Install Guide Exchange Server 2007 on Windows Server 2008 Active Directory
By Kefa Rabah, krabah@globalopenversity.org Dec 17, 2009 SerengetiSys Labs

Introduction
It is more challenging to install Exchange Server 2007 (ES 2k7) than any other Microsoft
product. A list, as in shopping a-like list, will not be good enough; if you want to win the
battle to install Exchange 2007, what you need is a plan, as in a general plotting a military
campaign. However, once you get your planning into project management like scenario –
then installing Exchange 2007 is as brisk as taking a beach-walk on cool sunny evening. In
this install guide we will concern ourselves with installing ES 2k7 on Windows 2007 Active
Directory Domain Controller (DC).

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is a messaging and collaborative software product

developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Servers line of server products and is
widely used by enterprises using Microsoft infrastructure solutions. Exchange's major
features consist of electronic mail, calendaring, contacts and tasks; support for mobile and
web-based access to information; and support for data storage.

For most businesses today, e-mail is the mission-critical communications tool that allows
their people to produce the best results. This greater reliance on e-mail has increased the
number of messages sent and received, the variety of work getting done, and even the
speed of business itself – and of course the anytime anywhere common with today’s’ global
businesses. Amid this change, employee expectations have also evolved. Today, employees
look for rich, efficient access—to e-mail, calendars, attachments, contacts, and more—no
matter where they are or what type of device they are using – i.e., the anywhere anytime
everywhere access to network resources.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 has been designed specifically to meet these challenges and
address the needs of the different groups who have a stake in the messaging system. The
new capabilities of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 deliver the advanced protection your
company demands, the anywhere access your people want, and the operational efficiency
you, in IT, need.

Once you have planned, designed, implemented and deployed a robust messaging server
like Exchange Server 2007, and its up and running – you can go ahead and push the
boundaries of your messaging infrastructure to enterprise level e.g., building small to large
messaging server.

In this guide, we present a step-by-step installation and configuration of Exchange Server

2007 on Windows Server 2008 Active Directory. We’ll also show you how to add new
mailboxes using both the Exchange Management Console (EMC) GUI, and Exchange
Management Shell (PowerShell) command-line. Also to be shown is how to install & set up a
PowerGUI to help you with provisioning large numbers of new users’ mailbox, thereby
avoiding dealing with the dreaded scripting complexity. You’ll also learn how to add Telnet
client Feature for testing your Exchange 2007 SMTP. I’ll also show you how to configure and
use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your emails form anywhere, anytime. We’ll also
teach you how configure Hub Transport Send & Receive Connectors. Finally, you’ll also learn

how to troubleshoot a failed Exchange server setup due to "MS Exchange “Transport Failed
To Reach Status 'Running” On This Server...", and how to solve the problem. In this guide,
all the work was done on VMware machines. On completion of following this lab training with
this install guide, you should be able to reach an Exchange Server 2007 competency level of
advance basic to intermediate level depending on how much effort and time you’ve allocated
for the training. And capability to at least plan, design, implement and deploy an Exchange
Server 2007 in SMB to Medium business environment.

Part 1: Install Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

In this step-by-step install guide it’s assumed that you have already installed Windows
Server 2008 AD or know how to install Win 2008 AD. If not then head to Scribd.com and
check out an excellent article by the same author entitled "Install Guide Windows Server 2008
Active Director", to get you started.

1. Our Win2k8 AD DC configuration is as follows:

• Server: server01.rabahtech.com
• Domain: rabahtech.com
• IP Address: 192.168.83.6

2. Now check that DNS server setup is configured and running correctly, to test this issue
NSLOOKUP command as follows:

C:\>nslookup rabahtech.com
Server: server01.rabahtech.com
Address: 192.168.83.6

Name: rabahtech.com
Address: 192.168.83.6

As you can see our DC is able to perform name services lookup and report back
correctly its status.

Part 2: Prerequisite Required by MS Exchange 2008

Prior to installing the MS Exchange 2007 (ES2k7) on Windows Server 2008 – there are
certain Windows Server prerequisites: Server Roles and Features that must be installed
before you can install Exchange 2007. Windows Server 2008 is much "lighter" on a default
install than Windows Server 2003, with fewer components deployed by default.

There two methods you can use to meet the default install requirements i.e., adding the
Roles and Features – that are required to build multi-role Exchange Server. You can use the
GUI method or alternatively you can build a batch file to do the job for you. In this install
guide, we’re going to build a batch file containing the required commands, instead of adding
each feature through the GUI by hand. The only reboot required would be after the
installation of Active Directory Domain Services remote management tools. Listing 1 show
our batch file:
