As I passed through the gates I heard a squeaky voice. A diminutive middle-aged man
came out from behind the trees the caretaker. He worked a toothbrush-sized stick
around in his mouth, digging into the crevices between algae'd stubs of teeth. He was
barefoot; he wore a blue batik shirt known as a buba, baggy purple trousers, and an
embroidered skullcap. I asked him if he would show me around the shrine. Motioning me
to follow, he spat out the results of his stick work and set off down the trail.

2) Looking back on a childhood filled with events and memories, I find it rather difficult to
pick on that leaves me with the fabled warm and fuzzy feelings. As the daughter of an
Air Force Major, I had the pleasure of traveling across America in many moving trips. I
have visited the monstrous trees of the Sequoia National Forest, stood on the edge of the
Grande Canyon and have jumped on the beds at Caesars Palace in Lake Tahoe. However, I
have discovered that when reflecting on my childhood, it is not the trips that come to
mind, instead there are details from everyday doings; a deck of cards, a silver bank or an
ice cream flavor. One memory that comes to mind belongs to a day of no particular
importance. It was late in the fall in Merced, California on the playground of my old
elementary school; an overcast day with the wind blowing strong. I stood on the blacktop,
pulling my hoodie over my ears. The wind was causing miniature tornados; we called them
dirt devils, to swarm around me.

3) I just got home from school. It was terrifying. I am usually proud of who I am, but my
classmates made me feel ashamed. No one would speak to me and I felt like an outcast. I
should have stayed at my old school. I'm never going to be able to become a lawyer
learning like this. How could I have thought this would work out? This was the worst day of
my life.

4) Victory seemed unlikely. Mount Saint Michael were two sets down and St. Leos certainly
had the upper hand in the third set, dominating 9 points to 2. Each time St. Leos scored,
they pounded the ground in unison, further intimidating an already shaky Claremorris
team. So how, in these circumstances, did they snatch victory from the jaws of almost
certain defeat?

5) The first set seemed to suggest two teams who were equally matched. Michaels fought
point for point against a Leos team whose defence was almost impenetrable, yet Edel

Nolan managed to hit home some impressive spikes. However, as the set drew to a close,
they found themselves unable to finish the job and St Leos stormed into the second set
with a 25-22 win in the first set under their belt.

6) Long time ago, there was a couple in Barangay Masagana (Pampanga today) who wanted
a daughter. Their wish was granted and the wife gave birth to a baby girl. They called her
Maria. Maria was very beautiful but very shy that she wouldn't go out from their house.
Weeks later, Spaniards came to their town. The Spaniards were very cruel that they get
everything they wanted. They rob houses and kill everyone who gets in their way and who
refuses to give what they wanted.
The couple was very frightened to lose their daughter so, they hid Maria in the bushes so
the Spaniards couldn't find her.
After the Spaniards left their town, the couple tried to look for Maria but they couldn't
find her even in the bushes where they hid her, instead they found a little plant that is
very sensitive that when you touch it, it would immediately close.

7) Bigfoot has been described as a large ape-like, hairy man beast standing 7-10ft tall in rural
North America since the mid-19th century. However the legend seems to transcend this
with native American tribes also having lore of a man type beast in the forest.
While most are sceptical of the existence of a Bigfoot animal some scientists have put
forward theories albeit unsubstantiated, that Bigfoot may be linked to prehistoric
humans. Soviet scientist Boris Porshnev, suggested that Bigfoot/ Sasquatch and his
Siberian counterpart, the Almas, could be a remnant of Neanderthal man.
Other theories of the origin of Bigfoot are that it originated from an extinct giant ape; it is
a highly-evolved creature, or even an extraterrestrial.
8) Sport
Grimthorpe has a wide range of sports facilities, both public and private. There is a large
modern leisure centre in the High Street and facilities include a swimming pool, a sports
hall for judo, fencing and other activities, and tennis courts. The centre runs courses in all
these sports and these tend to be very popular. Membership costs 150 a year, which was
felt to be rather expensive, but a special temporary membership is available to visitors.
The public swimming pool on the outskirts of the town is older, less attractive and often
overcrowded, but entry is only 1.50.

Theatres
There are two theatres in town, the Kings Theatre in Bee Street, which offers mainly
serious drama and has a good reputation for its productions of Shakespeare, and the
Little Theatre in Sea Street which specialises in lighter entertainment and the occasional
pop concert. In general, it seems that the Kings Theatre is more popular with the older
members of the community while the Little appeals more to people in their teens and
twenties.

9) What are bullying and harassment?

These terms are used interchangeably by most people, and many definitions include bullying as a
form of harassment. Harassment, in general terms is unwanted conduct affecting the dignity of
men and women in the workplace. It may be related to age, sex, race, disability, religion, sexual
orientation, nationality or any personal characteristic of the individual, and may be persistent or
an isolated incident. The key is that the actions or comments are viewed as demeaning and
unacceptable to the recipient.
Bullying may be characterised as offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an abuse
or misuse of power through means intended to undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure the
recipient. Bullying or harassment may be by an individual against an individual (perhaps by
someone in a position of authority such as a manager or supervisor) or involve groups of people. It
may be obvious or it may be insidious. Whatever form it takes, it is unwarranted and unwelcome
to the individual.
Examples of bullying/harassing behaviour include:

spreading malicious rumours, or insulting someone by word or behaviour (particularly on

the grounds of age, race, sex, disability, sexual orientation and religion or belief)

copying memos that are critical about someone to others who do not need to know

ridiculing or demeaning someone - picking on them or setting them up to fail

exclusion or victimisation
