ALPHA DAFFAE SENKPENI, alpha.senkpeni@frontpageafricaonline.com

Buchanan, Grand Bassa County rand Bassa County was gearing up to celebrate at least
more than 21 days without any new case of the deadly
Ebola Virus until specimen of four sick people from the
LAC Plantation came back positive. This brings to a total
six new confirmed Ebola cases resurfacing between November 1 and
10th in Grand Bassa County.
Until November 4, the Liberian Agricultural Company (LAC)
plantation remained one of the areas dubbed Ebola-free by many,
thanks to several safety measures the management introduced
coupled with instructions by the Ministry of Health and partners on
how to prevent the virus from spreading.
But when four people are said to have traveled to RiverCess County
to attend a burial. They came back and started getting sick, thus the
new cases. When it was confirmed that the four persons including
an 11-year-old girl were all positive with the virus, the management
opted to quarantine the two camps where they resided before their
illness.
At a quickly arranged press briefing on Monday, in Buchanan, the
County Information officer and the county health administrator,
speaking on behalf of the Task Force told journalists that all of the
six cases are connected to RiverCess County when residents of Grand
Bassa crossed over to attend a funeral of a woman who reportedly
died of the virus.
Eddie Williams, Information Officer, disclosed that two of the
six persons died while being transported to the ETU in Monrovia,
indicating that one of the patients died onboard the ambulance from
the LAC hospital and has been buried by the countys Ebola burial
team while the other died in District Four.
In Monrovia Popo Beach community, a team comprising, active case
finders, contact tracers, the World Health Organization (WHO) and
two Community groupsfound clusters of new cases in the area.
From the back ground investigation presented by the active case
finders and corroborated by the contact tracers, it became very
apparent that Popo Beach has become the epicenter of a new Ebola
outbreak, states case findings obtained by FrontPage Africa.
The team states that there are four clusters of Ebola cases with
associated high fatality and each of these four clusters had an
independent index case. The case finders in the Popo Beach
community were able to identify people who had direct contact with
the man who was stabbed in the area in October. Some had alleged
that his wifes lover stabbed him in a jealous rage but everyone who
had direct contact with the mans body fluid are either dead or sick.
Twenty-eight persons from this web of contacts have been lost. They
have escaped to other communities including Old Road, New Kru
Town and Logan Town.
Eight persons who are believed to have had direct contact with the
victims body fluids as it oozed out of his wounds died.

The team wants visit to all of the homes with cases to identify all of
the contacts or establish the locations of all of the contacts and cases
that may not be known yet.
It states that there must be meetings with heads of households on
Ebola awareness in the Popo Beach area as there are reported cases
of denial and hiding of some sick people and the continuous carrying
out of secret burials.
We visited the homes of where the cases occurred and interviewed
contacts and survivals. We noted with dismay that an entire cluster
of households had been deserted and the contacts fled to different
communities, states the team.
Jenewondes nightmare
On Saturday, FrontPageAfrica visited the remote Grand Cape Mount
County town of Jenewonde, for them the Ebola epidemic is just
beginning. The town has lost 10% of its population to the disease
with a fatality rate of 90% and only one survivor.
Juma Mansaray watched as the burial team took away her mother and
aged Grandmother for burial in the forest. Jebbeh Mansaray and her
aged mother Miatta Mansaray are among almost thirty other persons
from the small town who have been buried in unmarked graves on a
once agricultural farmland.
The disease started to spread in the town in September when a
schoolteacher SaiduBallah, a resident of the town brought his sick
daughter from the city (Monrovia). Ballah is said to have taken his
daughter to a local herbalist who refused to treat her. He then brought
her home and when she died, Ballah, along with some of the towns
people secretly buried her. Residents said seven days after the burial,
Ballah and almost his entire family, except for one person died.
RIVERCESS ALSO HIT
In RiverCess County, information suggests that at least 10 persons
have died from the virus while 20 more people in Gozohn Town
(District #1) have been quarantined and with 81 under surveillance. It
is unclear whether all the 20 people have been tested and are confirmed
Ebola patients.Dr. Wilmot Smith, River CessCounty Health Officer,
told a local radio station that the main challenge is the lack of an
Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) in the county.
Most villages in the area where deaths occurred remain under
surveillance or quarantine but the issue of denial is rife. Health
authorities say locals in these rural areas are still attending unsafe
burials and performing rituals during the burial of loved ones. The
deplorable road condition also seems to be a factor that is impeding
efforts by health workers in the area to respond to the outbreak. These
health workers in some cases travel on foot to remote communities
and sometimes it takes seven to eight hours to get to one village.
On Monday, sources hinted FrontPage Africa that the administrations
of Grand Bassa and RiverCess Counties were holding a meeting

to collaborate in helping to curb the threat the virus poses in the

two counties. Sources disclosed that the meeting has prompted the
Grand BassaCounty Health Team to loan an ambulance to RiverCess
County to enhance the transportation of patients out of the county into
treatment centers.
County authorities in River Cess and Grand Bassa Countieshave
barred canoes and ferry from plying the nine crossing points over
the Tembo River that separates the two counties. The Police have
been deployed in the area and several towns have been quarantine
including Charlie Town (District #4), the epicenter of the recent
outbreak in the two counties.
ETU NOT READY YET
As these new Ebola cases are surfacing in the two counties, US Troops
in the county remain optimistic about completing a 100-bed ETU by
November 18, 2014. The 100-bed treatment facility when completed
by the Americans will be turned over to another agency, which has not
been named by the county task force or the local authorities.
Just late last month Grand Bassa was said to be doing good considering
the few cases it recorded in October and in fact some had started
arguing about the essence of US soldiers setting up an ETU in the
county.
Right now there are couple of makeshift ETUs in Buchanan at the
Liberian government hospital, but these are incapable of providing a
fullscale service to patients infected with the disease.
Latest update from the County Ebola Task Force shows that since
the outbreak in the county, 112 cases have been reported with 43
deaths of these 60 were confirmed cases, while the rest are probable
or suspected cases.
The international medical organization, Mdecins Sans Frontires/
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said the deadly Ebola outbreak is
far from over as new hotspots continue to emerge across Liberia. In
a statement issued on Monday, MSF said though the number of new
Ebola cases reported in the country has declined in recent weeks, the
international aid response must rapidly adapt to this new phase of the
epidemic in Liberia, or it risks undermining the progress made against
the disease.
MSF said unlike in neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone where
cases are on the rise, its teams in Liberia are witnessing a decline
in the number of Ebola patients admitted to Ebola Treatment Units
(ETUs) for the first time since the beginning of the Ebola epidemic.
At present, MSFs 250-bed ETU in Monrovia ELWA3 is treating
around 50 patients. In Foya, northern Liberia, the number of patients
reached zero on 30 October, with no confirmed cases since that date,
states MSF. Case numbers could rise again as they have done in
Guinea where, following two significant dips in the number of
admissions to MSF facilities, patient numbers are again increasing.

COMPLACENCY:
THE NEW
LIBERIA EBOLA
TRAGEDY

GOOD FOR PROFIT, NOT LIBERIA

AT THE legislative building, the seat of those who make

and debate laws for Liberia last weekend, the sanitizing
drum introduced at the height of the deadly Ebola outbreak,
to guard against the virus was empty.
VISITORS WALKED by the drum without washing their
hands and no one was there to check for temperatures. The
scenes have been similar in some places around the country.
JUST DAYS after the World Health Organization (WHO)
and the medical group, Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
announced a decline in the number of cases in Montserrado
County, many areas in Liberia appear to be taking on a lax
approach.
THE GOVERNMENT and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
is flirting with a new message: Zero infections by Christmas,
a feat truly possible if Liberians get a grip of what they have
been through the last few months and begin to take stock of
where they hope to reach.
WHILE IT IS TRUE that the worst-hit Ebola nation is
enjoying a few days without significant cases and a lot of
empty beds at Ebola Treatment Units across the country, it is
also true that in the last few days, a great deal of new cases
is prompting cause to put a halt to premature celebrations.
THE SAD REALITY IS that the epidemic which has
infected more than 13,000 people and killed nearly 5,000
people is far from out of our reach.
REPORTS COMING out of Grand Cape Mount and
Rivercess Counties, previously boasting of low or no
cases, are now reporting signs of emergence of Ebola. In
recent days, at least 10 persons have died from the virus in
Rivercess while 20 persons in Gozohn Town (District #1,
Rivercess County) are under quarantine and 81 are under
surveillance. It is unclear whether all the 20 people have
been tested and are confirmed Ebola patients, according to a
FrontPageAfrica correspondent in the area.
IN THE POPO BEACH, New Kru Town community, latest
data obtained by FrontPageAfrica suggest a resurging trend
which threatens to rock Montserrado County.
FPA HAS LEARNED that a team comprising the Active
case finders, contact tracers, WHO and Community groups
recently visited the Popo beach area where some say could
be the new epicenter of a new Ebola outbreak.
CONTACT TRACERS told FrontPageAfrica that there are
four clusters of Ebola cases with associated high fatality
and each of these four clusters had an independent index
case.
THE POPO BEACH and Rivercess outbreaks follow ugly
reports coming out of Jene-wonde Town in Grand Cape
Mount where several people have died of Ebola and others
currently under quarantine.
RESIDENTS OF THE town of over 300 people watch daily
as bodies are taken away by the burial team with fear of
who is the next victim.
AS JAMES JALLAH Paul a resident of the town put it, if
care is not taken, the town could be wiped off the face of
the earth by the deadly Ebola virus. We are begging the
government to come to our rescue. If the government does
not come to our rescue, we will finish (die) here; this place
will be an empty space, said Jallah.
WITH THESE INCREASING cases of the deadly virus in
several locations, it is yet too soon to begin pondering that
the war against Ebola is over and people should start going
about their normal lifestyles.

J. Yanqui Zaza, jyanqui@aol.com, Contributing Writer

ow that we are about to win the Ebola war, where

do we go from here? This is a question being
asked by many Liberians, including the current
Liberian Ambassador accredited to the U.S. Mr.
Jeremiah C. Sulunteh. Do we re-renegotiate many of these
excessive rental payments made to Monrovia-landlords, such
as the $1.5m for Liberian Telecommunication Authority lease?
(FrontPageAfrica, 10/15/14). Or do we downsize 30,000
employees of the 50,000 paid employees of the Liberian
government?
Of the 195,000 paid employees in Liberia, government employs
50,000 as per page # 40 of the 2010 Labor Survey conducted
by Ministry of Labor and Liberia Institute of Statistics and
Geo-Information Service. This means the government will
dismiss 60% (30,000/50,000) of its paid employees.
At a Senate Hearing to review the Plan to downsize nonessential
government employees, requested by Senators Geraldine DoeSherriff of Montserrado County and George Tengbeh of Lofa
County, Mr. George Werner, Director General of the Civil
Service Agency, disclosed that President Sirleaf has decided
to downsize about 30,000 non-essential employees beginning
in February of 2015. Many Liberians have commented on the
Plan of President Sirleaf, a darling of profiteers and a former
employee of big business.
The idea of downsizing or rightsizing is an economic policy
that increases profits for big business. When businesses cannot
increase sale volume or increase selling price, cost cutting is
instituted to produce profits. In many instances, cost cutting
has made big business appear effective and attractive. Rigidly,
recommended by big business or Wall Street, many business
tycoons continue to recommend that a bitter medicine such as
massive layoff is the only remedy for ailing economies around
the world.
For any or all-economic issues, turn to the business people,
say business tycoons. New York City did turn to a billionaire
without public-office experience Michael Bloomberg, after the
September 11, 2001 catastrophic disaster. The success story is
mixed, Wall Street went laughing, while public employees are
still recovering from stagnation in wages. Liberia did turn to an
economist and experienced-business executive, Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf to manage Liberia. The Ebola crisis has exposed the
true picture of Liberia: poor infrastructure, inadequate skilled
manpower, high rate of unemployment, etc., while at the same
time Sirleafs friends and families are milking the government.
I surely had believed that both New York City and Liberia
made the right decision until I read the 11/03/2014 NY Times
piece written by Mr. Paul Krugman, an economist and an
editorial columnist of the New York Times. In the article called
Business VS. Economics, he said this: if you want to fix

an ailing economy, you should turn to people who have been

successful in business, like leaders of major corporations,
entrepreneurs and wealthy investors. After all, doesnt their
success with money mean that they know how the economy
really works?
He said, Actually no. In fact, business leaders often give
remarkably bad economic advice, especially in troubled
times. He went to explain why he thinks so. Firstly, there are
business leaders who have gotten economic analysis right, and
plenty of public office holders who have gotten it wrong, he
added. But having said that, success in business does not seem
to convey any special insight into economic policy. Why, he
added. He elaborated on his theory. National economic policy,
even in small countries, needs to take into account kinds of
feedback that really matter in business life. For example, even
the biggest corporations sell only a small fraction of what they
make to their own workers, whereas even small countries sell
goods and services to themselves. Or alternatively, he stated,
when a successful businessperson looks at a troubled
economy and tries to apply the lesson of business experience,
To create jobs, the businessperson thinks, wages must come
down, expenses must be reduced; and in general, belts must be
tightened.
In reality, however, cutting wages and reducing spending
in a depressed economy just aggravates the real problem.
The downsizing and rightsizing in Liberia did not only hurt
the economy, but increased disillusionment among the poor.
What justified a government paying US $10,000 per month
to advisers, but dismissing employees earning US $100 per
month? Unlike a corporation that might dissolve or restructure
through bankruptcy, the country as well as its citizens must
search for other ways, including unsavory means to survive.
Interestingly, President Sirleaf stated that the government
is using the principles of austerity to dismiss 30,000 paid
employees. If so, why is her government not questioning her
son, Robert Sirleaf, about the National Oil Company spending
$138M of the $142M oil money as per 2012/2013 National
Budget? Or, why spend $64M on foreign travel; according
Charles Brumskine, a leader of an opposition party, if a country
intends to institute austerity principles? (FrontpageAfrica)
More so, why are her advisers squandering governments
money without prosecution? And whats about the
disbursement of the $6M money for Ebola? If the government
is serious about instituting the principles of austerity, why
not account for the Ebola money? Better yet, the government
should begin to re-negotiate many of the rental agreements
between the government and the Monrovia-landlords as part
of the austerity measures to reduce expenditure.

IN SEVERAL CORNERS around Monrovia, people have

started celebrating and living the post Ebola way of life,
converging on beaches and at other locations, something that
was done during the heat days of the outbreak.
COMMUNITIES HAVE STARTED playing soccer games
with people gathering in large numbers at one location for
celebrations.
HANDSHAKES ARE NOW been exchanged and people who
are not wearing long sleeves are seen knocking elbows with
others to exchange greetings.
IT IS JUST TOO much too soon to start celebrating victory
when dozens of cases of Ebola are still being reported in
counties around the country and even Monrovia.
GOOD TO REMEMBER that only a single case of the virus
crossed over from neighboring Guinea and escalated to an
alarming proportion, taking the country to a momentary

standstill. Whats more about more than 30 cases within the

confines of Liberia, that should be seen as an increment in
the spread of the virus rather than premature celebrations
resulting to complacency.
LIBERIANS SHOULD TAKE the Ebola outbreak as a new
beginning and further increase the level of care judging
from the history of the current outbreak where a single case
travelled from Guinea via Foya in Lofa County onward to the
entire country.
ITS TOO EARLY to celebrate; the war against Ebola is not
yet won- Liberians must standup and continue taking the
necessary preventive measures to avoid another major round
of catastrophe.
COMPLACENCY IN THE fight against Ebola will cause
more harm than good.

An absolute affirmation, not only recognized by Liberians, but by
global media houses. For me a Liberian journalist in America, I
have always told my listeners that FPA is, no doubt the number one

We admire your courage, but then Rodney Sieh, it is perhaps in your

whose second home was dictator William Tubman's notorious South

Dear Madam President:

Ref: An Open Letter to H. E. Madam President

against the Conduct of Cllr. Mark Bedor- Wla Freeman,
Commissioner, Independent Information Commission
(IIC) and Dr. Emmett A. Dennis, PresidentUniversity
of Liberia (UL)

adam President, in compliance with the

Freedom of Information Law, supported by
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
the African Charter on Human and Peoples
Rights as well as the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia,
on September 4, 2013, I wrote the University of Liberia
requesting for the full details of my 2012 and 2013 university
of Liberia Entrances results (Questionnaires, Answer sheets
and the Method (s) used in the Grading Process) respectively.
Madam President, between the first and second time I took
the exams, administered 2012 and 2013 respectively, I still
found myself amongst those who were declared unqualified
to undertake University studiesgiven the mass failure
declared by the University of Liberia which has denigrated
our educational sector, I am convinced beyond all reasonable
doubt that academic incompetence is not the only reason
(s) for the mass failure in the past three years that the
university has administered the Test. Madam President, it
will be surprising for you to know, that since my request to
have access to my information as guaranteed under the FOI
Law, the University of Liberia has unremorsely refused to
adhere to my request.
Madam President, still in compliance with the Freedom
of Information Law of the Republic of Liberia after all of
the formalities provided for under the law were fulfilled by
me with consistent unconscious refusal of the University
to comply with my request, I complained them to the
Independent information commission (IIC) on November 12,
2013 to give reason (s) why they refused to provide me with
my information as provided for by law.
Surprisingly Madam President, the commissioner of the IIC
has also refused or being lackadaisical to adjudicating my
complaint as brought before him on November 12, 2013
within the reasonable period of time as provided for by law
in Liberia. The purpose of this letter, Madam President, is to
call your attention, to a serious violation of laws by the two
officials (Dr. Dennis and Cllr. Freeman) of your government
which have the propensity to derail the efforts that you are
making to place Liberia among the comity of nations and
which deserves the urgent attention of the national leadership
of our dear country as we strive to build the peace and
strengthen our nascent democracy.
Among others, President Ellen Sirleaf, the two officials
have not just carried out an unapologetic violations of the
Freedom of Information Law, the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, the African Charter on Human and Peoples
Rights as well as the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia
but also a gross disregard to the CODE OF CONDUCT for
public official of the Republic of Liberia: Section 3.8 (NonDiscrimination), Section 3.14 (Professionalism), Section 4.1

(Responsibilities to the state and the Public service), Section

4.2 (Respect for laws of the state) and Section 11.21 (Abuse
of Rights).
Without much ado, I look forward to the IIC for impartial
execution of their functions like the Anti-Corruption
commission.

CHICKENS COMING
HOME TO ROOST IN
UNITY PARTY

The Editor,

he chickens are coming home to roost in the ruling

Unity Party. Isn't it ironic that UP which has endorsed
other opposition candidates over its own candidates
can now castigate Sylla-- (I am not a fan of Sylla and
UP)--for doing the same thing? Why would UP endorse NPP's
Abel Massally over UP Chairman Varney Sherman who is the
ruling party's candidate in the Cape Mount senatorial race?
Remember also that those former elected UP lawmakers that
now constitute the new PUP and they were dumped at the
UP convention over Ellen's handpicked choices in order to
undermine the primary contest rituals? Their leaving UP has
further weakened the base of the ruling party. But know that in
Liberia the ruling party's dirty history is the absolute control of
the National Election Commission.
Why would UP also endorse Prince Johnson in Nimba and
Zoe Penmoh in Grand Gedeh over their own candidates? The
UP has just embarked on its own self-destruction and should
be crushed in the upcoming senatorial races as a prelude to
the 2017 presidential contest, IF, and that is a big IF, we are
lucky to still have Ellen in office if she is not chased out by the
brewing political storm that could manifest itself into a mass
protest movement.
And finally, why would Partis Ellen endorse her son Robert
who is running as Independent? She could have "made"
him the UP's candidate over Sylla and won't have this extra
political headache that could turn away partisans from voting
for son Robert? But then again Ellen is not a smart politician
like Tolbert, Doe and Taylor.
So the opposition needs to rejoice, but be vigilant and mindful
that the National Election Commission, NEC is an extension of
the ruling Unity Party. I still can't get over the silent conspiracy
of some opposition parties who allowed Korkoya to become
NEC Chairman he contested for election as a Unity Party
member/candidate. Beware of Korkoya like his predecessor
Fromoyan who was and still is an Ellen loyalist.

involvement in the raping of
young Liberian children within
the age range of 7, 9, 10, 11, 12

He came close to walking out
of the Monrovia Central Prison
Tuesday after Criminal Court 'E'
Judge Cianeh Clinton-Johnson
granted him a US$25K bail,

provided by the law.
The swift intervention of
Solicitor General Betty Lamin

prompted
Supreme
Court Chamber Judge, Associate
Justice Phillip A.Z. Banks

The bail ruling brings to three
the number of high-profile
cases Judge Clinton Johnson
has presided over leading to
freedom for Lebanese nationals.
Bashir was arrested on April 19,
2013 and indicted for statutory
rape and endangering welfare
of children as well as interfering
with child custody.
In February, with Judge ClintonJohnson presiding, another
Lebanese national, Ali Saksouk,

but granted his freedom by the
controversial judge.
Saksouk was accused of raping a
13-year-old girl.
His release, judicial sources

done in secrecy and it is unclear
whether he is still in Liberia or
has fled the country.
Saksouk was freed even though
the state had not entered a plea
of nolle prosequoi on his behalf.
The defendant is the owner of the
Kings and Queen Supermarkets
on Benson Street and Sinkor Old
Road.
The victims father, Tarnue
Kesselly, had filed a complaint
against the accused.
According to the charge sheet, the
father reported to police that his
13-year-old daughter was caught
in a 4- Runner Jeep owned and
operated by defendant Saksouk.
The victim reportedly told police
that she met the defendant in
2013 at the Kings and Queens
Supermarket on the Old Road.
The victim told the police that
during that time the defendant
befriended her and both of them
exchanged phone numbers. She
also told criminal investigators
that since then, they had been
communicating on Facebook.
Following her explanation, the
police said they established
that the defendant allegedly
had sexual intercourse with the
victim and medical report from
the James Davies Memorial
Hospital revealed old healed
laceration on her private part.
Judge Clinton Johnson also
had a hand in the nicodemuslike release from the Monrovia
Central Prison of Anthony
Kassabli, 44, and his father,
Edmund Dib Kassabli, 81, two
Lebanese nationals convicted of
Human Trafficking.
FrontPageAfrica

reported that the Kassablis
were recently released on bail.
The father, Edmund Dib, has

his son remains out on bail in

Criminal Court 'E' Judge Cianeh Clinton-Johnson Tuesday granted Jaafar Bashir a US$25.000 bail citing several legal citations
as provided by the law. But the decision was immediately overturned by the Supreme Court. The ruling brings to three the
number of high profile ruling favoring Lebanese nationals that the judge has presided over leading to freedom for alleged rapists.

and reported flight of the older
Kassablis and bail of the younger
Kassabli may have dampened
progress made by Liberia on that
front, according to diplomatic

observers who have been

following with keen interest
the unfolding developments of
human trafficking in Liberia.
Liberia has witnessed a series
of unsolved rape cases in recent
years. In December 2012, Olivia
Zinnah was buried after suffering
years of pain and surgeries
following a rape when she was
only 7 years old.
According to the Liberian
Ministry of Gender and
Development,
Olivia
was
the fourth girl to die of raperelated injuries in 2012. The
ministry covered the costs of her
funeral. Olivias story was the
subject of critically-acclaimed
documentary entitled Small,
Small Thing.
In granting bail Monday, Judge
Clinton-Johnson: "Considering
that the defendant is accused
of raping scores of children,
the court must ensure that the
defendant does not post any
flight risks or danger to the
community as well as to any
other child. This court must
ensure that it protects the public
against any further criminal

act of the defendant and have

assurance from the defendant
that the judicial process will be
respected."
The judge said that due to the
controversy of the two medical
reports in declaring an individual
unfit for trial forced her exercise
her discretion power in granting
the defendant a special bail on
following terms and conditions.
FrontPageAfrica has learned
that Bashirs lawyers have been
working the clock to build up a
case that he is going insane in
hopes of winning freedom.
The bail bond amount was set
at US$25,000(Twenty Five
Thousand United state Dollars).
In accordance with Section
63.2, the said bail bond shall be
accompanied with two natural
personal affidavits which show
that they have sufficient vigilance
to secure the appearance of the
accused. This Court adds an
additional assurance requirement
that one of the two sureties
must be a blood relative of the
defendant and one from their
national union. The affidavits
must state their names, addresses

and telephone numbers and

say that they believe that they
exercise sufficient vigilance
over the defendant to ensure
the presence of the defendant at
the seconding of this court. The
natural sureties shall also ensure
that the defendant is kept away
from presence of children and
from association with children.
Considering that Dr. Bailey
has delayed his presence in
Liberia due to public health
concerns and because this court
does not kwon long this delay
will be, this court says that this
bail is for six months at which
time the following must take
place. The defendant must have
access to his private physician,
Dr. Mansour to continue his
treatment in accordance with his
medical report. The defendant
shall surrender his passport and
not leave Liberia and to report
to court once every week until
this issue is finally determined
and Dr. Bailey must perform
the psychiatric examination in
Liberia, witnessed by the private
physician of this defendant.

But Sanvee, who announced
a

legitimate because Liberian
politics has been repeatedly
compromised by insincere
candidates desperate to make
money.

Sylla emailed his withdrawal

BENEFACTOR, ACCOMPLICE

Sanvee takes Sirleaf, Weah and Neyor to task as Montserrado County senatorial D-Day draws nearer

little laughable to see now that
people are assuming that I will
sell now, Sanvee told Jlatehs
50-50 program.
He said rumors about a sellout
deal involving him were tactics
of a corrupt system that is
jittery about his candidacy.
Sorry for Sylla?
Sanvee said it was regrettable
that Sylla pulled out of the race
due to a lack of support from
his party.
I spoke to Ali on the day of
his announcement. Hes a good

Christopher Neyor

friend; in fact, I consider him

a brother. I believe hes one
of the finest species of our
generation but Ali was in a
very tough position. You have
a political institution where
you are bearing the standards
of that institution in an election
and nobody seems to support
you.
And you know what Liberian
politics is and it speaks volumes
of what we are dealing with;
what we are going against. We
are going against a system

PAGE

that is willing to do anything to

keep power and to perpetrate
itself in power.
And we know [this] and that is
why I have continuously said
we offer a fresh start for the
people of Montserrado County.
The choice is going to be very
clear.
If you feel we are in a better
situation or we are in a situation
where you want to continue
then you can go the route of the
system. What we are offering
is an opportunity for a fresh

start. Like I said, I spoke to him

[Ali] and I wished him well in
all his future endeavors and
we are going to be speaking
to his supporters because we
are in this process to the end,
Sanvee added.
Trio get nasty tag
George
Weah,
Robert
Sirleafand Christopher Neyor
may be viewed in some
quarters as the frontrunners
ahead of polling day but
Sanvee
had a nasty verdict for
them in a figurative language.
Sanvee slammed views that the
trio are considered as gurus,
claiming that Sylla was forced
to quit by default because
members of the partys county
chapter were openly endorsing
the son of the standard bearer.
Thats what I called the three
pillars of the system. And this is
how I define them and you will
be hearing more of this [when
the campaign starts]. You have
a representation of the system,
who has now mocked into
a candidate,
passing around

peddling false hopes and
talking about believing again.
You have an accomplice and a
benefactor of the system, who
inspires so much hope but is
now sitting at the queens table.
So he, too, is quiet. He is
sitting and eating at the queens
table. So he can no longer
speak. And the last pillar of
this system is the disgruntled
child, who helped, was a part
of the system and cut deals
with the system but is obsessed
now because the system is
not allowing him in the room
anymore. What we represent

is a fresh start. We dont have

[any of those characteristics]
and none of them can point
their fingers to me to say I am
part of this system.
Pressed to reveal the identities
of the trio, Sanvee said it is
laughable that a particular
candidate has so much money
to spend when the government
couldnt
buy
personal
protective equipment (PPEs),
which caused the death of
health workers, in the fight
against Ebola.
A lot of money is being
expended by the representation
of the corrupt system during
this election period, but the
people of Montserrado/Liberia
must remember just a few
months ago this very system
could not purchase PPEs and
rubber gloves that led to the
death of our people, mainly
healthcare workers. I intend
to put their feet to the fire
and demand accountability,
Sanvee wrote on facebook on
November 11 in a repeat of his
interview.
He then appointed Abraham
Darius Dillon, who was a guest
on the show, as chairman of
Team Sanvee with a promise to
unveil his full team in 24hours.
But Sanvee must brace-up for
a debate surrounding the purity
of Dillon, who endorsed Ellen
Johnson-Sirleaf for a second
term during the 2011 legislative
and presidential elections
and worked with Robert in
his role as senior presidential
advisor and board chairman of
the National Oil Company of

Since, the middle of last month

Hamm, 68, is one of America's

Burkina Faso Secrets Laid Bare As Toppled President's Papers Sold

Movement for Human and

Peoples' Rights.
The documents include bank
statements showing Francois
Compaore's personal account
held 88 million CFA Francs
(about 135,000 euros) -- a
fortune in a country where
three-quarters of the 18 million
residents are unemployed
and most live off subsistence
farming. His brother Blaise's
birth certificate and his wife
Salah's pay stubs were also
among the papers.
Another document purportedly
by Burkina Faso's intelligence
service, stamped "confidential",
concerns the murders 16 years
ago of Francois Compaore's
driver and a well-known
journalist who turned up
incinerated while investigating
the chauffeur's death.
- Gold bars -

The charred bodies of Norbert

Zongo and three companions
were found in a car, in an
incident that triggered street
protests by outraged prodemocracy advocates.
Francois
Compaore
was
charged with "murder and
harbouring the stolen body"
of his driver David Ouedaogo,
but the charges were later
dropped and members of the
presidential guard convicted.
In the journalist's murder,
lawyers for Zongo's family
alleged that the president's
brother was also involved but
the only person ever charged
was a former head of the
president's personal security
team.
Receipts in the ream of
documents appear to show that
Francois Compaore paid the
legal fees for this man, and the

case was ultimately dismissed

in 2006 on grounds of lack of
evidence.
"The big problem with these
documents is whether they're
authentic," said one of the
Zongo family lawyers Prosper
Farama, who said some seemed
legitimate and others "bizarre".
As after uprisings in Libya
and Ukraine, the homes of
Burkina Faso's former elite
have become a pilgrimage site
for locals.
The massive swimming pool
at Francois Compaore's home
became a popular spot for
neighbourhood children after
its owner fled.
The fact it has now been drained
of its water hasn't stopped the
curious and treasure hunters
from coming.
"I heard that there were three
gold bars (in the pool) and that

two had been picked up, but

there was still one left," said
Jessica Ouedraogo, 23, posing
for a photo in the empty pool.
"But there was nothing in
there. Other people got here
before me."
There was still plenty to take:
bathroom fixtures, electric
plugs and even door frames.
The sound of pounding was
constant as looters, who had
nearly picked the structure
clean, were busy chiseling up
the bathroom tiles.
Some justified their looting.
"It's what he stole from us more
than 27 years that we are now
taking back," said 23-year-old
Georges, who gave only his
first name as he yanked electric
wires from the wall.

Earlier mourners had packed

the capital city's 50,000-seater
Heroes Stadium for a farewell
service.
One of Sata's sons Gerald, gave
his father a moving send off,
taking to the microphone to sing
"Dance With My Father" by
Luther Vandross.

Overtaken by emotion, mourners

dressed in black or outfits
bearing the late president's
portrait, openly wept as Gerald
Sata sang.
Sata died at the age of 77
while undergoing treatment
for an undisclosed illness at in
London's private King Edward
VII hospital.
Leader of the neighbouring
Zimbabwe and Africa's oldest
leader,
90-year-old
Robert
Mugabe paid tribute to "this
African giant, courageous man"
as Sata's body lay in a casket
draped in a Zambian flag before
burial.
"He was a great man indeed who
sought to change the local arena
for the better. Let's bow our
heads and allow tears to drop,"
said Mugabe.
Sata is Zambia's second leader
to die in office. In 2008, Levy
Mwanawasa died in France after
an illness.
Sata died only days after Zambia
celebrated
half a century of

independence
Nicknamed "King Cobra" for
his acerbic tongue, Sata been
replaced by Vice President Guy
Scott until an election is held
within 90 days of his death.
Scott -- born of British parents
and Africa's first white leader
since South Africa's apartheid era

-- cannot run because Zambia's

constitution bars candidates of
direct foreign lineage.
He
pledged
to
organise
democratic elections.
"You will get the president that
you want. I will do it to the best
of my ability because of what he
(Sata) taught me," Scott said in
a eulogy.
Sata came to power in 2011
elections on populist promises
to transform the copper-rich
country within 90 days by
tackling corruption, lowering
taxes and creating jobs.
But Sata's critics say that by
the time he died the former
policeman, trade unionist and
taxidermist had transformed
into an authoritarian populist as
his anti-graft crusade targeted
political adversaries.
He made it to the presidency
after four attempts at the polls.
Sata who rose from cleaning
railway platforms in London to
the country's top job, died after
serving three of his five year
term.
The funeral was also attended by
regional or representatives from
as far afield as South Sudan to
Ghana, Kenya to Madagascar
and from nearly all the southern
African countries.

Confederation

Morocco had requested that the

this possibility.
The country has now opted to
pull out of hosting the finals,
and Caf has announced that as
a result they have been expelled

Kingdom of Morocco in a
letter dated 8 November 2014
requesting the postponement
of the Orange Africa Cup of
Nations in 2015," a statement
read on Caf's official website.
"This
response
clearly
indicates that the Royal
Moroccan Football Federation
reiterated its refusal to hold
the competition on the dates
indicated (January 17-February

8, 2015). Therefore, having

firmly and unanimously notified
on 3 November its decision to
keep the competition on the
dates indicated, the Executive
Committee confirmed that the
Orange Africa Cup of Nations
2015 will not take place in
Morocco.
"The Executive Committee

are currently under review,

win] against the Hornets,. "I

have a no-trade clause. [Lakers
governor] Jeanie [Buss] and
[Lakers executive vice president
of basketball operations] Jimmie
[Buss] aren't sending me
anywhere."
Lets be clear, here. Kobe Bryant
will never be a hundred percent
lock to stay in Los Angeles for
the duration of his contract,
but if he were to ever be traded
from the Los Angeles Lakers,
something will have gone
terribly, terribly wrong.
The idea that New York Knicks
president Phil Jackson would
want to trade the suddenly
serviceable Amare Stoudemire
to Los Angeles as a way
to acquire the NBAs most
infamous
triangle
offensedisruptor is laughable. Jackson
knows that hes working from
the bottom up in New York,
establishing a mindset in terms
of both the teams offense and
overall philosophy, and you can
be more than assured that he
doesnt look at Kobe as a sort of
quick fix.
The Lakers, and by extension
Kobe, are also aware that one
swift move or two isnt going to
change much for this franchise.
Taking in Stoudemires expiring
contract would knock Kobe
Bryants $25 million off of next

years books, but IT WOULD

ALSO
KNOCK
KOBE
BRYANT OFF OF THE LOS
ANGELES LAKERS.
Working in a vacuum, without
even giving a nod to Bryants
history with the Lakers, its
important to understand that
even with Kobes ridiculous
contract on the books the Lakers
will have solid enough salary
cap footing this offseason. If the
team does the sensible thing and
declines Jordan Hills $9 million
option, the Lakers will have just
six players under contract and
potentially nearly $30 million
in cap space this summer if the
franchise hangs on to Ed Davis
and Robert Sacre.
The
lingering
question
surrounding a hypothetical
free agents willingness to play
alongside Bryant will still be
there, but it is important to note
that the Lakers at least still have
options moving forward. They
dont need to make a massive,
franchise-shifting move in order
to save their future. Bryant,
weirdly, still is the future.
A trade would only work if
it were pitched in an effort
to accommodate Bryant, and
Kobe has given every on-record
indication that he wants to stay
with the Lakers for as long as
theyll have him. TheLakers
made a point to not waive the
sadly waive-o-ble Steve Nash
in order to preserve as much
cap space as possible for next
summer. The team acquired
Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin

during the offseason, two players

working on contracts that expire
this summer. This season doesnt
count. This upcoming offseason
does.
The Lakers got their first win
Sunday, but this figures to be
a long, tank-worthy season.
The team is shooting for a high
lottery pick to pair alongside
the returning Julius Randle next
season, and for cap space this
summer after it (purposely?)
whiffed during the 2014
offseason. The teams only
consolation is that Kobe Bryant
will be encouraging those who
have already bought their seats
to actually show up for games,
and that local ratings will stay
huge just as long as Kobe suits
up.
Theyre not going to trade that
money-making nugget just to
completely clear house. The fact
that Bryant is a Lakers legend
barely even factors into it on
basketball terms.
The only way Kobe Bryant is
getting traded from the Los
Angeles Lakers is if Kobe
Bryant asks to be traded from
the Lakers, and even then there
arent a whole lot of teams with
the contracts to exchange with
Los Angeles, much less the need
for a guy making $48.5 million
over the next two seasons while
shooting 39 percent spread out
over 23 shots per game. Until
Kobe starts fuming, we should
probably just back off this line of
questioning for a while.

has a binding contract that will
pay him more than $48 million
combined this year and next to
play with the Lakers until the
summer of 2016. He also owns
one of the NBAs few no-trade
clauses, meaning that any Lakers
deal involving Bryant would
have to receive Kobes full
support to make it NBA-legal.
Because Kobes Lakers started
the year off by losing their first
five games, and because Kobe

EBOLA

ne Direction, Ed
Sheeran and a host
of other stars are to
raise money to fight
Ebola with a 30th anniversary
version of the Band Aid charity
single first recorded in aid of
famine relief in Ethiopia.
Bob Geldof and fellow singersongwriter Midge Ure, the
original Band Aid organizers,
announced plans to re-record
the single -- "Do They Know
It's Christmas?" -- at a news
conference Monday.
Geldof reflected on the cruelty of
Ebola, which is spread by contact
with the bodily fluids of a person
infected with the virus. "Mothers
can't cradle their children; lovers
can't comfort each other; wives
can't hold their husbands' hands
while they die. That's not right. It
can be stopped," he said.
He also praised the "immensity
of bravery" of those caring for
Ebola patients in West Africa,
where the worst affected
nations are Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone, including British
healthcare workers and military.
The lineup for the 30th
anniversary single combines
some of those involved in the
original recording in 1984 as
well as fresh talent. Besides
pop superstars One Direction,
the artists signed up to take
part include U2 frontman Bono,
Coldplay's Chris Martin and
Ellie Goulding.
The new version of the track will
be recorded this weekend at the
same London studios where the
original was created. Some of the
lyrics will be updated to reflect
the different circumstances of
this crisis, 30 years on.

He is officially Ebola-free, and

Dr. Spencer did everything

Dr. Laura Evans, the physician

New Yorkers, specifically
health care workers, have
been
stigmatized
and

discriminated against because

of misinformation about the

THE TERRIBLE STORY OF A HUNGER

STRIKE IN THE SHADOW OF EBOLA

n Guinea, the West

African nation where
more than 1,000 people
haved ied from the worst
Ebola outbreak yet
, local officials from a troubled
village are now reported to be
on hunger strike in the capital.
According to the BBC, at least
20 officials from the southern
village of Wome have been
camping outside Guinea's
parliament in Conakry since
the strike began. The group
are wearing t-shirts called
"Dmilitarisez
Womey,"
Guinean media reports, and
calling for the end to what
they describe as a military
occupation of their village.
Wome's
predicament
highlights some of the broader
problems being created by
Ebola's medical emergency.
The village, located in Guinea's
southeastern forestire region
of wooded mountains, became
a focal point for international
attention in September when

reporter Lara Logan is being

quarantined in a South Africa
hotel after visiting a hospital
treating Ebola patients in
Liberia for a 60 Minutes
report.
CBS said Logans 21-day
self-quarantine ends Friday.
Neither Logan nor the four
other CBS employees in South
Africa have shown any sign
of the virus, according to an
Associated Press report.
The latest numbers:
eight people who had been
distributing information about
Ebola,
including
several
Guinean health workers and
three journalists, were found
dead days after they were
attacked in the village. A
spokesperson for Guinea's
government explained that the
bodies were found in a septic
tank by an elementary school;
three of them had their throats
slit.
The murder of people working
to spread information about
Ebola caused widespread
concern. Researchers have
identified the latest Ebola
outbreak's ground zero patient
as a toddler in a different
Guinea forestirevillage and
poor education about Ebola
risks is a factor that has enabled
the virus to spread.
Attempts by health workers
to disseminate information
about hand washing and
water sanitation sometimes
sometimes led to confrontations
with locals, however. In the city
of Nzerekore, 30 miles from
Wome, there were accounts
of a riot in August after some
became convinced that health
workers had come to spread the
disease rather than prevent it.

Number of cases worldwide in

the current outbreak: 13,042
(as of Nov. 5)
Number of deaths: 4,818 (as of
Nov. 5)
Countries currently affected by
Ebola: Mali, Guinea, Liberia,
Sierra Leone, Spain, and the
United States of America.
Countries where the outbreak
has ended: Nigeria (Oct. 19),
Senegal (Oct. 17)
And heres your daily reminder
not to panic:
The likelihood of contracting
Ebola
in
Massachusetts
remains very low, according
to the states public health
officials. You have to be in
direct contact with an infected
persons bodily fluids while
they are contagious (displaying
symptoms of Ebola). Even if
someone has been exposed,
symptoms may appear in
as little as two days, and in
as many as 21 days, after
exposure. The CDC says the
average is 8 to 10 days.
Ebola symptoms: - Fever
(greater than 38.6C or
101.5F);- Severe headache;
- Muscle pain;- Weakness;Diarrhea;Vomiting;Abdominal (stomach) pain;
- Unexplained hemorrhage
(bleeding or bruising)

The BBC reports that crowds

were shouting "Ebola is a lie!"
As The Post's Abby Philip
reports, villagers in the
isolated, resource-rich, and
ethnically diverse forestire
region had often settled their
own affairs and the viewed
the central government with
suspicion. When Ebola arrived,
"bringing with it health
workers in terrifying moon
suits and outsiders, including
foreigners, spraying unfamiliar
substances," things got worse,
Phillip writes.
A number of people have
been arrested in relation to
the murders in Wome, and
the
Guinean
government
subsequently cancelled its
Ebola education plan in the
country's
southeast.
The
hunger strike is an unexpected
consequences, however: Local
officials say that the military
has taken over the village,
with as many as 6,000 people
to escape into the forest out
of fear of reprisals. And Faya
Millimono, leader of the
opposition Liberal Party, told
the BBC that 13 people had
died because of the conditions.

SENATE, HOUSE DIVIDED OVER ELECTION DATE

Lower House Proposes December 16; Upper House Wants December 30th 2014

Henry Karmo (0886522495) henrykarmo@frontpageafricaonline.com

Monrovia he
House
of
Representatives and
Senate have passed
separate
resolutions
with two preferences for the
upcoming senatorial elections.
The House of Representatives
had already endorsed the
requested December 16, 2014
date by the National Elections
Commission (NEC) while the
senate has set December 30th
2014 as the official date for the
conduct of the special senatorial
elections throughout the country.
The senate in its communication
states: Acknowledging that the
National Elections Commission
(NEC) in its letter dated 3rd
November 2014 further requests
legislative approval of its
alternative plan of action and
additional funding for the delayed
conduct of elections which was
not originally anticipated; having
therefore carefully reviewed the
new request or funding as well
as revised electoral scheduled
as submitted by the NEC, it is
resolved by the Senate and the
House of Representatives of
the 53rd National Legislature
of the Republic of Liberia in
extraordinary session assembled.
The Senate proposed that the
National Elections Commission,
the Agency of government
authorized to hold a general and
special election is directed to
schedule the commencement of
the Campaign process for the
2014 senatorial elections the
first week of December 2014;
and that the conduct of elections

shall be held throughout the

republic on December 30, 2014.
The House of Representatives
version of the resolution called
for the holding of Election on
the 16th of December 2014 as
requested by the NEC the body
charged with the responsibility
to conduct elections.
The conduct of elections before
2015 has been met with mix
public reactions given the
countrys health situation. Some
say the Ebola crisis is unhealthy,
stressing the need to postpone
the elections for next year
since in fact election is about
campaigning and campaigning
is about gathering and taking
into consideration the way of
transmission of Ebola is contact,
it is unhealthy to hold elections
now.

Others say that if election is not

held before next year January
2015, there could be 15 vacancies
at the Senate.
Article 46 of the Liberian
constitution says for the seat of
a senator to be vacated at the
end of his 9 years tenure, The
senator with the higher votes cast
shall be the senator of the first
category and the senator with
the lower votes cast shall be the
second category; provided that
no two senators from a county
shall be placed in the same
category. The seat of senators of
the first category shall be vacated
at the expiration of the ninth
year, the Constitutions quotes.
In a related development the
House of Representative has
extended its stay in session to the
12th of December 2014.

Harper, Maryland County:

illiam V.S. Tubman University (TU) has taken note of misleading allegations in
a communication presented to the House of Representatives plenary session by
Hon. Numene T.H. Bartekwa on October 30, 2014. That communication focused
on the employment policy at TU was written without seeking any clarification or
information from the University. Hon. Bartekwas fabricated communication is inflammatory,
capable of smearing the reputation of the institution, intending to damage the kind of rapid
reforms undertaken at the institution, and damaging to the kind of community we are trying to
build.
The University puts on the public record the following facts regarding its employment operations:
Salary is not based on nationality but on the level of education, breadth and depth of experience
and professionalism. It does not discriminate against Liberians. It is based on education and
competencies. Our core values explicitly state our focus to be local, national, and international,
with an emphasis on the celebration of diversity and the promotion of equal opportunities;
Regarding relocation allowance, our policy clearly stipulates the process. Relocation allowance
is based on position and place of origin. Relocation allowance has nothing to do with nationality
whether Liberian, or not. The employee eligible to receive relocation allowance signs a two
year service contract proviso to inculcate service and commitment to the University;
Tubman Universitys mission and vision are to provide quality educational experiences that
transform the life of individuals for worthy service envisioning so doing with quality
and excellence. Therefore the University attracts candidates from a global arena. Each candidate
is vetted for job qualifications match and fit to the organization. Our policies and guidelines are
clear with respect to academic appointments, rankings, and performance expectations;
If, as asserted that we favor foreigners over Liberians, why are we sending Liberians to obtain
advanced degrees to return and serve the University? Currently, we have seven (7) Liberians
studying at master degree level at Obafemi Awolowo University and University of Ibadan in
Nigeria respectively; one (1) person at the University of Birmingham-UK; and one (1) person
at Stella Maris Mother Patern College of Health Sciences program in Nursing. We already have
two (2) persons who have completed their masters studies from Cuttington University and
Makerere University-Uganda who are currently serving the University. Developing a critical
mass of Liberians competent to serve is implicit in our mission. Therefore we implemented this
Grow Our Own scholarship program that from year to year depends on funding availability;
Vacant positions at TU are advertised in local dailies, online media outlets such as TLC Africa
and our TU website, http://www.tubmanu.edu.lr In order to bridge the gap given the human
capacity problem faced by our nation, we do hire foreigners in some instances where a competent
Liberian cannot be found to match our needs, or a competent Liberian who is unwilling to relocate
to the duty station in Maryland County;
Hon. Bartekwa claims that about 80% of the workforce at Tubman University are foreigners. Our
FactSheet produced each semester clearly defeats his research. The most recent FactSheet dated
14 April 2014, shows that Tubman University had a workforce of 370 general and professional
staff comprising 312 non-instructional staff and administrators, and 58 faculty. They supported
the needs for 807 regular students enrolled in the five colleges and 189 students enrolled in
the preparatory Access to College program for the 2nd semester of academic year 2014-2015.
Dissecting our 312 non-instructional staff and administrators, 299 or 96% are Liberians while
13 or 4% are foreigners; of the 58 instructional staff, 35 or 60.34% are Liberians while 23 or
39.66% are foreigners.
The University assures the general public that its employment policy does not favor foreigners
over Liberians. Hon. Bartekwas information provided in his letter to Plenary is outrageous,
fabricated on falsehood, and is without merit. AT TU, our mission is to provide quality
educational experiences that transform the lives of individuals for worthy service. In keeping
with this mission, our vision is to be center of quality and excellence. To fulfill and actualize
our mission and vision, this public University perseveres to provide excellent educational
experiences and opportunities that are relevant, meaningful, and globally competent in the
training of future leaders of Liberia and the world at large.
William V.S. Tubman University views the claims of Hon. Numene T. H. Bartekwa as a deliberate
attempt to create mischief and undermine the tremendously great and dedicated work of those
Liberians and foreigners striving to build a quality university for Liberia.
As of Semester II of academic year 2014, 23.30% of the regularly enrolled student population
of TU hailed from Grand Kru County, second in percentage to Maryland County, 46.22%. That
is to say more than two-thirds of the students of TU came from these two counties, finding fouryear tertiary education in southeast Liberia. Perhaps Hon. Numene T.H. Bartekwa might busy
himself with sponsorship of students to build capacity not only in Grand Kru, but in Liberia,
and wherever they might choose to serve. Tubman University invites Hon. Bartekwa to become
involved in our efforts to build human capacity competent to serve locally, nationally, globally.
The public is also invited to peruse our website (that has a tab for our human resource needs), or,
visit our campus in Harper, or our Monrovia Site Office to access information on the Universitys
policies, programs, and initiatives. Additionally, email requests can be sent to publicrelations@
tubmanu.edu.lr, or to sgaye@tubmanu.edu.lr

FOR THE
DOUBLE

Jabateh scores twice in

Kubans six-goal thriller
with Spartak Moscow

t appears Sekou Jabateh-Oliseh is returning to

the form that saw him made light works of Fbio
Coentro and earned praises from then coach Jose
Mourinho after an exceptionaldisplay during a first
leg 1-1 draw with Real Madrid while playing for CSKA
Moscow in the2011/2012 Uefa Champions League on
February 12, 2012 in Moscow.
Jabateh stayed with GreecesPAOK FC on loan before
returning on another loan with Kuban Krasnodar in
Russia.
And having watched from the bench as Kuban were
hammered by parent club CSKA 6-0 on October 18,
Jabateh returned to league action in a scoreless draw with
Torpedo Moscow on October 25, playing for 81 minutes.
He also played the entire game as Kuban beat Tosno
3-0 in the Russian Cup on October 29 but it was his
scintillating displayagainst Spartak Moscow that have
left some asking whether he has returned to the form that
earned him the wonder boy name in Liberia.
Jabateh scored twicein the 47th and 55th minutesas
Kuban forced Spartak, who shocked the home fans with
an 11th minute lead from Germanys Serdar Ta, to a

3-3 draw on November 2.

A brace from Swedens Kim Kllstrmin the 61st and
65 minutesrestored the visitors lead before Bulgarias
Ivelin Popov ensured the spoils were shared with a
penalty three minutes later.
Brazils Danilo Cirino de Oliveira replaced Jabateh
in the 75th minute but that didnt deter coach Viktor
Goncharenko from handing him a starting role in a 1-0
away win toUral on November 7.
Popov again secured the three points from the spot kick
while Jabateh was replaced in the 80th minute by Russias
Artur Tlisov.
Jabatehsdouble means he has scored four goals in 10
league matches (659 minutes and eight starts) with Kuban
leveled on 24 points with FC Krasnodar and Terek but are
fifth-placed due to inferior goals difference.
Zenit lead the standings with 32 points, seven points more
than CSKA in second.
An impressive performance could secure a permanent
deal for Jabateh with his CSKAs contract set to expire
in June 2015.
The speculations are rife and the writings are visible

that there is an end in sight for Jabatehs time at the

Arena Khimki having fallen down the pecking orders
to Nigerias Ahmed Musa and Ivory Coasts Seydou
Doumbia.
Musa and Doumbia, who traveled around the world from
Africa Cup of Nations duties in Calabar and Abidjan
respectively in mid-October, scored twice respectively
when Kuban were mauled by CSKA.
Jabateh has failed to impress since CSKA bought Musa
from Dutch club VVV Venlo in January 2012, prompting
loan moves to PAOK in January 2013, with an extension
in July 2013 and with Kuban in July 2014.
And it is highly unlikely, barring injury, that CSKA will
renew his contract as Musa has been impressive since his
signing.
Musa has scored 24 goals in 78 league matches and five
goals in nine cup matches in Russia.
And along with Doumbia, who has scored 60 goals in 92
league matches, it
is highly unlikely CSKA will renew Jabatehs contract
when it expires in June
2015.

PRICE L$40
The Ivory Coast international scored both
goals as CSKA shocked English champions
Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium
in the Champions League on November 5
having also scored in the 2-2 draw during
the first leg on October 21 in Moscow.
Jabateh did give a glorious impression of
the footballer he wanted to be since his
move from Liberia to Nigeria and from
Denmark to Russia.
So has he failed to show that his genuine
greatness was a real possibility?
It is not so late. Sekou Jabateh is a good
player. Hes a fine player and a young guy.
Sometimes people experienced differences
in their career. He started very well [but]
he had this situation where his career is not
too stable at his club and also at the national
team.
But I think he still has time to improve
because hes not a bad player at all. So those
are just some of the phases you go through
in your professional career. It doesnt mean
that is the end of his career. I am sure he can
use this season to bounce back. The season
just started.
I heard that he scored two goals and I want
to hope that he continues working hard so
that he can make himself a regular player on
the team. Hes a good player and I think he
can make a difference, Kelvin Sebwe, who
played for Liberia between 1988 to 2009,
told UNMIL Radios Sport Extra program
on October 25.
A much-travelled player, Sebwe played for
clubs in France, Belgium and the United
Arab Emirates but spent the major part of
his career in Greece, where he played for
eight different clubs.
And Sebwe said hes willing to lend a
helping hand toJabateh once a link is
established.
I have been hoping to get in touch with
Jabateh. I am open to give pieces of advice.
I am open to let him know what exactly to
expect and how to cope with the situation
but I havent been able to get in touch with
him.
I have been trying and I will be willing to
talk to him or sent him emails if any of you
guys can help me get in touch with him.
This is not the end [of his career]. He needs
to do certain things in order to put his career
back to where it should be. He needs to do
that on a club level first. He needs to do that
on the national team level because he still
got somethings to prove to his country,
Sebwe added.
And Jabateh will be hoping to continue
from where he stopped when Kuban travel
to Zenit St. Petersburg, who dropped their
first three points in the leaguea 1-3 defeat
to Terek Grozny on November 8 on
November 22.
