Deals with t h e determination of the flow propempties of expansive and unsaturated clays under different corzLitions of stress. By choosing
the moisture content as the dependent variable,
the well known non-linear diffusion equation is
derived. Numerical solutions using a finite element program are presented, and a procedure is
proposed to derive the flow properties of the
clay from the sorption curves. A relationship
is shown between applied stress, moisture diffusivity arzl relative moisture content.

These two methods are compared with conventional incremental-loading consolidation tests in
an extensive testing l~ogr~mmm on 3 soils.
Their feasibility for routine testing procedures is discussed.

Reports permeability studies (including the relationahip between void ratio, hydraulic gradient and pore water flow) in a newly developed
apparatus to test the validity of Darcy's law
for a clay soil. The law is found to be only
partially valid and the effect of this on consolidation in the region of a sand drain is
considered. Deformation measurements were made
in a larger apparatus which together with theoretical solutions indicate that samd drains
have limited applicability in soft soils.

SINGLE FRACTURE
lwai, K

Investigates the applicability of the cubic law
to fluid flow through natural fractures, simulated by mating 2 halves of tension-cracked
cylindrical rock samples. The independent effects of geometric factors such as large-scale
roughness and contact area were also tested.
Results showed that fracture permeability although a unique function of apertures is not a
unique function of stress, but also relates
to stress history. Flow is governed by the cubic law if the aperture exceeds 0.2 mm.

The solutions can be used in numerical procedures to solve a variety of consolidation,
plasticity and faulting problems in soil and
rock mechanics. The emphasis is on boundary
integral equations, in real or transformed time.

the volt,he change of a soll is considered as
two components, consolidation and dilatancy,
and these are computed independently. The analysis is applied to a strip footing and an
embankment.
