Weights
All weights shown in this publication are for guidance only. They are calculated using nominal
dimensions and scientifically recognised densities. Please note that in practice, the actual weight
can vary significantly from the theoretical weight due to variations in manufacturing tolerances
and compositions.

Plate processing
Coil processing
Our coil processing services cover
decoiling, levelling, slitting, spool
winding, blanking, piercing, notching
and circling as well as polishing and
protective coating. Aluminium and
stainless steel in thicknesses from
0.1mm to 3.0mm with widths up to
2000mm are processed to close
tolerances on a 22 specialist lines
within a dedicated group facility that
is unequalled in Europe.
Surface finishing
A significant percentage of the
stainless steel sheet used today is
supplied with a polished finish.
Aalco has extensive polishing facilities
providing a range of finishes to meet
every application. This includes a full
range of ground finishes as well as
the premium OPTISHEEN finish.
The unique wet-cut OPTISHEEN
process produces a very consistent
high quality surface meeting the
highest food-industry standards.
Aalco supplies many other surfacefinished products including polished
stainless steel plate, coil and tube,
anodised aluminium sheet and
extrusions as well as various
coloured and/or textured coatings.
Quality
Aalco takes great care when
selecting manufacturing sources for
its products. Every mill is subjected
to careful scrutiny and must meet
a schedule of quality control
requirements. Therefore, all products
supplied by Aalco conform to the
relevant BS or international standard.
A certificate of conformity or analysis
can be supplied on request.
Aalco branches operate a quality
manual designed to ISO9000/2000
requirements. Many vendor
approvals and bespoke quality
control systems are operated
through individual Aalco branches.
People
Exceptional customer service starts
with people. Flexible people, whom
customers can trust and rely upon
to provide quality advice and
informed product knowledge in a
friendly manner.
Aalco attracts, develops and retains
high quality people. Continuous
development of their skills includes
an in-house product-training
programme giving them a complete
understanding of the full range.

Schedules 5S and 10S wall thicknesses do not permit threading in accordance with ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.
The suffix S after the schedule number indicates that the pipe dimensions and weight are in compliance with this stainless steel pipe
specification, ANSI/ASME B36.19M-1985, and not the more general ANSI/ASME B36.10M-1995 specification.
Although this specification is applicable to stainless steel, quoted weights are for carbon steel pipe and should be multiplied by 1.014 for
austenitic and duplex steels, or by 0.985 for ferritic and martensitic steels.

This flange is circumferentially welded into the system at its neck which means
that the integrity of the butt welded area can be easily examined by radiography.
The bores of both pipe and flange match, which reduces turbulence and erosion
inside the pipeline. The weld neck is therefore favoured in critical applications

Lap Joint
These flanges are always used with either a stub end or taft which is butt welded
to the pipe with the flange loose behind it. This means the stub end or taft
always makes the face. The lap joint is favoured in low pressure applications
because it is easily assembled and aligned. To reduce cost these flanges can be
supplied without a hub and/or in treated, coated carbon steel.

Surface covered with mill scale. Finished parts may be suitable for heat
(oxidation) resisting applications as supplied, but should be descaled to
optimise corrosion resistance.

Free of mill scale by shot blasting or grinding. This finish can also limit
the crevice corrosion resistance.

2D
Thicker sheet size ranges. Smoothness not as good as 2B, but adequate
for most purposes.

Highly reflective 'mirror' finish, very smooth. Often supplied with plastic
coatings for pressings. Manufactured items usually put into service without
further finishing.

Introduction
Surface finishes for stainless steel
sheet (coil, strip) and plates, are
specified in EN 10088-2:1995.
'Stainless steels Technical delivery
conditions for sheet/plate and strip
for general purposes.
The standard identifies both ex-mill
hot and cold rolled finishes and
special finishes, as value added
finishes to achieve specific aesthetic
effects.
Most of the finishes available have
a surface that provides a high
standard of corrosion resistance, up
to the limit of the compositional
potential of the particular grade.
The coarser finishes may limit the
corrosion resistance of the steel in
severe applications, where the
particular grade is operating in
conditions close to the limit of its
corrosion resistance.
In numeric or quantitative terms this
is very difficult to define and is often
a matter of judgement.

Aalco finishes
Surface finish
To precisely define a special finish
for a particular application where a
specific aesthetic texture or
appearance is required usually
involves close consultation with
specialist finishers, as surface
characteristics can vary.
Once the grade of finishing grit has
been defined, the final acceptance
of special finishes is often done by
using reference 'swatch' samples.

Note: Finishes can be subjective and agreement between Aalco and the customer is needed, often by using samples.
