Problem 7

Consider a thin aluminum cylinder of length 1 m and inner and outer radii 0.2 m & 0.21 m
respectively. The cylinder is kept fixed at one end and at the other end a tensile load of 200 kPa
is applied. The fixed end of the cylinder is at 273.15 K (the ambient temperature) and the free
end at 274.15 K (all other sides are insulated). The cylinder expands due to the heat flow. On the
viewport show the position of the maximum and minimum stress. Also select a single node and
plot a graph of Max. Principal stress versus Max. Principal strain.

Solution
Part

Create a deformable solid shape in the 3-D modeling space through extrusion.
Enter 1 as the approximate size and click Continue
Create a circle with 0, 0 as the center and 0.21, 0 as the perimeter.
Similarly create another circle with the same center and perimeter point as 0.2, 0.
Press Esc to exit the circle definition and then press done.

Enter the extrusion depth as 1 and press Ok.

Click Auto-Fit View in the toolbar above to zoom out and view all the points.

Material Property

Section

Name the material Aluminum

Enter the Youngs modulus as 70e9 and Poissons ratio as 0.33.
Enter the mass density as 2700 from the General tab.
From the Mechanical tab select Expansion and edit the reference temperature to
273.15 and the expansion coefficient to 23e-6.
Select Conductivity from the Thermal tab, and enter 160 as the thermal
conductivity.
Also from the Thermal tab select Specific Heat and enter the value as 900, and
click Ok.

Name the section as you like.

Define a Solid and homogeneous section.
Select the material as Aluminum.
Assign the defined section on the part created.

Assembly

Step

Assembly the part created and selects Independent as the instance type, click
OK.

Define the analysis on this model by selecting Coupled temp-displacement as

the procedure and click Continue.
Under Basic tab change the Response to Steady-state and click OK.

BCs and Load

Pinned (U1=0, U2=0, U3=0) the bottom face (z=0) of the cylinder by selecting
Symmetry / Antisymmetry / Encastre.
From the Create Boundary Condition dialog box switch Category to Other and
select Temperature and click Continue. Select the bottom face of the cylinder
and press Done. Enter the magnitude as 273.15 and click OK. Similarly put the
top face at 274.15.

Apply the load

From the Create Load dialog box Select Surface Traction and click Continue.
Select the top face of the cylinder (z=1) (it gets highlighted in red) and click
Done.
Change the Traction type to General. Click on the Edit tab under Direction in
the dialog box. Enter the starting point of the direction vector as (0, 0, 0) and the
end point as (0,0,1). Enter the Magnitude as 2e5 and click OK.

Mesh

From the mesh toolbox select Seed Part Instance. Enter the approximate global
size as 0.025.

Select Assign Element Type from the mesh toolbox. Under Family select
Coupled Temperature-Displacement and switch Geometric Order to Quadratic.
Click OK.
Click on Mesh Part Instance and then on Yes to mesh the model.

Visualization Hint
Main menu bar>Option>Contour>Limits>Show location.
Tool>XY Data>Create>ODB field output>Unique Nodal>E: Strain
component>Max.Principal>select a node>Plot>Save. Repeat the procedure and now
chose S: Stress component>Max.Principal>select the same node>plot>save.
Combine the two graphs
Click on Operate on XY data, write the command as combine( , ) and double click
on E:Max Principal and then S:Max Principal but separated by comma ,.
