The Denham Town Study
$lace8= Denham Town4 3est ;in!ston 4;in!ston4 ,amaica
Date of reort8= <
rd
. +o#ember 2016
6
Rational:= Denham Town has o#er the last three decades either ulled the attention
of obser#ers as a lace "lled with talents and creati#ity4 a lace burstin! at its
seams with life4 a lace in which one can e>cel in whate#er "eld which one mi!ht
choose=le!al or ille!al? for others Denham town is a lace to be feared4 a lace of
modern day 'obin Hoods and their )erry )en4 a lace where criminals and the
most #iolent of eole are nurtured and encoura!ed4 a lace of the olitical
indoctrinated and the narrow minded. %or those who camai!n for social @ustice4
Denham Town is a lace of AcausesB4 o#erty4 discrimination4 olice brutality4 carnal
abuse and childhood re!nancies etc. Thus for the social scientist4 Denham Town
e>ercises a most owerful ull 4 a ull to understand how the Denham Town
community functions 4 to study and understand how socialiCation is carried out4 to
understand the institutional structure of the community amon! other thin!s.

Objectie:= The ob@ecti#e of this study4 is to !ain an understandin! of the Denham
Town community which has had to confront so many diDculties and odds4 has been
able to roduce so many indi#iduals who ha#e been able to ma:e a ositi#e
contribution to themsel#es4 their families and to the wider society. In other words
8=How has the community roduced so much !ood out of so much badE
!he "#r"ose :- The urose of the study4 is in the "rst instance to assist and
facilitate those members of the %letcher.s4 )ana:er.s and )or!an.s families who are
in#ol#ed in community wor: in the #arious arts of the Fnited States4 in -anada4 in
Trinidad and Toba!o4 in /uyana and in the Fnited ;in!dom4 to better understand the
from another ersecti#e4 those laces which are all the inner cities4 to better
understand those who dwell within the inner cities and most imortantly for these
7
community acti#ists4 social wor:ers and social scientists to understand that there is
hoe and that there is #alue to their wor:.
Of imortance also is to hel those li#in! in the inner city communities to better
rotect what they ha#e4 to assist them in discoura!in! the tendency towards A!an!=
ban!in! A and other socially de#iant beha#ior.
$etho%:- The method used was that of obser#ation o#er a three wee: eriod in
October 20164 with most obser#ation bein! done from the second Goor of a buildin!
at the Hond and -harles streets intersection4 mainly between the hours of 7.00
=10.00 a.m. and &.00 2 12.00 .m. on wee: days4 and for lon!er eriod of time on
wee:ends and Sundays. AOortunistic Obser#ations I ass and watchJ were also
carried out at se#eral other oints in the community. The obser#ations were
concentrated around the Hond and -harles Street intersection and e>tendin! down
to Sanish Town 'oad.
Constraints:- I1J the fact that crude obser#ation notes were written in S)S te>t
form on a cell hone with #ery limited memory caacity4 and the obser#er had to
wait for an oortunity either later in the day or at the start of the ne>t wee:4
means that some information was lost in the rocess. The en#ironment did not allow
for the traditional form of ta:in! "eld notes. I2J The Hawthorne *Kect became a
constrainin! beha#ior modifyin! factor once indi#iduals realiCed that they were
bein! obser#ed. I<J The Linformants. were not at all times reliable and did try to
inGuence what was seen and how e#ents were seen4 which therefore meant that
!reater attention had to be laced on ensurin! the #alidity of the e#ents bein!
obser#ed than would ha#e been li:ed. And I6J The obser#er because of the olitical
orientation of the community Isuorti#e of the oosition arty the ,amaica Labour
9
$artyJ4 his own olitical orientation which is suorti#e of the $eoles +ational $arty4
in addition to his own indi#idual class tye biases had to ma:e si!ni"cant eKort to
either suress those biases or to minimiCe their imact on his understandin! of
e#ents.
System o& ali%ation:- the system of #alidation of obser#ations is based on the
followin!8= I1J 3hat e>ist in other communities4 inner city or non inner city. I2J what
the obser#er has seen in other inner city communities and I<J the obser#er.s own
e>eriences li#in! and wor:in! in the inner city namely ?= ,ones Town4 Allman Town
and Arnett /ardens. I% an e#ent obser#ed in a si!ni"cant manner is outside of the
norms and or standards seen elsewhere 4 for e>amle the case of Athe father
unaccomanied by an adult female4 carryin! two children with him to -hurchB it is
noted that there is no references and no way of con"rmin! the #alidity of
obser#ation seen.
A second le#el of #alidation is the use of hoto!rahs and newsaer articles which
were ta:en from the internet. The hoto!rahs shows a wider icture Aof lifeB as
was seen from the lens of the #arious hoto!rahs a!ainst which ones own
obser#ation can be measured and #alidated4 eMually so is it with the set of articles
downloaded from the internet.
'imitation o& the st#%y:= The study is "rst limited in its alication in terms of
time. Three wee:s is not bein! claimed to be enou!h to !ain a full understandin! of
the community and secondly the At obser#ation Aof a sin!le AstretchB in Denham
Town is not bein! claimed to be a reresentati#e study of the community.
7
Str#ct#re o& !he (oc#ment8= The document is di#ided into three arts. The "rst
art of the document resents hoto!rahs of 3est ;in!ston as were downloaded
from the internet. The second art of the document resents the obser#ations which
were made in that community at the oints seci"es=Hond and -harles Streets
intersection and the stretch on Hond Street from the intersection !oin! down to
Sanish Town 'oad. The third art of the document4 resents articles from ,amaica.s
two main newsaers4 The Daily /leaner and the ,amaica Obser#er.
Concl#sion:= +o conclusion is resented because it is the #iew of the obser#er that
the reader of the document will form his or her conclusion based uon his or her
own e>eriences4 interests etc.
