HECKER QUOTE

The church has already entered on this path of presenting more

intimately and clearly her inward and divine side to the world, for her
deepest and most active thinkers are actually engaged, more or less
consciously, in this providential work. (The Church and the Age, 1887)
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you
believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP,
at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF LATERAN BASILICA IN

ROME is celebrated this Sunday. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the

cathedral of Rome (the Popes cathedral) built in the time of Constantine

324. Constantine had received the land from the wealthy Lateran family.
Even though that particular cathedral suffered fire, earthquakes and the
ravages of war it remained the place were popes were consecrated until the
14th century. In 1646 Pope Innocent X had the present cathedral built. The
tower is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John
the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the Church.

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome

Sunday, November 9, 2014

Pa storal Co rn er
Kyle Eilenfeldt, office administrator at Saint Andre Bisset, took me on a tour of what is called the Downtown Chapel.
Its staffed by the Holy Cross priests. Each day 125 people are served breakfast. People are not rushed through, but
are allowed to relax and enjoy their meal. I was amazed at how respectfully the staff treats every person that crosses
their doorstep. I also saw a very well developed basement that has rooms full of clean clothing hanging on racks, a
washing machine and dryer, artwork done by the homeless, a barber shop, and a quiet room where guests can sit and
meditate away from the noise of the streets and of the dining room. The only rules no food, no drink, no cell
phones. Just quiet. The Downtown chapel is a great asset of the city of Portland.
I have been realizing what a treasure we have at Saint Philip Neri as well. Our Open House/Open Sanctuary events
have been successful. Half a dozen or eight staff and parishioners host the event each Sunday night. Two or three
new people have come each time. Some of the new people end up becoming welcomers the next week. We have
docent- led tours, live music, conversation, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and food. The dim lighting and
candle light create a wonderfully meditative atmosphere in the church.
Please invite anyone you know whether Catholic or not to come check us out on Sunday evenings from 5p to
7pm. It runs through November 23rd. And if you would like to be a greeter or a docent wed love to have you.
In todays Gospel Jesus reflects on how well we handle possessions and responsibilities. He says The person who
is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small
matters is also dishonest in great ones. If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you
what is yours?
If we think about Saint Philip Neri as a common possession of all of us who come and make our spiritual home
here, we realize that we are stewards of this treasure for the common good. It is meant for people that are not here
yet. It is meant for the spiritually homeless. To be a good steward means to welcome new people. And not just
welcome people that happen to come, but to invite people who have not thought of coming. And not just invite but
first initiate contact with people, as missionaries do.
Mayor Ed Koch said in a public forum to Cardinal Dolan of New York: when immigrants come to the New York
harbor they meet two ladies who become very important in their lives: One is Lady Liberty (the statue of Liberty), the
other is Holy Mother Church. I hope that Saint Philip fits the image of Holy Mother Church who reaches out and
embraces the immigrants to the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood.
