UMAT Preparation Guide

UMAT Exam Preparation
All students who are serious about gaining entry into a health science course in universities around
Australia should understand the importance of the UMAT. The UMAT accounts for at least one third,
often more, of the criteria for entry into health science courses. To gain entry to medicine and dentistry
courses, your UMAT scores would often be weighed against your year 12 academic results (and/or university results if applicable) and the results of the interview. In essence, the UMAT is just as important, if not
MORE important, than your UAI/ENTER/OP results!
Once you have truly appreciated the importance of the UMAT, you should:

Analyse the amount of time you have left.

Decide how much UMAT practice you wish to complete.
Broadly plan how many questions and how much revision you should do on a weekly basis.
Then plan specifically which questions and which sections to revise on a daily or weekly basis.
Week by week, place UMAT practice into available, marked out time slots.
If you have a study system that you have used previously and successfully, apply it to UMAT
practice

Get help early! Many students leave it too late for tutoring to take any effect.

Day Before the UMAT Exam

The UMAT is not the first exam you have ever taken, so most of the following hints and tips may seem to
be common sense. However, many students still fail to stick to these clichd advices:
Get adequate amounts of sleep. Most people would recommend around 8 hours. However, if you
are used to having a lot less or a lot more, stick with your normal routine, provided that you are
normally awake and alert with your unique body clock.
Make sure everything that you need for the next day UMAT identification card, photo ID and
stationary has been prepared and placed together in an easily accessible place.
Make sure you know when and where the UMAT will be held, and organise transport to the exam
venue. If you are going by public transport, find out the correct route, the type of transport and
their respective timetables.
Keep your stress level under control.

On the UMAT Exam Day

The big day has finally arrived. For some of you, it may be notoriously close to your other exams, such as
trial year 12 exams or university exams, but please focus on the UMAT, and the UMAT alone. You should
take note of the following:
Make sure you have breakfast, but dont eat too much, again try to stick with your normal routine.
However, if you normally wouldnt have any breakfast, you should have something this morning,
before you face the two and a half hour exam.
Dont forget to take everything that you have prepared the day before with you when you leave
your home.
Try to leave early and leave plenty of time for travelling to the exam venue. Keep in mind the
morning peak traffic if your session is in the morning.
Go to the bathroom, if you need to, before the exam starts. Unnecessary toilet breaks in the middle of the exam are wasted time.

Taking the UMAT Exam

While taking the UMAT, please remember the following:
All questions are in multiple choice format in section 1: four answer options (A to D); in section
2: four answer options (A to D); and in section 3: five answer options (A to E)
Remember that you can only work in one section at one time, DO NOT attempt to cheat the system and jump between the sections. All your preparations would go to waste if you are caught.
And you WILL BE caught.
Use the reading time wisely, dont just read the material, work out actual answers so you can have
a head start.
Work out your time limit for each questions, move on if the time limit has been exceeded. Come
back for missed questions after you have completed the section.
Remember that multiple choice questions mean that you should NOT leave any answers blank.
Guess if you dont know the answer.

After the Exam

Upon reaching this point you should firstly congratulate yourself for overcoming the first hurdle on your
way to entry into a health profession course. Attempt not to dwell too long on the exam or compare answers with colleagues. This will only create unnecessary uncertainty and tension. You should now focus
on maximising your assessment scores and final mark. Results are released mid-September.
