1. What is the subject of the article? (title or overall theme of the article)
The article is about Barack Obama placing a pause on congressional voting in order to
see how diplomat negotiation will go with the Syrian and Russian governments.
2. Who is involved? (names of people, political parties, lobbying groups, etc.)
President Barack Obama, citizens and government officials of Syria and Russia,
Secretary of State John Kerry, U.S. Congress, Russia President Vladimir Putin, United Nations.
3. When did the events occur? (date of event/ if no date, when the article was written)
The events occurred on Tuesday, September 10.
4. How does the article relate to U.S. History? (explain with examples)
This article relates to U.S. history because it tells about how the United States is working
out diplomatic negotiations with a foreign nation instead of directly attacking the nation. This
falls under the category of U.S. and foreign affairs.
5. How does this information impact people (local, state, national)?
This information impacts people all over the world and in the United States. It concerns
countries Syria, and Russia, because it tells about how the United States is trying to get Russia
and Syria to turn over their chemical weapons to International forces, and the U.S. will hold their
attacks on Syria, and suspected areas with chemical weapons.
6. What are your thoughts about the subject presented in the article? (content not structure/ do
you agree or disagree, what are your ideas or suggestions about the information)
I thought that it was a good idea of the President to pause the voting, because it shows
that the U.S. is serious in the negotiation progress, and that they are willing to cease any attacks
as long as Syria turns over all of their chemical weapons to an International force. I believe that
if Syria agrees to turn over their weapons, then the U.S. will save many innocent lives by not
having to bomb Syria in order to get the chemical weapons. Also, without the weapons, many of
the thousands of deaths occurring in Syria can be prevented.
7. What does pausing the voting in Congress show Syria?
This shows Syria that we will fulfill our promise to not bomb or attack them as long as
they turn over their chemical weapons. This adds a sense of security for Syria when they make
negotiations with the U.S.

8. Was John Kerrys decision to tell Syria that they could prevent a bombing if they gave up their
weapons a good idea?
I believe that this was a very good idea, and although it wasnt initially intended, this
helps show that we can solve the crisis that has been going on in Syria without the use of
violence.
9. If Syria doesnt come through with negotiations with the U.S. should we still attack and bomb
them?
Although I believe that we will find a negotiation, in the case of this not going through, I
think that the U.S. is obligated to take a stand to the disaster that has been going on in Syria, and
if that means that we must resort to violence, then we should try a quick attack and destroy their
weapons in the attack.
