Configuring Dial-up Networking on Windows XP


To configure a dial-up connection:
1. On the Start menu, click All Programs Accessories
Communications New Connection Wizard.
2. In the New Connection Wizard window, click Next.
3. On the Network Connection Type page, select Set up an advanced
connection.

4. Click Next.
5. On the Advanced Connection Options page, select Connect directly to
another computer.

6. Click Next.
7. On the Host or Guest page, select Guest.

8. Click Next.
9. On the Connection Name page, set the desired name for the serial
connection, for instance MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection.

10. Click Next.


11. On the Select a Device page, select Communications cable between
two computers.

12. Click Next.


13. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard page, select Add a
shortcut to this connection to my desktop.

14. Click Finish.


15. On the Start menu, click All Programs Accessories
Communications Network Connections.
16. Double-click the MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection icon.
17. In the Connect MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection dialog box, click
Properties.
You can leave the User name and Password boxes empty.

18. In the Connect MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection dialog box, click


Properties.
19. Make sure that the General tab is selected.

20. In the Select a device list, select Communications cable between two
computers for the serial port you will use to connect to the equipment
(typically COM1 or COM2).
21. Select Show icon in notification area when connected.
22. Click Configure.

23. In the Modem Configuration dialog box, select 115200 in the Maximum
speed (bps) list.
24. Clear all check boxes.
25. Click OK.
26. In the MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection Properties dialog box, select
the Options tab.

27. Under Dialing options, select Display progress while connecting.


28. Clear all other check boxes.

29. Under Redialing options, select:


Redial attempts:

Time between redial attempts:

1 minute

Idle time before hanging up:

never

30. Select the Security tab.

31. Select Typical (recommended settings).


32. In the Validate my identity as follows list, select Allow unsecured
password.
33. Select the Networking tab.

34. In the Type of dial-up server I am calling list, select PPP; Windows
95/98/NT4/2000, Internet.
35. Click Settings.

36. In the PPP Settings dialog box, clear all check boxes.
37. Click OK to return to the MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection Properties
dialog box.
38. In the This connection uses the following items list, select Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP).
39. Click the Properties button.
40. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, select the
General tab.

41. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.


42. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
43. Click Advanced.
44. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, select the General tab.

45. Select Use default gateway on remote network


46. Clear the Use IP header compression check box.
47. Click OK to return to the Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties dialog box.
48. Click OK to return to the MINI-LINK HC Serial Connection Properties
dialog box.
49. Continue to configure Internet Explorer as described in Section 3.3.2 on
page 33.
