MASSAGE LEVEL 5
This programme of study aims to provide students with a strong
theoretical and practical base in therapeutic massage practice.
It provides both a mid-level practitioner qualification and a
steppingstone to the Level 6 Diploma in Applied Massage Therapies.
This is a one year programme that includes the Certificate in
Relaxation.
Relaxation massage papers, plus semester two papers of:

Therapeutic Massage
Intermediate Science
Introduction to Aromatherapy 2
Massage through the Lifespan

By the time Karan was in her early thirties she was living in the Hawkes Bay region with a young
family. Her childhood dream of being involved in the healing arts was rekindled as she nursed her own
children through various childhood illnesses and complaints.
Karan moved to the Manawatu in 2000 to enrol in the Diploma of Professional Aromatherapy and the
Diploma in Applied Massage Therapies programme at UCOL.
Adjusting to adult learning and becoming a single mother of three youngsters was a challenge. Karan
developed strategies for coping and the student support services at UCOL were excellent.
I enjoyed the learning environment as my tutors were encouraging, inspiring and proved to be highly
effective and innovative teachers. It was during my study at UCOL that I realised I was now following my
dream of helping others within the complementary health field of massage .
Since graduating in 2005 with a double diploma Karan has continued to build on her
knowledge of natural medicines.
I work part-time in my own very busy Aromamassage business, Body Sense, where I
use my experience to advise customers, sell health products and practise massage.

ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

This programme may be offered full-time semester 1 and/or parttime semester 2 in the evenings or weekends. This information will
be available at time of enrolment.
There is considerable practical work involving massaging
classmates. The requirement is that students must complete 30
hours of supervised clinical time, where they massage members of
the public. There is no age restriction as long as a person has the
maturity to deal with touching other people and has the physical
ability to massage for up to six hours at a time (with breaks).
However, students need to be able to practice their massage
techniques offsite in their own venue. It is their responsibility to
ensure that they have the location to do this.
The programme is taught in English, so the student needs to have a
reasonable command of the English language, especially due to the
technical and specialised nature of some of the science language.
It is recommended that students have met the literacy and
numeracy requirements for NCEA Level 1 or equivalent. The
Certificate in Relaxation Massage Level 4 can be used as a stepping
stone to the Certificate in Therapeutic Massage Level 5.

successful completion of semester one will entitle you to continue

ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

As this is a health programme students would need to have an
interest in health and wellbeing and be able to role model effective
health practitioner behaviours.
Students must be physically able to complete the massage and
aromatherapy techniques. Students do not receive payment for any
clinical experience whilst
completing programme work for their programme of study. If the
client offers a donation, this is a private interaction between the
student and the client.
Supervised clinical practice occurs on site and under the lecturers
tutelage. Monitored clinical practice also occurs where the student
operates either on site or at own premises. The lecturer monitors
this through phone calls, case studies, client feedback forms. The
student will need to draw on their own contacts initially for clients
to practice on. As they progress through the programme there
will be further opportunities to work on clients in various clinical
environments so students must be comfortable with this.
There is a strong science component to the programme so it is
recommended that students have either 6th Form Certificate or
NCEA Level 2 credits in a science subject or equivalent.
