RAD to Unveil Complete Gateway Solution for

Optimising Cellular and Enterprise Networks

Network Optimisation and Superior Voice Compression Technologies
Reduce Cost of Expensive Satellite and Microwave Links
RAD Data Communications will unveil at West and Central AfricaCom 2009, which will
be held in Abuja, Nigeria 17th-18th June, a complete set of gateways that support 2G and
3G cellular backhaul over landline, satellite and microwave radio links.
RADs Vmux-405, Vmux-425 and Vmux-445 GSM Abis optimisation gateways optimise
GSM Abis (BSC-to-BTS) traffic and transport it over an E1 or 10/100BaseT or Gigabit
Ethernet link. Using these devices, cellular operators are able to lower their demand for
bandwidth and improve the utilisation of their access infrastructure, especially over
expensive satellite and microwave links. The Vmux-445 will also support Ater
optimisation.
RADs Vmux family also includes trunking solutions. The Vmux-2120, for example, is a
fully redundant 3G media gateway that provides compressed voice transmission over
TDM and IP networks. It significantly reduces satellite bandwidth consumption and
lowers leased line costs for cellular operators, carriers and call centers. Employing
powerful voice compression algorithms as well as RADs patented TDMoIP
pseudowire technology, the Vmux-2120 3G media gateway can compress up to 16 full
E1 circuits over a single E1 line or IP uplink. The Vmux-2120 guarantees optimal
bandwidth utilisation while maintaining toll quality voice, lowering both operating
(OpEx) and capital expenses (CapEx). At the same time, all legacy services and signaling
are maintained. It is a fully redundant unit and also features uplink redundancy, load
sharing and an echo canceller.
By optimising the Abis interface, the Vmux-405, Vmux-425 and Vmux-445 complete
RADs cellular offering by complementing our Vmux-2120 and Gmux-2000 voice
trunking gateways, which optimise and compress the E (MSC-to-PSTN) interface, notes

Toby Korall, Senior Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications. RAD,
therefore, offers a complete solution that reduces OpEx while enabling an expansion in
network capacity.
Clock Recovery over any Transmission Network
The Vmux-405 connects up to three E1 digital ports over a single E1 or up to four E1s
over Ethernet, while the Vmux-425 connects up to six E1 digital ports over an E1 or
Ethernet and the Vmux-445 an impressive 63 E1s over E1/STM-1 or Gigabit Ethernet. A
single Vmux at the BSC side can operate with up to 20 remote units at the BTS over a
TDM or Ethernet/IP/MPLS packet switched network (PSN) in a point-to-multipoint
application. Clock recovery over any transmission network enables the BTS to
synchronise timing with the BSC without a GPS, which is a critical advantage since
PSNs do not provide timing mechanisms of their own. A Smart Packet Drop (SPD)
mechanism, moreover, enables additional optimisation of voice traffic by discarding nonessential voice frames without any affect on voice quality.
All of RADs Vmux products conform to all relevant industry standards and interoperate
with equipment from major base station system vendors.
