THE FILM FOUNDATION
The Film Foundation is a non-profit organization established
by Martin Scorsese, dedicated to protecting and preserving
motion picture history by providing annual support for
preservation and restoration projects at the leading film
archives. Film Foundation has saved more than 600 films.
Its board includes renowned filmmakers like Steven
Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint
Eastwood, Robert Redford, Woody Allen, Paul Thomas
Anderson, Alexander Payne, Ang Lee, and Peter Jackson
amongst others.
WORLD CINEMA PROJECT
World Cinema Project is a program of The Film Foundation
dedicated to preserving and restoring neglected films from
around the world- in particular, those countries lacking
sufficient archival, technical and financial resources.

With a mission that embraces the past and is open to the
future, is a multifaceted place for archival conservation and
restoration, film and audiovisual promotion and
dissemination, training, research, and publishing.

Limmagine Ritrovata is a highly specialized film restoration
laboratory, born and developed thanks to Cineteca di
Bologna. Thanks to its innovative methodologies, it is a
leading laboratory in the field and it is designed for the
restoration of film from every cinematic age. They have
restored films of Charles Chaplin, Jean Renoir, Federico
Fellini, Jacques Tati, Luchino Visconti, Yasujiro Ozu, Sergei
Leone, and Ritwik Ghatak.
&LQHWHFD GL %RORJQD DQG /,PPDJLQH Ritrovata have been
successfully conducting summer film restoration schools in
Bologna, Italy since 2007. Given the popularity and demand
for the course, they took the school to Asia in 2013,
conducting a seven-day school in collaboration with the
National Museum of Singapore.

THE SCHOOL: THE FIRST STEP IN SAVING OUR


CINEMATIC HERITAGE
Indian Cinema A Lost Heritage
! For a country that currently produces the largest number
of films in the world -- over 1700 films a year in 32
languages, our record of film archiving and preservation
is abysmal.
! India made 1700 silent films of which only 5 6
complete films survive today.
! By 1950 we had lost 70 80% of our films including

! No full-fledged film restorations have been done in India

have been restored by experts overseas.
! The school is the first step in the Film Heritage
)RXQGDWLRQV ORQJ-term goal to create an indigenous
resource of film archivists and restorers that will work

PROGRAMME DETAILS
The purpose of the school is to address current issues
surrounding film preservation and restoration including
practical training of current restoration and archival best
practices.
40 students from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan will be
selected on merit.
The programme will comprise daily sessions from 9 am 9
pm over 7 days including screenings, lectures and practical
hands-on lessons.
Course content will include modules on film comparing, film
repair, film scanning, digital restoration, colour correction,
sound restoration and film mastering.
The faculty will comprise experts from Cineteca di Bologna,
/,PPDJLQH 5LWURYDWD DQG WKH )LOP )RXQGDWLRQ DQG
filmmakers and guest lecturers from around the world.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applications are open to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and
Nepal.

CERTIFICATION
On completion of the course, participants will be awarded
with a certification as the school is internationally recognized
and under the patronage of FIAF (The International
Federation of Film Archives).
),$) EULQJV WRJHWKHU WKH ZRUOGV OHDGLQJ LQVWLWXWLRQV LQ WKH
field of moving picture heritage, comprising more than 150
institutions in over 77 countries. FIAF members are
dedicated to the rescue, collection, preservation and
screening of moving images.
