Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only

light can and hate cannot drive out hate,
only love can do that. This is according to
Martin Luther King Jr.
As the world tries to shift from the
concept of providing freebies to poorer
communities because of corruption and
misuse of funds by the funded
organisations, Partners World Wide also
moves in the same direction.
An event with the name Marketplace
Revolution 2014 to help fight poverty was
held in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the USA
On October 30 to 31.
South African delegates from
Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre were
among those who attended the event that
was organised by Partners Worldwide.
Partners Worldwide started in 1994 as
Partners for Christian Development when
Kenyan and American business people met
to establish a loan fund for small and
medium enterprises. The Orginisation has
now evolved into Partners Worldwide with
the mission to mobilize a global Christian
network that uses business as a way to
create flourishing economic environments
through partnerships with community
institutions that build up permanent local
capacity and catalyze entrpreneurs and job
creators. The motto of the event was:
Business, Dignity ending poverty and the
aim of the event was to find ways to
eradicate poverty through good governance
and proper mentoring.
In his opening address, the President of
Partners Worldwide, Doug Seebeck,
emphasised the need to end poverty by
2030. He said that the organisation has
been growing from strength to strength
since its inception in 1995.
I know you felt the power of prayer and
have travelled long distances to share your
stories of accomplishment and to plan the
next phase of our work to be done. We are
faithfully pursuing a world without poverty
he said. The event was scheduled in many
sessions and the attendees were given a
chance to connect with other partners from
different countries and shared their stories.
Among others, Southern Africa was
represented by Swaziland, Zimbabwe,
Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and
Malawi. Eastern and West Africa, Kenya,
Liberia, Nigeria, Uganda and Cote dIvoire,
Ghana, Liberia. From Asia, India, Sri Lanka
and Myanmar.

The United States was represented by

Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Illinois,
Tennessee, Michigan and Washington.
Caribbean countries were represented by
Haiti and Trinidad. Latin America was
represented by, Ecuador, Honduras,
Nicaragua and Guatemala. South East Asia
was represented by China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan and Philippines. Canadian
representatives were also present.
The South African delegates also visited
church organisations, school institutions,
community centres and business
organisations and entrepreneurial
establishments and shared ideas and new
ways in community development. They also
visited Baxter Community Centre which
provides social services to disadvantaged
communities.
In this centre they are taught various life
skill tasks such as sewing, health,
education, library and computer skills.
Baxter Community Center also has a child
development centre where children receive
educational benefits as well as day care. In
addition, Baxter also has a clinic where
community residents may receive medical,
dental and counselling services. Baxter
Community Centre visited Kgautswane
Thusong Service Centre in 2011 on an
exchange programme, hence the visit.
Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre
Manager Clara Masinga said the visit was
educational and very beneficial. We have
learned that communities can never live on
hand-outs forever. We need to start our own
sustainable initiative projects that will benefit
our communities.
I would like to thank Partners Worldwide
for giving us the opportunity to learn from
our peers globally. We would also like to
thank the following people; John Apol and
wife Judith for hosting us during our 9 day
visit, Louis Haveman and his wife Jan, and
Paul Scholten for connecting us with
Michigan institutions.
Our experience in the USA was not all
work; it was some play as well.
We visited Lake Michigan, one of the five
great lakes in the USA, a lake that is about
500 kilometres long, and is as much as 145
kilometres wide; we also visited Meijer
Gardens, a botanical and sculpture park
which has received worldwide attention, and
also visited the Gerald R. Ford presidential
museum. Ford was a former president of
the USA, she said.

R555 at Steelpoort under construction

The R555 through Steelpoort is currently under
construction.
This week work progressed to the stage where
motorists are being directed onto a new patch of road
recently constructed next to the existing one.
Work on the old one has already started and at some
places there are still
deep excavations
next to the road.
Motorists may from
time to time
experience a delay
during the
construction and

they are advised to keep that in mind when planning a trip.

Patience may be required while the work is being done.
Also be on the lookout for construction vehicles and
workers.
Motorists can look forward to a wider, stronger road without
the potholes that was so common on the old one.

Living in a dump

Many Burgersfort residents feel like they are living in a rubbish dump. People dump their
household rubbish almost anywhere in town with no repercussions. Nobody, including the
authorities do anything to clean up these spots in town. Platinum Gazette took this
photograph in Aloe Ridge, but similar sites in Extension 5 have been published before, with
no improvement to date. This particular dump in Aloe Ridge is proving to be a popular
breakfast spot for the baboons living on the outskirts of town. Residents fear that they will
grow too tame and start visiting the nearby homes for easy food.

Two Rivers Platinum demonstrates its

support for local SMME
A local community-based bakery becomes
another beneficiary of Two Rivers Platinums
Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD)
initiative. On Tuesday, the Executive Mayor
of Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM), Clr
Michael
Ngcongwane
and
the
representatives of Two Rivers Platinum, led
by the Bethrum Dzonzi, handed over a brand
new bakkie worth R150,000 (One Hundred
and Fifty Thousand) to Fanang Diatla Bakery.
The bakkie will now be used to deliver fresh
bread and other confectionaries produced
by the local bakery to local schools and other
customers.
The partnership between Two Rivers
Platinum (TRP), Thaba Chweu Municipality
(LED department) and the Fanang Diatla
project was initiated in 2013 and to date, it
has created five new jobs for local people.
As part of its SLP commitment, TRP approved
the projects request for the conversion of
an unused beer hall which was situated next
to a local hostel into a bakery. Through this
initiative an experienced confectioner and
his local partners were assisted in registering
a co-operative.
TRP is a strong proponent of integrated
sustainable development and believe in the
notion of Ubuntu. We believe that our
children, regardless of where and who they
are, especially from our core communities
and the labour sending areas, should be
protected and nurtured at an early age as
they are our future leaders said Mr Adriaan
de Beer, Two Rivers Platinums Business
Leader.
To this end, and as part of our CSI (HIV/AIDS)
programme, TRP currently support various
feeding schemes in Mashishing/Lydenburg
catering for over 400 leaners from destitute
families with daily meals whilst at school,
procured from Fanang Diatla Co-operative
Bakery. This initiative clearly aligns to our
philosophy of ensuring that local SMMEs are
integrated into our procurement value
chain, added Mr de Beer.

The fresh bread will now be delivered to customers

Your chance for a Midnite Special

Lets explain something first.
Platinum Gazette knows about
comfortable and uncomfortable when
you talk about vehicles. The daily
roundabout is a little 4 x 4 beastie
with live fixed axles, and many a
time a long distance trip was
attempted, without power and speed.
This little thing jumps like mad at the
smallest imperfection in the road and
sometimes you question your own
sanity of even thinking to go faster
than 80 km per hour. On the dirt and
in the boondocks it works its magic
though The editors vehicle on the
other hand is the direct opposite, a
large beast with air suspension with a
ride akin to a mattress, even on a 4 x
4 track, but not much use in the
month-end traffic when you are
looking for a parking space. With
authority we can declare that the
Isuzu KB300LX Midnite Edition is
one of the most comfortable vehicles
we have ever driven, comfort that
belies that it is supposed to be a
bakkie. The 4 X 2 manual that we
could take for a short spin this week
thanks to Westvaal Steelpoort,
floated over various surfaces.

The fit and finish on this vehicle,

decked in Maranello Red, but also
available in Athenian White and Star
Silver, all with black trim, leather,
grille, wheels, roll-over bar and side
steps, is impeccable (and roof rails).
In Midnite trim the bakkie
certainly looks the part and goes as
well as it looks. It is powerful and
fitted with a rear diff lock to
complement the five speed gearbox,
which we feel, is just right for any
job you want to throw at it.
And it is beautiful, which is
perhaps the whole point, as
mechanical specs do not really differ
from the normal KB300LX.
The Midnite special edition is
available in 4 x 4 manual, 4 x 2 auto
and 4 x 2 manual and only a limited
number will be available.
During our time with the bakkie,
not a single gripe surfaced until the
drivers side sun shield was opened
and lo and behold, no mirror
The vehicle sells north of R400
000 and only a limited quantity will
be available. So, phone Westvaal
Steelpoort as soon as you have the
chance before every one is sold.

When you have bought your new bakkie, or are travelling in any other
vehicle, be extra careful just before the JG Strydom Tunnel between
Ohrigstad and Hoedspruit. They are still working at the big hole, and a
stop and go is in place.

Isaiah 40 : 1 2 (NIV)
1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to
Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been
completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from
the Lords hand double for all her sins.
