South Hall Expansion Tabled

If you have been part of the congregational survey, attended the
congregational breakfast, or volunteered for one of our South Hall outreach
ministries you know that the programs housed there are making a huge
impact on lives but have also outgrown the building. The Nashville Food
Project serves over 600 meals a week to Nashvilles poor and homeless
in seven neighborhoods.EveryTuesdayandThursdaynight 75 or more
gather for AA meetings, and everyFridaynight from November through
March dedicated Woodmonters host 12 homeless guests for three meals
and a warm bed through Room in the Inn.In addition, every Monday the
Nashville Pipes and Drums hold band practice while other groups also use
the building for a variety of purposes.
These ministries, and others, ranked just behind worship in importance
in our congregational survey. At the congregational breakfast, the idea
of a modest expansion to the building was presented and a committee
enlisted to explore the possibilities. A plan was developed which
benefited all South Hall ministries by providing the vital additional space
needed to accommodate the groups. However, when the pricing came
in,it became an estimated$400,000 project, much higher than anyone
had imagined. One of the most significant expenses was a requirement
by metro codes to make significant improvements to the entire building.
This amounted to over $130,000 of the total cost. By way of comparison,
if we were to simply tear down and replacethe existing square footage
and add the modest amount proposed, the cost would be at least
$1,500,000.If we were to redesignand replace the existing building for
these programs it would be larger, increasing the cost even more.
At a called board meeting on November 3rd, after almost two hours of
discussion, the board voted to table the project. It was felt that, although
the addition and renovations would be highly beneficial, the $400,000

price tag was too

much to tackle at this
time.Without up-front
pledges and gifts, it
is not a responsible
move.Although we are
tabling the expansion
for now, the board is
continuing to wrestle
with solutions to our
space challenges; David Conrad and Thom Schuyler are convening teams
to identify specific limited alternatives that significantly improve the
facility and enhance our outreach ministries.
We appreciate all the serious planning and work that has gone into this
process.Although the initial outcome is disappointing, we will continue to
provide space for these ministries and care for those Christ calls us to serve.
If anyone has questions about the project, please dont hesitate to call
or e-mail me.
Yours in Christ,

Cyril Stewart

The Rebirthing of God

One of the exciting things about being a Christian
is that it always opens you to new ideas, new ways
of thinking, and new ways of experiencing God
and Gods love in this world. Today, after more
than forty years in ministry, I am very excited and
passionate about something new Im discovering.
Its called Celtic Spirituality.
....My wife Anne has been familiar with (and
into) Celtic Spirituality for a long time. In fact,
our relationship got started when I was showing her my cross collection
from all over the world. I noticed a box that had another cross in it and
I said, Lets see what this is. It turned out to be a Celtic Cross and when
she saw it, she exclaimed, Thats my very favorite cross! I asked her if she
wanted it, and as they say the rest is history.
Little did I know that three years later the Celtic Cross would come to
have such great meaning to me. The Celtic Cross has both a cross symbol
and a circle symbol pointing to the way of Christ and the interrelatedness
of all things. The cross and the circle share the same center pointing to the
fact that Christ and creation spring forth from the same Source, which is the
heart of God.
In 2015 I plan to offer a Wednesday night class on Celtic Spirituality.
This class will use as a main source a book by John Philip Newell entitled
The Rebirthing of God. We will have copies of this book available in the
book store after the beginning of the New Year. In a time when dramatic
changes are taking place in Western Christianity, Celtic Spirituality offers
pg. 2

by Roy Stauffer

a fresh stirring of the Spirit among us and a deeper understanding of God

for us. The chapters of this book, which will be the topic for many of the class
sessions, are:
Reconnecting with the Earth
Coming back into relationship with the sacredness of the earth.
Reconnecting with Compassion
The courage to see, feel, and act compassionately.
Reconnecting with the Light
Looking for the Light of God which is at the heart of all life.
Reconnecting with the Journey
Traveling beyond the bounds of our own religious inheritance.
Reconnecting with Spiritual Practice
Learning to experience the Sacred, rather than just believe in the Sacred.
Reconnecting with Nonviolence
Learning soul-force in a world of violence and brute-force.
Reconnecting with the Unconscious
Learning to access the depths of the unconscious, especially
through dreams, myth, and the imagination.
Reconnecting with Love
Learning how to truly connect with God, ourselves, and others.
....Watch for further announcements about this upcoming class after
Christmas. I look forward to spending time with those who are truly
interested in deeper Spirituality.
- Roy

November 10th, 2014

This summer and fall have been busy for me. Ive been traveling a lot, bringing songs and stories and carrying my guitar from
Southern California to northeastern Delaware, from south Texas up to Lake Michigan. Its been quite an exciting few months.
Yesterday, I was with Stephen in the Sonoran Desert, admiring the saguaro cactus forests. Today, Im in a Tennessee thunderstorm,
our sugar maple tree dropping leaves like rainfall.
The world is full of all kinds of beauty, isnt it? And yet, too often, I think, we act like we want everyone to share the same
definition of what makes us beautiful.
The desert landscape couldnt be more different from a thunderstorm, but both are stunningly beautiful.
Friends, dont be fooled by the narrow definition of beauty that marketers are selling us. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, in
smells and sensations - all of this big, beautiful world waiting for us to discover it, to enjoy it, and to add to it with our own efforts
to make the world more beautiful, more available for everyone to enjoy.
Be good to one another. See the good in one another. See everyone as beautiful, precious, and worthy of being treasured. Look, too, for bleak places
that are in need of beauty-bringing. God made each one of us to be both beautiful and beauty-filling in the world. This is sacred work. Lets do it together!

Christian Church in Tennessee calls Interim Regional Minister

Rev. Dr. Beth Dobyns has been called to begin
serving as the Interim Regional Minister of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tennessee.
She brings extensive experience in specialized
interim ministry as well as congregational, area,
and regional ministry.
Educated at Texas Christian University and Brite
Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas, and St. Paul
School of Theology in Kansas City, Beth believes that everything in life
has the possibility of teaching us more about how we acknowledge and

Facts on the

Sanctuarys

act upon Gods call in our lives. She brings a great love for the church
and for the clarifying work that is possible during transitions and
transformations.
Beth is married to Bruce Dobyns, senior minister at First Christian
Church in Mayfield, Kentucky. Their permanent home is in Mayfield.
Beth begins her ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
in Tennessee onJanuary 1, 2015.
Current Regional Minister, Dr. Glen Stewart will retire Dec 31, 2014.

What is it? A system which sends a signal to hearing aids for clearer sound, especially making speech more intelligible.
How does it work? An antenna (Loop) surrounding the main floor pews sends an induction signal to your hearing aids.
Will my aids work? Yes, if they have a telephone program. Unless they are antiques, they will.
What do I do? Your aids will have either telephone circuit with a switch or it may work by digital program. To find out
how yours works and if it needs to be reprogrammed, check with your audiologist. Then, just sit in the pews on the main
floor, and turn them to the correct mode. And dont forget to switch them back to normal as you leave, or your aids will
impede normal conversation.
When do we start? If all goes as planned, You can start using this on Sunday, November 23.
Whom do we thank? Ellen Dillon initiated interest in this and saw it through with the Property Committee.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered

to make the pumpkin patch possible!
We raised over $6300 in just
two weeks to support the
