The Octave of Christmas ends on the first day of the new year, which is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, venerated as the Mother
of God. The Gospel reminds us that she "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Lk2:19). so she did in Bethlehem,
on Golgotha at the foot of the cross, and on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended in the Upper Room. And so
she does today too. The Mother of God and of human beings keeps in her heart all of humanity's problems, great and difficult,
and meditates upon them. The Alma Redemptoris Mater walks with us and guides us with motherly tenderness towards the
future. Thus she helps humanity cross all the "thresholds" of the years, the centuries, the millenniums, by sustaining their hope in
the One who is the Lord of history.

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a
season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate
Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.

19th March 2015 Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Solomnity)
Not a single word of his is recorded in Sacred Scripture and yet St Joseph is one of the greatest and most popular saints, largely because of his humility and closeness to Our Lord. He died before the beginning of Jesus's
public ministry and since he probably died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, is venerated as patron of a good death. Blessed Pius IX named him patron of the universal church and Saint John XXIII added his name to the

Thursday of the 4th week of Eastertide or Saint Pius V, Pope
We know that Christ has truly risen from the dead. Yes indeed! This is the fundamental core of our profession of faith;
this is the cry of victory that unites us all today. And if Jesus is risen, and is therefore alive, who will ever be able to deprive us of the love of Him who conquered hatred and overcame death? The Easter proclamation spreads
throughout the world with the joyful song of the Alleluia. Let us sing it with our lips, and let us sing it above all with our hearts and lives, with the manner of life that is "unleavened", that is to say, simple, humble and fruitful in
good works. The Risen One goes before and He accompanies us along the paths of the world. He is our hope, He is the true peace of the world. (Pope

St Thomas (first century), called "the twin", is chiefly remembered for doubting the reality of the resurrection until he saw
the Lord for himself. Once he was satisfied, he made a heartfelt profession of faith: "MY Lord and my God". St Thomas,
who probably suffered martyrdom as a result of preaching the Gospel in India, comforts us when our faith is weak,
encourages us to persevere and demonstrates that "every doubt can lead to an outcome brighter than any uncertainty".

The Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor came to strengthen the faith of the disciples, for trying times ahead: the
Son of Man would be put to death and all that the human eye could see was weakness, humiliation, and suffering.
Beyond the shame of the cross, however, is the light and glory of Easter, and it is this that the Transfiguration reveals. It
shows the disciples and us, Christ's divinity He who is Light from Light anticipates the glory of Heaven.

The Birth of Mary painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio
Mon 21
Tue 22
Nothing is known for sure about the details of the Blessed' Virgin's birth. Even her parents , traditionally known a St
Joachim and St Anne, are not mentioned in Sacred Scripture. Today's feast originated in the East, probably during the
sixth century, and was later introduced to the West. A French legend tells of a man hearing angels singing on the night
of the 8th September and being told that the Virgin Mary had been born on that night. Her earthly birth is celebrated (like
that of St John the Baptist) because it announced to the world the coming of Jesus, the beginning of the New Covenant.

The Gospel from Matthew proposes to us precisely the account of Jesus's birth. However the Evangelist introduces it Mon 28

with a summary of genealogy, which he sets out at the beginning as a prologue. Here the full evidence of Mary's role in Tue 29

the salvation history stands out: Mary's being is totally relative to Christ and in particular to his Incarnation. "Jacob the

fertile from within, causing the most beautiful fruit of creative and redeeming work to develop the humble Virgin of
Nazareth. Then the Evangelist brings on the stage the figure of Joseph, his inner drama, his robust faith and his exemplary rectitude. Behind Joseph's thoughts and deliberations is his love of God and his firm determination to
obey him. But how is it possible not to feel that Joseph's distress, hence his prayers and his decision were motivated at the same time by esteem and love for his betrothed? God's beauty and that of Mary are inseparable in
Joseph's heart; he knows that there can be no contradiction between them; he seeks the answer in God and finds it in the light of the Word and of the Holy Spirit: "The Virgin shall be with child and give birth to a son, and they
shall call him Emmanuel (which means, God with us)".
(Pope Benedict XVI)
