THE SZAMOSI APPROACH

The Szamosi approach is a way of teaching singing

that was originated by Lajos Szamosi in Hungary in
the 1920s and 30s. The focus is on vocal and musical
freedom. Students work on letting go of tension and
excess effort, and on deepening their ability to hear
and imagine music, all in a spirit of curiosity, experimentation, and play.
The Szamosi approach creates an atmosphere in
which singers can feel safe to suspend self-critical
judgements and allow their musical feeling and imagination to guide their singing. Singers are invited to
explore how this process of releasing physical tension
and giving up self-conscious control can benefit their
singing, both vocally and artistically.
Kinga Cserjsi and Deborah Carmichael are licensed
teachers of the Szamosi Approach*. Since 2012 they
have collaborated on numerous workshops in Budapest
and in New York, most recently the annual il Cuore
Canta workshop series www.ilcuorecanta.com. Kinga and Deborah have also been concertizing together
since 2007.

De Szamosi methode is een zangmethode die werd

ontwikkeld door Lajos Szamosi in Hongarije in de jaren 20 en 30 van de twintigste eeuw. Het accent ligt op
vocale en muzikale vrijheid. De leerlingen werken aan
het loslaten van spanningen, het vermijden van onnodige inspanning en de ontwikkeling van hun muzikale
voorstellingsvermogen, allemaal in een speelse sfeer
van nieuwsgierigheid en experiment.
De Szamosi methode creert een omgeving waarin
zangers zich veilig voelen, zodat ze hun zelfkritische
oordeel op kunnen schorten en zich laten leiden door
hun eigen muzikaliteit en voorstellingsvermogen. Zangers worden aangemoedigd om te verkennen hoe dit
proces van loslaten van spanningen, zelfkritiek en controle hun zingen kan verbeteren, zowel stemtechnisch
als in artistieke zin.
Kinga Cserjsi en Deborah Carmichael zijn bevoegde zangdocenten van de Szamosi methode*. Zij werken
sinds 2012 samen bij diverse workshops in Budapest
en New York, zoals onlangs tijdens de jaarlijkse reeks
workshops Il cuore canta www.ilcuorecanta.com. Kinga
en Deborah geven samen ook concerten sinds 2007.
