Overview
Title: Tech Insider: 3D Printing for Machine Design
Date: Thursday, November 06, 2014
Time: 02:00 PM Eastern Standard Time
Duration: 1 hour

Summary
Thursday, 6 November 2014 2:00 PM EST, 11:00 AM PT, 18:00 UTC/GMT
Medical device manufacturer Worxsimple is using dozens of 3D printed end-use parts in their
automated machines. Built on printers such as the Stratasys Objet24 Desktop 3D printer, these parts
include brackets, guards, and other custom parts that cannot be machined using traditional methods.
Using the affordable and easy-to-operate Objet24 printer to create 3D printed parts allows for rapid
part evolution, which improves not only machine designs, but profit margins as well.
Traditionally manufactured metal and plastic parts dont offer the same low cost and easy to produce
option that 3D printing can provide. This presentation will discuss how to move beyond using 3D
printers for only prototyping needs and toward broader applications of using 3D printed parts in
machine design and manufacture of final machine components.
This presentation will discuss the following:
Component design to leverage the printer capabilities
Material selection for fixture applications
Design techniques to improve the cost of your printed components
Post print processing techniques to accommodate your designs needs
Aesthetics of printed parts
Scheduling advantages of 3D printing your machine components
Cost advantages of 3D printing your machine components
Key Take-Aways:
Observe the ease of use and accuracy of the 3D Printer
Learn how to deal with a smaller print envelope for larger components
Learn of potential uses of 3D parts for your machines
Learn techniques for tailoring the design of your components to 3D printing

Worxsimple, LLC (Worxsimple), is an Original Equipment Manufacturer and Engineering Consultation
Firm. Worxsimple designs and manufactures custom automation and equipment for manufacturing
processes. The primary focus is producing equipment and assembly systems used in the medical
device industry. Examples of machines produced by Worxsimple include: Table-Top Fixturing, Free
Standing Automation, U-Shaped Work Cells with Quick Change Tooling and Kanban Systems,
Cognex Vision Inspection Systems and Leak Test Inspection Systems.
SPEAKER: David (Dave) S. Baker, President/Owner, Worxsimple, LLC
Mr. Baker has more than 20 years of engineering experience. He is a mechanical
engineer by training (BME, Auburn University), and has worked in a variety of
industries including automotive, non-woven fabrics, and medical devices. His work
has ranged from engineering design in his early career to plant management and
operations capacities more recently. He has been involved in both plant start-ups
and plant shutdowns; off-shore process migration; design, development and
installations of numerous production lines; and creation of hundreds of work cells
and process systems. In 2006, Mr. Baker began Worxsimple with the initial focus
on Lean Manufacturing consultation. Since that time, the company has evolved
into an operation with 10 employees focusing on system design, equipment
manufacture and rapid prototyping for the medical device industry.
SPEAKER: Bruce Bradshaw, Director of Marketing North America
Bruce leads Stratasys Marketing efforts in North America. His experience in
product marketing, product management, communication and messaging have
helped position Stratasys as the leading 3D printer solution in the additive
manufacturing market. Bruce is often an author of articles in leading industry
publications such as Desktop Engineering, Product Development and Design
World and is often a featured speaker at events such as SME, PTC Live,
SolidWork World and more. He brings more than 20 years experience of
knowledge and expertise in technology, marketing and over positioning for
organizations such as Stratasys.
MODERATOR: Doug McCormick
IEEE Spectrum Tech Talk contributor Douglas McCormick is a New York Citybased freelance writer and communications consultant specializing in technology
and life science. He has been editor or editorial director of such publications as
PM360 (for healthcare marketers), BioTechniques (for molecular biology
researchers), Pharmaceutical Technology, and Nature Publishing Companys
Bio/Technology (now called Nature Biotechnology). He was founder, CEO, and
CTO of Physician Verification Services (an internet based healthcare marketing
start-up) and, earlier, corporate director of scientific communications at SmithKline
Beecham and computer science editor at Hayden Book Company.
