Indians built the First Apartment House

Modern people have built magnificent apartment houses in their cities.

The credit for developing the first apartment houses in this country must go to the
Indians. The Iroquois of the Northwest used one type of apartment house. The
building was divided into rows of separated rooms and one family lived in each
room.
It was the Pueblos in the Southwest who developed large apartment buildings
which in their design were very much like those we see in our cities today. The
earliest apartment was built in valleys. Later, the Pueblos built their apartments in
other valleys. Regardless of where each building was placed, it was planned to
houses several families.
Gradually the little villages of Pueblos, whether in valleys or on cliffs, began to
disappear. It was during this period that these remarkable Indians built their
highest apartment houses.
Many of the apartment houses of this period had from 20 to 1,000 rooms. The
materials used in making these houses were stones struck together with adobe
mud. Frequently they were plastered and the rooms were whitewashed.
Not all of the rooms in these big apartment houses were used as homes for people.
The upper rooms were used for living, sleeping, corn drying and corn grinding.
Cooking was done outdoors on the roofs or in spaces between blocks of rooms.
The present-day Pueblo Indians live to New Mexico for the most part, although
there are a few tribes in Arizona. Many are farmers who work industriously in
their fields. Other devote their time to making beautiful pottery. Still others weave
colorful blankets and make attractive baskets and silver jewelry.
The modern Pueblo Indians live in picturesque adobe homes. They wear the same
kind of clothes as people who live in other parts of the United States. Many of
them have automobiles, radios, and television sets.
There are two ways in which most of the Pueblos havent changed. They still
retain their social system of living in communities. They also still believe firmly
in their native religion, which has been modifgied only in regard to a few details
throughout their long history.

How moths are coping with pollution

1. There are certain moths whose color serves to protect them, which are
changing their color to match the polluted backgrounds on which they rest.
These moths usually rest on tree trunks that in their original state have a
pale gray or green appearance because of lichens that grow on them.
Accordingly, during recent years large numbers of moths have become
dark or black in color instead of pale green.
2. The increase in dark moths is attributed to air pollution. Now the dark
colored moth is almost invisible as he rests on a dark colored moths are
increasing in polluted areas, and light colored moths are decreasing. As a
result it is possible in the future that, in polluted areas, all moths will be
dark colored
