The Masthead

Skyline

Main Image

The masthead NME is the title of

the magazine it is on every cover of
every magazine they print. This is
because it is the magazines brand.
The masthead is easily recognisable
and the audience can spot it easily.
The masthead is in the top left
corner of the cover as it follows the
rule of thirds which is a codes and
convention of a magazine.

The skyline 16 page autumn

tour special is at the top of
the page as it draws the
reader in. It is in a bold font
so it stands out amongst
other writing on the cover.
The fact is it a special
makes it more unique and
makes the audience want it
more.

The main image is of a musician. This musician is on

the cover of the magazine as it references to the
most important article in the magazine. The
musician is looking directly at the audience, this is
direct address it makes the magazine more
personal to the reader and helps sales as it
connects the readers and the magazine more.

Layout
The layout doesnt
follow the typical
rule of thirds other
than the placing of
the masthead. The
main image is not
in middle where (if
following the rule
of thirds) it should
be. The main
image is not a
medium close up
which is the typical
code and conetion
for a main image.

From looking at the cover of

the magazine we can tell
that it is targeted at young
people (16-30). The colour
scheme of the magazine is
red white and black these
connote masculinity this
lets us know that they are
targeting males more than
females. The price of the
magazine is 2.95 this is
relatively affordable and
signifies that the target
audience would be of
working class. The genre of
music is generally
white/Caucasian so NME
would also target
white/Caucasian

Main cover line

The main cover line is
considerably bigger than the
other cover lines this is
because it is a code and
convention of a magazine.
The main cover line relates
to the main image, usually
giving an insight into the
relevant article. This cover
line is a quotation from the
article. This will usually be a
quotation that intrigues the
audience to make them
want to read the full article.

Puff
A puff is
commonly used to
promote a special
offer or freebie
included in the
magazine. NME
have used this to
promote the
reunion of the
band Pavement
this is possibly
because they think
it will boost sales
due to readers
being fans of the
band

Target Audience

Barcode + Price
The barcode is a necessity for a front cover as it is law and otherwise the reader cannot buy the
magazine. The placement of the barcode is in the bottom left hand corner so it isnt in the way of
anything and also is a clever way of using up space. The price is in a very small font so that the reader
doesnt pay attention to it that much and doesnt make them think twice about buying the magazine.
