Data booklet can be used

Q1) a)Draw a fully labelled diagram of a cell made by connecting a Zn2+(aq)/Zn

system with a Cu2+(aq)/Cu system and show the direction of flow of electrons in the
external circuit when its used to generate electricity. [3]

b)Write equations for the reaction at each electrode when the cell produces an
electric current.
[2]

c)Deduce the value for the e.m.f of the cell operating under standard conditions [1]

d)Predict and explain with a resoning how would the e.m.f of the cell be affected if:
i)
the concentration of Cu2+ ions was increased [2]
ii) the concentration of Zn2+ ions was decreased

Q2a)Benzoic acid C6H5COOH, is a weak monobasic acid. (Ka = 6.4 x 105 mol/dm3)
a) what is the [H+] in a 0.02 mol/dm3 benzoic acid ? [2]

b)what is the pH of of a solution having 7.2g of sodium benzoate in 1dm 3 of

0.02mol/dm3 benzoic acid ?
[2]

c) By how much would the pH change if 1 cm3 of 1.0 mol/dm3 NaOH is added to
buffer in part ( c) ? [2]

Q3a) A bromoalkane, RBr ,is hydrolyzed by aqueous sodium hydroxide.

Write a balanced equation for the reaction and suggest what type of reaction
it is .[2]

b) The following results were obtained from two experiments on such a

hydrolysis. In each experiment ,the overall [NaOH(aq)] remained virtually
constant at the value given at the top of the column.

Plot these data on suitable axes and use your graph to determine the following.[6]
i)

use the half life method to deduce the order of reaction with respect to
bromoalkane

ii)use initial rates method to deduce order of reaction with respect to sodium
hydroxide.

iii)construct a rate equation for the reaction and use it to calculate a value of rate
constant. [2]

Q4a)one of the three chlorides CCl4,SiCl4,and GeCl4 does not react with water ,but
the other two do. Write an equation for one of the reactions, and suggest an
explanation for why the third chloride does not react. [3]

b)Red lead is an oxide of lead used extensively as a surface coating to prevent

corrosion of iron and steel . it contains 90.66% by mass of lead , which is present in
both the +II and +IV oxidation states
calculate the empirical formula of red lead ,and predict the reaction it would
undergo on being heated strongly in air .write an equation for the reaction [3]

Q5a) when copper(II) sulphate is reacted with NaOH solution a gelatinous pale blue
precipitate is formed. When the reaction is repeated with aqueous ammonia
(ammonium hydroxide solution), the pale blue precipitate dissolves as soon as excess
ammonia is added. Write equations to explain the reactions with sodium hydroxide
and then with ammonia excess ammonia. [5]
