Knowledge Management System (KMS) (30% of Course Grade)

From the syllabus: Hyperlinked document, blog, website, or database organizing elearning resources helpful to the candidate, including professional literature, websites,
learning objects, repositories, and lesson plans. Candidates will be directed to add
resources within particular categories related to program standards, and they may add
entries in a self-directed manner. Descriptive and reflective annotations will be required.
The framework for the KMS will be the Online Teaching Endorsement Competency
Checklist, a full list of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required. Candidates will
be required to self-assess and to annotate progress during CIED 7601. The purpose of
the Knowledge Management System is to show clear evidence of developing mastery of
selected course objectives of CIED 7601, and to maintain a record of progress in the
Online Teaching Endorsement requirements, if the candidate is pursuing that goal.
(Course objectives 4; 5; 18-23; 25; 30)
Overview
Students will construct an artifact that can be used as a personal knowledge
management system, constructed in a wiki. The home page of the wiki will include an
introduction and reflective caption explaining the evolving growth and progress of the
product (artifact). The remainder of the wiki will assembled to the current and future
work of the student in specified content areas. The KMS will be constructed and/or
maintained in each of the Online Teaching Endorsement (OTE) courses (CIED 7601,
CIED 7602, and CIED 7603). If students take multiple courses in the sequence, it is
expected that the KMS will become more detailed when revisited in each course.
A required organizing feature of the KMS is the Online Teaching Endorsement
Competency Checklist (OTECC). During the course, your instructor will guide you in
construction and maintenance of your KMS. There will be some prescribed elements
during the course, and directed responsibility for you to take the initiative to build your
KMS to organize and archive e-learning resources helpful to you (e.g., professional
literature, websites, learning objects, lesson plans).
The KMS will provide an organized repository for all evidence of accomplishment of
course and program objectives. Within the KMS, you will be required to self-assess and
to annotate progress on targeted outcomes according to the OTECC, hyperlinking
specified documents and projects that support satisfaction of the checklist items. The
instructor of each course in the Online Teaching Endorsement sequence will add
assessment judgments to the OTECC as well. At the end of the program (completion of
the three specified courses for the Online Teaching Endorsement), the candidates
advisor will use the OTECC and supporting KMS as evidence of candidate readiness for
endorsement recommendation.

Knowledge Management System PRODUCT

The KMS will consist of a wiki developed using the free service at PBworks
(pbworks.com). When you create your wiki, you will give access to your instructor by
sharing your wiki, and giving the instructor the role of editor. You may also choose to
share your wiki with other students during development or upon completion. You will
submit the project by the date indicated in the schedule by notifying the instructor of the
readiness for review through a Mail message in WebCT. Although you may find general
instructor comments posted directly in the wiki, all critical feedback and evaluative
comments will be communicated from the instructor to the student in Mail and My
Grades.
The KMS in CIED 7601 will include the following six pages (sections). Use the exact
titles, and build the pages to the general specifications described. Make sure that the
CIED Minimum Requirement is met for each section.
[NOTE: If CIED 7601 is the class in which you initially build your KMS, you need only
include the CIED 7601 Minimum Requirement. If you have built your KMS in another
course (CIED 7602) you should enrich each section with additional material from CIED
7601].
1. Introduction and Reflection (due at end of week 2)
In a brief narrative, you should describe your biography, goals, and accomplishments in
the area of teaching and learning with technology. You should also guide the wiki visitor
with a description of the organization of your KMS. Providing a list of links to the other
five pages in your wiki with links is one way to do this. Adding a sidebar is another
method of providing the reader with a tool to navigate through your wiki content.
This section may include photographs or other graphics. Links should be absent or
limited. If students take multiple courses in the OTE sequence, it is expected that this
section will be revised during each course to represent the most current level of
reflection and accomplishment.
CIED 7601 Minimum Requirement: Write a brief biography. Include indication as to
whether you are planning to pursue the Online Teaching Endorsement, or whether you
are taking CIED 7601 as an elective or part of another degree program. Make this
opening page a welcoming introduction to your wiki. Add a navigational aid (links to the
other five pages in your wiki and/or a sidebar with links to the other pages).
What you are demonstrating in this section: The student will demonstrate continual growth in
technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

accomplishments. Build a list of *annotated URLs to resources that help you to develop
technology skills. Note: *To annotate means to critically evaluate and describe.
CIED 7601 Minimum Requirements:

Examine the NETS-T (on ISTE web site). In an opening narrative, give one concrete
example of your work performance related to each of the major standards areas:
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility
5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership (2008, ISTE)

Build a contact list for valued peers, colleagues, and experts. List the colleagues
(both within and without your class) who are your technology family. You may want
to continue to share your wiki with these colleagues by giving them your URL.

What you are demonstrating in this section: The program shall insure that the candidate
possesses knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described
in the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) as well as competency in

Knowledge Management System PROCESS

1. Read this assignment carefully.
2. View any examples indicated by the instructor.
3. Go to http://pbworks.com.
4. Under the For Education link select sign up now. Now create your own FREE
BASIC account at PBworks. The site gives clear step-by-step guidance; and the
Help section is very detailed. Ive outlined the steps below as well.
a. Click on Signup. Under the Basic FREE column click SELECT.
b. Choose your address -- Youll be asked to choose a site name. Since this
is a class project, and the instructor will review your wiki, wed like to
standardize how they are named. Use Eteacher <First Name Last Name>
for example EteacherJaneDoe -- In the blank space after address enter
space enter EteacherFirstnameLastname -- Your site name cannot have
spaces or punctuation. If you take other courses in this endorsement,
youll use the same site.
c. Check For Education on the purpose of the wiki.
d. Under Company Type select K-12 classroom.
e. Under Workspace purpose select Collaborative classroom
f. Enter your name and VSU or GSU email address. Make sure to use a
password you can remember and that will be usable and memorable. Do
not use a password that is private or used for accounts that would

Page 6
generate security concerns.
g. Click the next button at the bottom. The next screen will advise you to log
in to your email account to finish creating the new PBworks account. If you
dont see a confirmation message look in your Trash or Spam folder
some email system filters might send this kind of mail there.
h. Choose your workspace's security settings -- Change the default from
Anyone to Only people I invite or approve (two places).
i. Read the Terms of Service and then check that you agree. If you have
reservations, let me know.
j. Click on Take me to my workspace. Note your address
(http://EteacherFirstLast.pbworks.com) and your password in a safe place.
The address for the example account is
http://eteacherjanedoe.pbworks.com/ (You can find a sample wiki with the
specific pages, the assignment and minimum page requirements at this
link.)
5. Now its time to give access to the wiki to your instructor and colleagues, too, if
you want. Within your wiki, look to the lower right for the area where you can
Share this Wiki. Insert the VSU email for your instructor and give the instructor
the role of editor. Click user settings after entering your instructors email
address. To the right of the email address click the box that says writer and
change it to editor. It is advisable to give writer access to a good proofreader;
you do not have to do so immediately. The proofreader does not have to be from
VSU/GSU.
6. Create the six required pages for the KMS. If you need help with creating a page
view this video clip.
a. Us the following names and create six pages: (TIP -- copy and paste each
page name into PBworks. Each page name should be exactly as listed
below.)
Introduction and Reflection
My Technology Resources, Skills and Practice
My Online Teaching Resources, Skills and Practice
My Digital Citizenship Resources, Skills and Practice
My Access, Assessment and Feedback Resources, Skills and Practice
My Online Teaching Endorsement Competency Checklist
7. Compose and construct your KMS assignment directly in your workspace, or
work on the contents offline and cut and paste into the workspace later. It is very
Important to check the spelling, grammar, etc. of your page contents. At present
you cannot do this In PBworks. I suggest using Word to compose and check
spelling prior to pasting the content into a PBworks page. You can work on the
pages in any orderthey dont have to be in the same order as they are in the
instructions, but they should have the same headings.

Page 7
8. The wiki is very intuitive. Youll just replace the placeholder text with your
narratives. There is Help, but as a new learner myself, I found that it was pretty
much like using a word processor and template. There will be a special KMS Wiki Help discussion group in WebCT for questions. The following links are very
helpful for learning how to use PBworks.
a. PBworks user manual
b. PBworks support center
9. As you create your workspace, refer to the Knowledge Management System
Grading Criteria included in this assignment. Check yourself against the rubric to
make sure you are performing at an appropriate level. If you are not sure about
elements of the rubric, ask the instructor.
10. Add navigation aids to your wiki. Create a list of links to the six pages in your wiki
and explain how to navigate through your site. Add page links and/or a sidebar.
11. When finished with each weekly assignment (by the date Indicated in the course
schedule) compose a message to the instructor in WebCT Mail, indicating that
the KMS weekly assignment is ready for review. Each weekly assignment (the
first five sections) is worth 40 points (total of 200 points) and will be evaluated
with the KMS Weekly Rubric.
12. At the end of the course when all final revisions are complete please send a
message to the instructor in WebCT Mail, indicating that the KMS Is ready for
final review. The KMS Final Rubric will be used to evaluate your finished wiki.
This review is worth 100 points.
13. Look for instructor feedback in Mail and My Grades and also on your KMS wiki.
14. Congratulate yourself on a job well-done in CIED 7601 and keep in practice on

your wiki development for CIED 7602 and CIED 7603 if you are planning to take
all the courses for the Online Teaching Endorsement.
Knowledge Management System Grading Rubric (Total project is worth 30 % of course
grade).
Up to 200 points will be awarded for the first five weekly assignments (each worth 40
points) and will be evaluated with the weekly review rubric.
Feedback will be given on each weekly submission. If the instructor requests any
revisions please complete this work within one week of the instructor request. Weekly
scores are final and are not increased by completed revisions. The final KMS review
(100 points) will be strongly influenced by the caliber of your work and the completion of
all instructor suggested revisions.
Pages that are revised will re-evaluate during the final KMS review.
The final review is worth 100 points and will be evaluated with the final review rubric.
