TRACTOR SALES ARE UP. TRACTOR SALES ARE DOWN. Both of these statements
are true, but how can that be? Its all in how you look at the numbers.According to recent reporting
by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), tractor sales have definitely been a bit of
a mixed bag. Four-wheel drive farm tractor sales are down 15% this year, and combine sales are
down 17% this year. But other categories are showing modest gains, according to AEM ag sector
lead Charlie OBrien.
Smaller horsepower tractors, under 40 horsepower, are up 8.7%, and horsepower at 40-100 are up
7%, he says, speculating that demand from
the dairy sector could be partly fueling these

sponsored by:
AEM also looks at net farm income as it
could relate to future equipment sales, explains AEM market intelligence analyst Benjamin Duyck.
When we look at farm income business
income, we can get a better sense where
farm income is expected to increase and
decrease, he says.
The areas hit hardest by reduced farm income include the Northern Great Plains (14.8%), the Heartland (-16.4%) and the Mississippi portal (a/k/a the Mid-South, -27.5%). Duyck
says the big question right now is how long the downturn in farm income will last. According to
USDA analysis, a gentle decline in export values and farm cash receipts could continue through
2016, and increase after that.
And while lower commodity prices remain the driving force behind these changes, Duyck says
other factors are also in play. First of all, he says capital expenditures on machinery are expected to
decrease from past highs due to a change in tax incentives and subsidies. Second, farmland values
are rising slowly enough that they can limit a farmers ability to use it as collateral, thus reducing
capacity to get credit. Third, Duyck says the used equipment market has become inflated in recent
years.
The large inventory of used equipment sitting on dealer lots is not only decreasing the ability of the
dealers to purchase and finance new equipment, but is also lowering the value of the trade-ins
farmers tend to use when buying new equipment, he says.
Duyck predicts farm equipment sales will experience a multi-year adjustment from historical
highs. OBrien adds that he is hopeful most farmers are still carrying strong balance sheets from
prior years, and that the need for increased productivity and efficiency is ever-present.
We continue to need the technology that our equipment offers, he says.

Its easy to talk about the ideals of our country, but then its clearly a different matter to hold
to your convictions and put words into action. The Veterans of our country are our best

be better Patriots, whether in or out of uniform, and stand up for and demand that our rights,
values and freedoms be maintained, those actions in themselves would be a great tribute to all
Veterans who have served and are presently on duty around the world. When ever I see a

PATRIOT FLIGHTS: On September 10th, 55 World War II and Korean War Veterans and their guardian escorts left Albany International
Airport to visit the memorials dedicated to their service in Washington, DC. The flight, sponsored by Patriot Flight, part of the Honor Flight
Network, was the second of the year put on by Patriot Flight, one of two Honor Flight hubs to serve the Capital District, southern Vermont and
western Massachusetts. Through the efforts of volunteers and the generous contributions provided by individuals, Veterans organizations,
corporations and others, the flights are provided free of charge to the veteran. Guardians pay a reduced airfare but receive free transportation in
Washington as well as meals and associated tours. Without the generous outpouring of support from groups like the American Legion, The
Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Veterans Motorcycle Club and others, these flights could never take place said Frank DeSorbo, spokesman for
Patriot Flight. He added that the difficulties in finding veterans are increasing as years go on and the number of World War II Veterans
decrease. The flights are expanding to include more Korean War Veterans. This effort to find and enroll veterans is where the dedicated
volunteers of Patriot Flight are integral. Volunteers are frequently seen manning booths at veterans events throughout the region. Reaction by
Veterans whether to the motorcycle escort from Christian Brothers Academy, the outpouring of support at Albany International Airport, the
reception at BWI, during the tours, or upon return to the reception of family and friends, is priceless. Many speak of experiencing the
camaraderie they felt during their service for the first time in many years. Listening to them swap war stories on the plane and busses during the
tour or at the various memorials often brings tears to the eyes of the guardian escorts. If you are a World War II or Korean War Veteran or know
a veteran who is physically capable of making the trip to Washington and would like more information or an application to travel or are
interested in travelling as aguardian, more information can be obtained by visiting Patriot Flights web site at www.patriotflight.com. Their next
flight is scheduled for May 2015.
OBSERVANCE:
Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all
wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the
American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am.
Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities.
Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11. However, if it falls on a Sunday, it is officially
celebrated on the Monday following. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an
armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should
be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the countrys service and with gratitude
for the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business
activities at 11am.
In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the
anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress
also requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the
flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the
United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate
ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."
An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November
11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor
veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service
men in the history of the United States and the American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans
service organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans". Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans,
where ever and whenever they had served.
