ROLLED PRODUCTS (SHEET)

Stainless steel is not a single specific

material it is the name given to a
group of corrosion-resistant steels
containing a minimum of 11%
chromium varying additions of
nickel, molybdenum, titanium,
niobium and other elements may
also be present. The mechanical
properties, corrosion resistance and
behaviour in service of each type of
steel depends upon its composition
and consequently a carefully
considered choice of steel is vital.
Aalco stocks all of the commonly
required forms of stainless steel
including sheet, coil, strip, plate,
bar and sections as well as a full
range of tube, pipe, fittings and
flanges. In addition to a
comprehensive range of standard
products, Aalco branches stock
industry specific items and customer
specials with numerous specialist
products and alloys satisfying the
needs of a broad range of
industries. Aalco also provides a
complete range of processing
services spanning: bar, tube & pipe
cutting; plate processing; coil
processing and surface finishing.

Schedules 5S and 10S wall thicknesses do not permit threading in accordance with ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.

These dimensions and weights do not conform to ANSI/ASME B36.10M.

The suffix S after the schedule number indicates that the pipe dimensions and weight are in compliance with this stainless steel pipe
specification, ANSI/ASME B36.19M-1985, and not the more general ANSI/ASME B36.10M-1995 specification.

Although this specification is applicable to stainless steel, quoted weights are for carbon steel pipe and should be multiplied by 1.014 for
austenitic and duplex steels, or by 0.985 for ferritic and martensitic steels.

This flange is circumferentially welded into the system at its neck which means
that the integrity of the butt welded area can be easily examined by radiography.
The bores of both pipe and flange match, which reduces turbulence and erosion
inside the pipeline. The weld neck is therefore favoured in critical applications

Flange Types

16

A Flange is a method of connecting pipes, valves, pumps and other

equipment to form a pipework system. It also provides easy access for
cleaning, inspection or modification. Flanges are usually welded or
screwed into such systems and then joined with bolts.

Lap Joint
These flanges are always used with either a stub end or taft which is butt welded
to the pipe with the flange loose behind it. This means the stub end or taft
always makes the face. The lap joint is favoured in low pressure applications
because it is easily assembled and aligned. To reduce cost these flanges can be
supplied without a hub and/or in treated, coated carbon steel.

Ring Type Joint

This is a method of ensuring leak proof flange connection at high pressures.
A metal ring is compressed into a hexagonal groove on the face of the flange to
make the seal. This jointing method can be employed on Weld Neck, Slip-on and
Blind Flanges.

Hygienic (also sometimes called

Sanitary) Tubes and Fittings are
used in environments that require a
clean and sanitary flow of fluids.
Applications include food & drinks
processing, breweries, dairies and
pharmaceutical, medical & biotech
plant. All tubes are produced to
ASTM A270 in stainless steel grades
304 and 316, and are usually
supplied in the annealed condition.
Aalco offer three different external
surface finishes on the tubes:
Descaled, Dull Polished and SemiBright Polished. Bright Polished
can also be supplied if required.
Internally, tubes are bead rolled and
free from crevices and bug traps to
eliminate contamination and
facilitate easy cleaning.

If smaller sizes are required, Aalco

offer a range of cold drawn
seamless tubes with a hygienic bore.
For larger sizes, Aalco offer welded
tubes produced to DIN 2463. Aalco
can also supply Pharmaceutical
Quality tubing to ASME BPE 1997
with a highly polished internal
surface finish of <20 Ra and O.D.
surface finish of <30 Ra.
To complement the hygienic tubes,
Aalco supply a range of welding
fittings to BS4825, in grade 316
stainless steel. The fittings are
supplied with a similar finish to the
tubes with which they are intended
to mate. The range includes:
90 & 45 degree elbows
(1800 available upon request)
Concentric & eccentric reducers
Equal, pulled, reducing & swept
tees
Y-pieces and sprayballs.
Aalco also offer a range of Unions
with which to connect the various
tubes together. The most popular
types supplied include:
R.J.T. (Ring Joint Type): A sanitary
fitting, produced to BS 4825
Part 5, primarily used where
tubes are frequently disassembled
for cleaning.
I.D.F. (International Dairy
Federation): Produced to ISO 2853
and BS4825 Part 4. A crevice-free
fitting used where pipelines
remain permanently in place.

S.M.S. (Swedish Metric System):

A Scandinavian fitting used when
tubes require minimal dismantling.
DIN 11851: Popular throughout
Europe, these can be offered in
sizes compatible with metric and
imperial tubes.
DN: Danish Fittings.
S.R.J.T.: A modified RJT, normally
used with larger tubes.
Clamp: Popular in the U.S. and
increasingly so in Europe, the
clamp union offers a rapid, yet
leak-free method of assembling
and disassembling tubes without
the use of a tool.
All unions except for a clamp union
comprise four parts: a nut, male,
liner and seal. Clamp unions
comprise 2 ferrules, a clamp and a
seal. Blanks are available to suit
union parts if there is a requirement
to close off a pipeline.
To complement the range of
hygienic tube and fittings, Aalco
also supply a range of tube-fixings
with which to support pipe systems,
a range of flanges for connecting
tubes if sterility is less critical, and
a broad variety of actuated and
manual valves and plugcocks.
Fabrication facilities are available
to provide customers with nonstandard and bespoke items.

Notes
1 Includes ovality tolerance except for thin wall tube
2

tmin = minimum wall thickness

Ovality = Difference between maximum and minimum OD

Thin wall tube is defined as that with a wall thickness
t0.020 in (0.5 mm) for any OD,
or t2% of OD if OD 2 in (50.8 mm),
or t3% of OD if OD >2 in (50.8 mm)

Or 2.0% of OD, if this gives a larger tolerance value.

HIGH PURITY TUBE & FITTINGS

High Purity tube and fittings are

used in applications where noncontamination and absolute
cleanliness is essential. This includes
pharmaceutical production,
biotechnology and medical &
scientific laboratories as well as food
& drink processing.

HIGH PURITY TUBE & FITTINGS

All items are in type 316L only and

have been polished to give a high
quality, low roughness surface finish.
Aalco and the Amari group are sole
UK & Ireland distributors for the
EGMO range of high purity
products.

EGMO Limited is well established as

a leading international manufacturer
of high purity fittings for use in
critical applications.

EGMO bio-pharm fittings are

fabricated from stainless steel 316L
(1.4404) for sulphur corrosion
resistance, and for carbideprecipitates-free welds. To ensure
smooth automatic welding, weld-on
fittings are produced from special
316L, specified with a controlled
sulphur content of 0.005<S<0.017.

Only bright annealed sanitary

tubes are used, meeting ASTM
A-270/ASTM A-269 requirements
for minimal ovality. Fractional fittings
are produced from cold drawn
bright annealed seamless material.

Ex-mill hot rolled finishes

There are five classes of stainless

steel: Martensitic, Ferritic, Austenitic,
Duplex and Precipitation Hardening.
Martensitic types may be
strengthened and hardened by heat
treatment, but the Ferritic steels,
which in general have lower carbon
and higher Chromium contents, do
not respond in this way.
Ferritic stainless steels contain
chromium usually in the range
11 to 18%. They are magnetic,
have moderate corrosion resistance
and are not susceptible to stress
corrosion. Austenitic stainless steels
contain nickel as well as chromium,
and are sometimes referred to by
the generic title 18/8, i.e. 18%
chromium, 8% nickel, although the
actual composition may vary widely
from these figures. They are nonmagnetic and cannot be hardened
by heat treatment, although they
strain harden rapidly when cold
worked.
All stainless steels except hardened
Martensitic steels are ductile and
therefore can be formed, but the
Austenitic types are outstanding in
this respect. They are also amongst
the most highly corrosion-resistant
materials available to the designer
and engineer. Duplex stainless steels
combine the optimum properties
of austenitic and ferritic types.
They contain 18 - 26% chromium
plus 4.5 to 6.5% nickel and have
good resistance to stress corrosion
cracking. Precipitation hardening
stainless steels may be martensitic,
semi-austenitic or austenitic.
They combine the heat treatability
of normal martensitic grades
with the corrosion resistance of
austenitics. They are available in bar
form for the production of heavy
duty engineering components.

Notes

Market Terms

1D

Hot rolled, heat treated, pickled

Most common hot rolled finish available. Most corrosion resistant

hot rolled finish specified.

Softened and
descaled

1C.

Hot rolled, heat treated, not descaled

Surface covered with mill scale. Finished parts may be suitable for heat
(oxidation) resisting applications as supplied, but should be descaled to
optimise corrosion resistance.

Not commonly
used

1E

Hot rolled, heat treated, mechanically

descaled

Free of mill scale by shot blasting or grinding. This finish can also limit
the crevice corrosion resistance.

Not commonly
used

Finishing Process Route

Notes

Market Terms

Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled,

skin passed

Most common cold rolled finish available. Non-reflective, smooth finish,

good flatness control. Thickness range limited by manufactures' skin passing
rolling capacity.

2B

2D

Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled

Thicker sheet size ranges. Smoothness not as good as 2B, but adequate
for most purposes.

2R

Cold rolled, bright annealed (BA)

Highly reflective 'mirror' finish, very smooth. Often supplied with plastic
coatings for pressings. Manufactured items usually put into service without
further finishing.

BA

Introduction
Surface finishes for stainless steel
sheet (coil, strip) and plates, are
specified in EN 10088-2:1995.
'Stainless steels Technical delivery
conditions for sheet/plate and strip
for general purposes.
The standard identifies both ex-mill
hot and cold rolled finishes and
special finishes, as value added
finishes to achieve specific aesthetic
effects.
Most of the finishes available have
a surface that provides a high
standard of corrosion resistance, up
to the limit of the compositional
potential of the particular grade.
The coarser finishes may limit the
corrosion resistance of the steel in
severe applications, where the
particular grade is operating in
conditions close to the limit of its
corrosion resistance.
In numeric or quantitative terms this
is very difficult to define and is often
a matter of judgement.

EN 10088-2 surface finishes

Table 6 of EN 10088-2 defines
finishes for both

Ex-mill cold rolled finishes

Ex-mill Hot Rolled Finishes (1)

Ex-mill Cold Rolled Finishes (2)
Special Finishes
The definitions of surface finish do
not attempt to express surface finish
in terms of the surface topography
achieved in terms of Ra values.
The standard uses a coding system
based on the manufacturing
process.

2B

2H

Cold rolled, work hardened

'Temper' rolling on austenitic types improves mechanical strength.

Smoothness similar to 2B.

Not commonly
used

2Q

Cold rolled, hardened and tempered,

scale free

Only available on martensitic types (eg 420). Scaling avoided by protective

atmosphere heat treatment or descaling after heat treatment.

Not commonly
used

A full definition is shown in the

standard, with appropriate notes in

Aalco finishes

Surface finish
To precisely define a special finish
for a particular application where a
specific aesthetic texture or
appearance is required usually
involves close consultation with
specialist finishers, as surface
characteristics can vary.
Once the grade of finishing grit has
been defined, the final acceptance
of special finishes is often done by
using reference 'swatch' samples.
