NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

Kia Ora Everyone,

We have had a fantastic and busy week this week with our school athletics
held on Tuesday. This was literally a race against each other and the
weather! Thankfully we got all of our events done before the snow (whats
up with that Mr Weatherman?).You can see the results on our school
Facebook page.
Over the last couple of weeks we have had a few questions about lunch
times and our procedure for children eating their lunch. I just though I would clarify it with you all, especially as
some people dont want to come and speak to us directly. I dont know why honestly we dont bite. Anyway,
Im not sure why, but for some reason there is an impression that our teachers are not letting students finish
their lunches, this is just not true. We do everything we can to make sure all of our students have enough food
to eat, and get time to go out and play. In fact I know of instances where everyone of our staff has given up
some or all of their own lunch to kids who dont have enough. And actually the reality is that teachers spend
most of the supervised part of lunch encouraging children to eat more.
So normal classroom procedure is that teachers supervise their own class, and or their buddy class (if they
have duty) for ten minutes seated eating time, in class if the weather is rubbish or outside on a nice day. The
reason we supervise is the rubbish problem and to make sure our children do actually eat.
Im not sure if you can remember the last childrens birthday party you went to but surely you must of noticed
that with any grouping of children, large or small, a fairly large amount of mess occurs. They are not being
naughty, its just exciting eating with your mates and food and litter just tends to spread.
Now imagine managing a childrens party of 20 plus children twice a day, by yourself = maximum mess. Not
to mention the 20% of children who tend to spend most of their eating time chatting to their neighbours and
dont manage to eat anything at all. Or the other 20% of children who just want to go out and play and will skip
their lunch on purpose.
Now 99% of children will finish their lunch easily within that ten minutes, and a lot of the teachers sit down with
their students and eat with them. It is a great time to sit down and chat with your students, after which they are
encouraged to pack away their rubbish and go out to play so their teacher can have a bit of child-free down
time (this is totally necessary for the sanity of all involved). If kids are not finished, it is either for one of two
reasons, A) they talked the whole time and wasted their eating time or B) they are genuinely slow eaters and
need a bit more time (I had a lovely little girl a couple of years ago who used to drive me batty, 25 minutes to
eat a chicken sandwich! I still miss her :-) So if the child is in category A, they generally get the "hard luck off
you go" from their teacher. The category B kids will be allowed to finish their lunch independently in class.
So thats the story, if you do have any other questions or concerns please speak to me or your classroom
teacher, I know we sometimes look like we are super busy, but we will always make time to see you.
Have a great weekend, and remember dont come to school tomorrow!!

School Photos are next Thursday 20th November

Your child should have bought an envelope home for you to fill out. If you would like a sibling photo I have the
sibling envelopes in my office. All children are to be in uniform on this day, especially the red polo top.
