Bridgewater for All: Karelia Street

The Bridgewater Hall would like to invite your

school to take part in its 2015 spring schools
project, Karelia Street.

This project for Key Stage 2 will introduce

children to classical music through Sibelius’
exciting Karelia Suite, a piece of music. As a
class, children will create lyrics and compose
their own pieces of vocal music inspired by
these themes, before perform these in the main
auditorium at The Bridgewater Hall.

The project will begin with poetry sessions in

school, introducing the music’s themes and
ideas and encouraging children to create lyrics.
They will then be invited to attend a concert by
the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra at The Bridgewater Hall, where they will hear
Karelia Suite performed and discover the building and the sound of a live orchestra.
Follow up composition sessions will help them to use their lyrics and their musical
inspiration to create and rehearse their own songs in preparation for performance.

Within the project, children will work with Bridgewater Hall staff, with composer Kate
Pearson and poet Terry Caffrey. Before the concert, they will be invited to a aspecial
introduction, giving them an insight into the instruments of the orchestra, the
programme, and concert etiquette. Schools may choose to use the project as the
basis for further activities, using learning resources based around science and music,
or accrediting children’s creativity through Arts Award Discover or Explore.

Project practicalities

The entire project is offered free of charge, and is funded directly by Bridgewater for
All, The Bridgewater Hall’s Learning and Participation department. Each school will be
offered:

Symphony Orchestra’s concert in February
1.5 days of music workshops in school with Kate Pearson

Participating schools will be asked to commit to:
Providing transport and staffing for 2 visits to The Bridgewater Hall, which will
fall outside of usual school hours
Providing a suitable space and staffing for all workshops in school
Ensuring that students receive relevant information about each session and
that appropriate permissions are received for out of school visits
