All drawings, information, qualifications or special conditions submitted with the tender shall form part
of the Contract, provided that these do not in any way prejudice or vitiate any part of the Specification or
Conditions contained in the Engineer's Standard Specification for Civil/ Structural Works. Any extra cost

specifically covered by the Code and this Specification, the Contractor's proposals shall be in accordance
with accepted principles of good foundation engineering practice and shall also be subject to the
Engineer's approval.
In the event that the piling system proposed by the Contractor is acceptable, the Contractor shall obtain a
Professional/Qualified Engineer's endorsement on his proposal before final acceptance.
Failure to comply with the above may render the tender to be rejected.
If at any stage during the progress of work, it is found that the Contractor has failed to comply with the
provisions of this Clause, such works as completed shall be liable for rejection without any payment to
the Contractor.

All Bakau shall also refer to C Trm for the entire 9.25 Section.
Where Bakau piling is included in the tender, the Contractor shall allow for and provide everything
necessary for the proper execution of bakau piling. Any difference in quantities of piling works between
those shown on the Drawings and/or specifications and those executed on site shall be adjusted by
Variation Orders which shall be paid in accordance with the Schedule of Rates. In the event that no

CSS9-PILING/8
Piles shall be driven by experienced operators. Driving of piles shall be by approved means, accurately in
the correct locations, free from deviation of any kind, in accordance with the Engineer's instructions. A
piling frame or tripod with a free drop hammer of approved weight and not less than 200 kg shall be used

be piled to refusal, if necessary. Pile heads shall be protected with a simple steel helmet during driving
and after completion of piling, the heads shall be properly squared and cut off to the required levels.
In the installation of piles where joints are not required, the Contractor may propose other methods of
pile installation subject to Engineer's approval. However, the piles so installed shall have a carrying
capacity equal or greater than piles installed by piling frame method as described above.
Should the pile heads be cut to a level below the specified level, the Contractor shall be required to fill up
at his own expense the difference with concrete of such proportions or with such materials as the
Engineer shall direct.
The bakau piles that are to be piled along precast cantilever drain slab units must be aligned exactly to
where the units are to be sited.
1.25.4
Test Piles
The Contractor shall provide and drive test piles when and where directed by the Engineer to determine
ground conditions or the length of piles required.
1.25.5
Defective Piling
Incorrectly or badly driven piles and piles damaged during driving shall be extracted or replaced or else
duplicated all at the Contractor's own expense.
1.25.6
Pile Jointing
All piles shall be rigidly and securely joined with steel collars of 300mm long made out of No 18 gauge

General
CSS9-PILING/9
The contract includes static load tests, low strain integrity and high strain dynamic pile tests. The low
strain test required is the low strain sonic test or equivalent. The high strain test is the dynamic stress
measurement under a driving hammer impact.
The Contractor shall engage an independent specialist firm, with qualified testing license in Vietnam, in
stress wave measurement to carry out the dynamic pile monitoring. The specialist firm shall have
extensive experience in stress wave measurement and a proven record in such works. The engineer
operator for such works shall have at least 3 years experience in field monitoring and analysis with
adequate qualifications.
Prior to testing, the Contractor shall submit to the Engineer for approval the name of the specialist firm, a
detailed method of testing criteria and parameter used in testing including the preparation of the pile head,
setting up of the hammer for inducing the required impact energy, a list of equipment and operator he
proposes to use for the testing.
All load tests shall be carried out as the Engineer may direct and under the supervision of an experienced
and competent Supervisor who shall be conversant with the test equipment and test procedures.
The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to safeguard his workmen against any hazards that
are involved in the testing or preparation for the testing of piles.
When the dynamic pile test fails to meet with the specified requirement, a static load test shall be carried
out to confirm the failure. The result of the static load test shall form the basis for the rejection of the
working pile.
The static load test performed on piles that failed to meet the requirements shall be borne by the
Contractor and no claim for extra cost and time shall be granted for carrying out the static load test.

CSS9-PILING/10
Any abnormal test record shall be analysed using computer stress wave equation analysis to obtain a
quantitative assessment of pile defects.
The report shall include field plots and analysis. Interpretation of each record for the piles tested and any
stress wave analysis carried out. Any defects indicated shall include the nature, location and severity of
the defect.
1.26.4
The Contractor shall make provision and access to the pile determined by the Engineer to restrike testing.
Such testing shall be carried out at time periods sufficiently long after the end of initial driving to allow
pore water pressure and soil strength changes to occur. In cases where the pile has been driven too close
to the ground level this may require excavation around the pile head or pile extension to an exposed
section of at least three pile diameters below the pile head.
The Contractor shall take set-rebound measurements during testing. For drop hammers and single acting
and steam hammers, the drop of ram or ram travel and number of blows shall be recorded.
All stress wave measurements shall be made in the presence of the Engineer or his authorised
representative.
For the piles tested, the Engineer may select any records of the filed measurement to be analysed using
CAPWAP stress wave analysis or equivalent approved method. The results of the analysis shall include
the static resistance, driving system performance and assessment of integrity of the pile; and shall also
provide separate end bearing, skin friction component of the pile capacity and produce a load settlement
curve.
On completion of the field measurements, the Contractor shall submit a final report covering all aspects
of pile monitoring and analysis work. The report shall incorporate results of the field estimates, results of
the computer analysis and any correlations drawn between the dynamic test results and the geological
information, and static load tests if applicable. The report shall furnish the qualification of the technical
personnel responsible in this testing work, calibration of equipments and sensors, testing agency license
in Vietnam.
