ABSTRACT: Sixty eight crosses were made in line x tester design utilizing 17 female and 4 male parents
of wide genetic base to ascertain the performance of parents for TPS attributes. Among these cross MS/
91-1326 x EX/A-680-16 for berry set, MF-I x TPS-13 for seeds per berry and OP-1 x EX/A-680-16 for 100-seed
weight were found promising. Parental lines Kufri Sutlej, JX-118, DP-9904, JTH/C-107 and MF-I were good
females and all four testers were good males for TPS production.
In potato breeding, flower production and berry setting are two basic requisites for making desired crosses.
The use of TPS as a means of propagation has enhanced the importance of attributes like pollen fertility, seed per
berry and 100-seed weight (Gaur and Pandey, 1990). Genetic constitution of male and female parental lines
determines the TPS quality and quantity (Upadhya et al., 1984). The present investigation was undertaken to study
the performance of potato parental lines for duration of flowering, pollen fertility, berry setting, number of seeds per
berry and 100-seed weight, and to identify the promising crosses with desirable attributes for TPS production.
The study was carried out at Potato Research Station, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University
(SDAU), Deesa (24o-5N latitude and 72o E longitude, 189m amsl) during rabi season of 2002-03. Potato does not
flowers at Deesa because of short days prevailing during the crop season, thus flowering was induced by
prolonging photoperiod by 4 to 6 hours with 200 lux from sodium vapour lamps. Crosses were made in line x tester
design utilizing 17 females and four males of wide genetic base. Minimum of 10 bunches (40-50 flower buds) were
pollinated per cross. Data were recorded on progenies for duration of flowering (days), viable pollen grains (%),
berry setting (%), number of seeds per berry and 100-seed weight (mg). Performance of male and female parents
was calculated by taking average of each parents performance over crosses with four male and 17 female parents,
respectively.
The duration of flowering ranged from 41.33 days (OP-1 and JX-371) to 62.67 days (MF-1) in female parents,
whereas all four male parents had around 63 days flowering duration. MF-1, Kufri Sutlej, TPS-13, EX/A-680-16,
JEX/A-717 and JEX/A-592 had a longer flowering duration. All female parents had around 50% viable pollen grains.
Among the pollen parents, maximum percent of viable pollen grains were in JEX/A-717 (91.22%) followed by EX/
A-680-16 (89.73%), TPS-13 (75.04) and JEX/A-592 (67.93%) (Table 1).
The extent of berry setting ranged from 22.08% (OP-1 x TPS-13) to 95.03% (MS/91-1326 x EX/A-680-16).
Maximum berry setting among females was in Kufri Sutlej (90.14%) followed by MS/91-1326 (88.75%), MS/89-60
(83.66%), MS/92-3128 (83.46%) and JX-118 (79.03%), while among males it was maximum in JEX/A-572 (72.62%)
followed by EX/A-680-16 (71.68%) and TPS-13 (69.45%) (Table 1).
A large variation has been found for number of seeds per berry (Pandey and Gupta, 1995). In the present
study number of seeds per berry ranged from 15.53 (OP-1 x EX/A-680-16) to 294.35 (MF-I x TPS-13). Among
female parents maximum seeds per berry were in MF-I (253.30) followed by JX-371 (245.52), JX-118 (242.30) and
DSP-7 (236.62) (Table 1). Among the pollen parents, maximum seeds per berry were in JEX/A-717 (213.70)
followed by EX/A-680-16 (181.17), TPS-13 (177.31) and JEX/A-592 (173.67).
The 100-seed weight in various crosses ranged from 23.31mg (Kufri Pushkar x TPS-13) to 128.78mg (OP-1
x EX/A 680-16). Among the females OP-1 (98.41mg) produced maximum 100-seed weight followed by Kufri Sutlej
(78.86mg), DSP-19 (77.64mg), JTH/C-107 (72.29 mg) and MF-I (69.84mg).
Crosses MS/91-1326 x EX/A-680-16, MF-1 x TPS-13 and OP-1 x EX/A-680-16 were promising for berry
setting, seeds per berry and 100-seed weight, respectively.
