Books 9-12

Odysseus begins to tell his story to the Phaecian king.


Ismarus
Odysseus and his mates sack this town and take all its treasure and split it.
The other sailors want to remain there and feast at Ismarus.
The Cicones come and start to kill Odysseus men.
Leave Island
They are forced to leave the island so that the Cicones dont kill any more of them
Zeus punishes Odysseus and his men with a hurricane for killing the people at Ismarus
Lotus Eaters
Odysseus only sends a few men to meet the Lotus Eaters and check out the island
The sailors are offered the lotus flowers, which taste delicious and puts them in a trance
The men have to be dragged back to the ship so they can leave
Cyclopes
The island is overrun by goats, which the Cyclopes eat
Odysseus takes some of his men to the cave where Polyphemus lives
They find goats, cheese, milk, etc.
Inside the Cave
Odysseus realizes he and his men are helpless when Polyphemus comes in
He makes up a story to tell to Polyphemus to try and get help
Inside Cave
Polyphemus says Odysseus is a stranger, he doesnt care about the gods
They are stronger and more powerful than the gods
Noman
Odysseus gives Polyphemus wine to drink
He becomes drunk and Odysseus and his men stab Polyphemus eye with a huge mast
Odysseus tells Polyphemus that Noman has blinded him
The other Cyclopes are confused and dont know whats going on
Polyphemus lets the sheep out of the cave, and Odysseus and his men escape under the sheep

Hubris Odysseus says that his name is Odysseus, the son of Laertes
Book 10
Island of Aeolus
King of island with 6 daughters and 6 sons
They eat and celebrate all the time
Odysseus and his men stay there for a month to feast

The men open the sack when Odysseus is asleep and they are blown back to the island of Aeolus
Telepylus
Odysseus and his men park their boats both inside the harbor and outside the harbor
The Laestrygonians are monsters and kill some of Odysseus men to bring home and eat
Odysseus is able to escape with the rest of his men on his boat
Aeaean Islands
Odysseus takes charge and goes to see who lives on this island
He sees smoke rising from a house
His men go to the home of Circe; they are offered wine, but are turned into pigs
Odysseus goes to look for his men, and is met by Hermes
Hermes, disguised as a boy, tells Odysseus that to prevent Circes spell from working on him, he
needs to eat the antidote
Previously told by Hermes
Odysseus sets his friends free by following Hermes instructions
They must stay on the island for a year
Circe tells Odysseus of the obstacles that lie ahead (home of Hades)
Elpenor falls off the roof and dies
Odysseus and his men head to the Underworld
Underworld
Odysseus digs a hole and pours in libations and is approached by Elpenors ghost
Teirisias
Tells Odysseus that he has angered Poseidon and will have to make a very difficult trip

Odysseus cannot harm the cattle of Hyperion in order to make it home


Odysseus must take revenge on the suitors when he gets back
Book 12
Back to Circes Island
Odysseus burns Elpenors body and perform funeral rites
Circe gives them food and wine so that they can leave the next day
Circe warns Odysseus about the sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Thrinacian Island, which
has the cattle of Hyperion
