Deals with t h e determination of the flow propempties of expansive and unsaturated clays under different corzLitions of stress. By choosing
the moisture content as the dependent variable,
the well known non-linear diffusion equation is
derived. Numerical solutions using a finite element program are presented, and a procedure is
proposed to derive the flow properties of the
clay from the sorption curves. A relationship
is shown between applied stress, moisture diffusivity arzl relative moisture content.

The solutions can be used in numerical procedures to solve a variety of consolidation,
plasticity and faulting problems in soil and
rock mechanics. The emphasis is on boundary
integral equations, in real or transformed time.
