranked Ronaldo third in its list of the world's h
ighest paid footballers, behind David Beckham and Lionel Messi, with 30 million (
$40.8 million) in combined income from salaries, bonuses and off-field earnings
for the previous 12 months.[490][491] In 2012 his net wealth was estimated at $1
60 million.[492]
In May 2014, Forbes ranked Ronaldo first in their list of the world's highest pa
id players, with earnings of $73 million in combined income from salaries, bonus
es and off-field earnings for the previous 12 months.[493]
