DRIVING GROUP WANTS A FOURTH DRIVER

PROBLEM SOLVING EXERCISE BY A-SHIFT

This exercise is an attempt to select an individual from A-shift to fill the current position as driver within the driving group.
The method described below, is an attempt to involve all members of A-Shift in recognising the skills of every one and
from that independently selecting the right candidate based on a simple ranking system.

The aim of this exercise is to help you come about a decision and is therefore not final, so please follow the instructions
below and hopefully you will select the best person based on every ones input.

1. Try and answer this question, “Who will best fit into the role as driver, as part of the driving team on A-Shift”?

2. Using the paper provided, and using your own pens (since you have had enough off me), list all the people on A-Shift

who you think should become part of the driving group so do not write down the names of those already in the driving

group, we are not looking at changing them. (IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS EXERCISE A SUCCESS YOU

MUST WORK ON YOUR OWN, SO NO CONFERRING, TALKING TO EACH OTHER OR COPYING).

The whole point of the exercise is that each individual has his or her own input to the selection.

3. From your list of potential drivers, select only four to go through to the final. If you have only four or less listed then

all of them go through.

4. Now each person in turn calls out the names from the four selected and I will record those names on the flip chart. But

as you go around the group, if a name from your list has already been chosen then you do not repeat it. So you will

end up with a final list of names, which are not repeated on the list.

5. Now the main list generated, give each name a number, i.e. 1 to last name

6. Next we need to rank each of the individuals, so copy the list to the table provided so you have the list in front of you.

7. Take the total number of people and divide it by three, (if there are six names, divide by three = 2)

8. Now the ranking is as follows:

If the person is your average selection give them a 1

If the person is your good selection give them a 2

If the person is you best selection give them a 3

9. To rank individuals it must be balanced, remember the number you calculated in item 7 above. This means that

from the list in front of you, you have to rank two people as a # 1, two people as a # 2, and as you guest it two # 3s

10. So score each person with your raking score. (REMEMBER YOU MUST WORK ON YOUR OWN, SO NO

CONFIRRING, DO IT YOURSELF)

11. Once every one has ranked the list, we need two volunteers. (TWO FROM THE DRIVING GROUP)

12. Using the table provided, record all the names and scores from each person and generate a total for each person at

the end. This will then give you the priority order of selection from the whole group.

13. In order to ensure we have the right people we need to ask some simple questions.

DRIVING GROUP WANTS A FOURTH DRIVER
PROBLEM SOLVING EXERCISE BY A-SHIFT
The Questions:

• Do you want the position as driver on A-Shift

• Do you have a valid FLT licence

• Are you medically passed to drive a licence

If the answer is no to any of the above, then we go back to the list and select the next ranked person and ask the questions

above.

Upon selection, it is necessary to then discuss with the driving group of the selection.

Note if a decision cannot be made, then we can either debate the issue (which will take forever, or I will have to select)
