Narrative Remains

An exploration into the

relationship between words and making

Saturday 18 January - Sunday 23 March

Selected by Peter Florence, Director, Hay Festivals and Amanda Popham, renowned ceramicist and Member
of the Devon Guild, this exhibition shows the work of regional, national and international artist-makers,
working in disciplines of contemporary craft, who are directly influenced by words.
Narrative Remains explores the relationships between stories, poems, prose or quotes and the chosen
makers work. The exhibition shows the imagination engendered by words and stories through the creation
of contemporary craft. Work on show includes installations, photography, print, collage, enamel, ceramics
and textiles. In these works the narrative emerges in the spaces between the pieces as well as between
the viewer and the work, opening up more possibilities for extending the storytelling.
Exhibitors: Sonja Andrew, Sue Brown, Clare Goddard, Tina Hill, Effie Jessop, Iris Milward, Jitka Palmer,
Donna Rumble-Smith, Trudie Timlin Brown, Alex Valentine and Aine Venables.

Beyond the Book

An exhibition of artists who use books as their medium
Saturday 5 April - Sunday 8 June
The artists in this exhibition examine the book as a cultural and a
symbolic object, and as a container of history, narrative and memory.
What happens when artists consider the matter of books?
The conventional book became a household object after
the invention of printing, and has only recently been
rivalled by the computer screen and electronic text.
This exhibition sets out to explore the transition of
books through a variety of formats, from
photographs to sculptures, installations and jewellery.
This exhibition will examine the broad spectrum of
work currently being created by artists and designers
who are using books to deconstruct and describe their
qualities, both aesthetically and conceptually.
All of the artists in the exhibition share an interest in
memory, language and narrative. They use books as a way
of filtering their ideas.
The exhibition demonstrates how diverse the Book Art
movement is in the UK by showcasing British-based talent,
and illustrating the notions and narratives behind the making.
Alongside the why, the exhibition will examine the process,
material and nature of production.

Materials Matter

A Devon Guild of Craftsmen Membership Exhibition

Saturday 21 June - Sunday 7 September
The annual Members exhibition is an important one for our Membership as it is
an opportunity for them to produce their best new work. It is also unique in the
Guild exhibition calendar as the work on display has been chosen by a group
from within the Membership.
This years exhibition will take the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of
materials chosen and used by the Members of the Guild. The exhibition will
inform visitors that materials do indeed matter to these makers. Through
individual statements, information panels and by having examples of raw materials
on display the exhibition will tell stories of why each maker has chosen a certain
material. Perhaps it is because they live where a material grows, like willow, or is
found naturally, like clay, or used as a by-product of an industry they are associated
with such as wool from sheep or wood from tree surgery. By visiting this
exhibition you will gain a unique insight into a selection of our leading craftspeople
from the South West and find out why Materials Matter to them.
